Looks like we're moving into an unsettled pattern after today and well into FI. Plenty of low pressure out in the Atlantic this week bringing some wet and breezy weather our way for the next 7-10 days. We come under the influence of high pressure then the following mid-week but low pressure doing its best to disrupt that and we fall into the battle ground bringing further rain and not allowing us to tap into the warmer temperatures. Parts of the SE of England might see 19 or 20 degrees if the charts verify but we'll see maybe 12-14. A lot can and will change this far out, but on the positive side there are no significant storms on the horizon so hopefully our luck continues to improve and that high pressure can establish even better to give us a nice warm, settled spell. I won't say Indian Summer just yet...

    HI.

I'm curious as to what the temperatures were in Ireland on 11th October 1969. RTE archives did a silent clip with bad fog in Dublin in the morning and people at the beach in the afternoon. I presume 21c or so max?

I took a look at the rainfall totals for Dunsany, something I haven't looked at in months. As we all know 2023 was an incredibly wet year with months and months of deluges in a row. Last year Dunsany finished with 1048mm of rainfall. We are currently mid way through October and indeed Autumn and with only 2 and a half months of 2024 left to go Dunsany is currently sitting at 554mm of rainfall, roughly half of last years total! No doubt about it 2024 will finish up alot dryer than 2023. Also worth noting Dunsany hasn't had a single month this year that has reached 100mm of rainfall or more. If both November and December 2024 end up delivering at least 100mm of rainfall each, we would still end up under the 800mm for the year.

Yes the ground is incredibly dry here in Meath. Nature has a way of biting back though, so I wouldn't be surprised for it to balance itself out with well above average rainfall for the remainder of 2024.

I'm beginning to sound like Gerry Murphy !

I have been saying that since May. The last 6 months have seen below average rainfall for most stations. Some are well below average. 2024 will be a very dry year in comparison to 2023. Dry is good, dry gives you so many more options.

Athenry got almost 1,600mm of rain in 2023. It's at 900mm so far this year.

I was expecting rain yesterday when golfing but it never arrived. We got a sprinkle only.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

This is it balancing out Sept '22 to Mar '24! 12 out of 19 months were above average here in Cork, many well above.

You guys got way more rainfall than us in the northeast that's for sure. Its been very dry with us in Meath for months now and I think we are bound to get a backlash. It seems to come in extreme cycles now.

The variables of a typical October month. We have gone from next to freezing temps to glorious sunshine with genuine heat in the space of 24 hours.

    I'm not complaining. 17c N Kildare

On this day 7 years ago we had post tropical hurricane opheilia which killed 3 people and left 320,000 people without power, this was the worst storm since hurricane Debbie back in September 1961 killing 11 people definitely a storm to remember.

I’m not surprised tbh, a lot of recent Octobers have generally been on the mild side.
Having said that, this October has had some notable cool days with frost in places.
