No US election has ever made any difference to my life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,033 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

A simple example in the upcoming election. There have been multiple reports that if Trump wins he will reduce the rax rate in US to 15% provided that companies onshore their profits.

This would likely have a massive impact on the multi nationals that currently pay corporate tax here, meaning the massive tax we get could disappear.

    That's quite a tangible one.

Or what about how various presidents in the past have treated irish immigrants? Or the war on terror which ultimately caused more terror. That may not have happened with George Bush?

Or another one - Trump in power and how he and his supporters behave has had a direct impact on how various right wing groups behave in Ireland now. Like they are copying them.

Suggesting that who the leader of the USA doesn't affect Ireland is just wrong.

The anti refugee protests the last 2 years here had nothing to do with Trump.

The only change to our corporation tax rate came during the current administration.

The War on Terror never affected Ireland thankfully, no terror related attacks here.

The undocumented Irish living in America isn't an issue that concerns me. They should have got their status regularised like everybody else.

You've accepted the narrative that the US Election matters to us. The Irish media and Britain's media for that matter which is even worse than ours for US politics coverage, have to tell the audience it matters.

Those of us that maintain an interest in US elections are under no obligation to persuade you to share that interest.

If you don't like the coverage on Newstalk don't listen to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,573 ✭✭✭✭hotmail.com

The problem is that the interest has turned into a distraction.

    Your concern is misplaced.

US elections come around every four years as regular as clockwork.

We can keep up with our own news and follow Trump vs. Harris as well.

US elections get talked about for about 18 months here.

Just had a listen back to Pat's interview with Finnaun Sheahan about recent events in SF.

Pat disgracefully rounded of the segment by comparing IRA kangaroo courts with RTE's appearance at the public accounts sittings.

Unbelievable from a very experienced broadcaster.

Did anyone catch what Kristofferson song Paul Harrington covered? I had some “pressing matters” to attend to and missed the segment, and more besides.

“It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be” - A. Dumbledore

“It is not blood that makes you Irish but a willingness to be part of the Irish nation” - Thomas Davis

Was surprised that didn’t get more of a reaction, P. Thought it was pretty funny, myself. He did say that in relation to ‘the way some people were treated’.

Sheahan wasn’t impressed and clarified a few differences.

I marvel at Kenny's ability to discuss and ask relevant questions about a huge rabge of topics from social policy to technology to international affairs and everything in between. Whether he himself or others do the research is immaterial -the end product is of the standard needed. Pat Kenny is unrivalled as a public/current affairs interviewer.

Oh boo hoo. Poor old Drumpf must be bawling over it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,583 ✭✭✭leath_dub

Pat has a lot of skin in that game. Any time Pat discusses something personal to him he can get nasty. Good friends with Tubs, fellow client of Noel Kelly, diner at the RTE money trough for decades - Pat won't have liked his former colleagues getting a kicking at PAC. The fact that Brian Stanley was the chair gave him he opportunity to put the knife in, which he grasped with both hands

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,725 ✭✭✭✭LambshankRedemption

    He does **** all research.

I am sorry but that is absolute utter sh1te. He researches every topic that comes on. When the topic is a book, he reads the book. It is clear from all of his segments.

I missed the performance myself but im 99% sure Pat said it was going to be Me & Bobby Mcgee

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 117 ✭✭Joe286

I will grant you he reads a lot but pat is a millionaire who then speaks on behalf of the masses. Can you really think of a time he really challenged the establishment? Legal or medical

He is of the ruling class and if you can't see that then you are blind

He’s a radio show host, not an activist. Very unfair to say that he doesn’t challenge “the establishment”.

He consistently gives politicians, from all parties, a “going over”. He’s been, especially, critical of the children’s hospital shambles.

Pat Kenny is FF/FG. Does the guy have consistent themes. Bar hating teachers or the public sector no

He could be an activist radio host.

But instead he acts like a safety valve for the establishment.

Moving on to the next news item

Pat doesn't give a flying **** about child poverty. If you can't see this you are naive

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 117 ✭✭Joe286

Pat on 500k talks to others on 100k.

    Establishment to establishment

God forbid he'd ever talk to a social worker or single parent

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,968 ✭✭✭✭EmmetSpiceland

Do you listen to the show, Joe? He has social workers on and he covers all the social issues facing the people of the country.

you seem very upset and obsessed that Pat Kenny earns big money! Of course he does! But much less than he earned at RTE though….he is freelance not on a permanent contract and he is worth the money, particularly to Newstalk as he is the best in the business . Where is the link to say he earns 500K please?

As many others said here, PK is very well researched and if you bothered to listen to any of his daily shows instead of showing begrudgery and bitterness because he is well off, you would see that. Before any interviews with authors he reads the books himself. He doesn't get an assistant or researcher to do it!

He has a degree in chemical engineering and worked in that area in the UK before becoming a broadcaster. Last week he was interviewing Maria O Dwyer, Infrastructure Delivery Director with Irish Water about taking water from the Shannon to service Dublin and he knew everything there was to know about the engineering side of things…… a hundred times more than the likes of Claire Byrne would have known.

Don't let your bitterness at his big salary and his house in Dalkey blind you. He is an independant broadcaster and regularly takes on CEO's and politicians….. far more so than RTE! He has questioned our stance on immigration a lot lately too, and our lack of a plan, likewise the Children's hospital and OPW overspending.

It's been disappointing to see our main media (RTE) in trouble and their main and only radio competitor not properly holding them to account. Pat Kenny has been woeful on the RTE scandal from the start - presumably because he was living on the gravy train there for years and years. Ridiculous salary and long summers off.

You miss my point entirely. Pat has no concept of what's it like to live in avg money. He doesn't talk to anyone on avg money. He is pure establishment. Doesn't want any real change

Makes no real effort to talk to real people just other establishment heads

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 711 ✭✭✭QueensGael

TBF, he grew up in pretty modest circumstances, he wasn't born into the landed gentry or anything. He got a scholarship to secondary school at O'Connell's, which was probably one of the luckier breaks in his life. His success is a combination of an incredible work ethic and taking opportunities. The man is working well beyond retirement age and is on top of his game, and is well able to interview a huge range of guests. I don't see how living on €30k would make him better at his job.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,573 ✭✭✭✭hotmail.com

I'm not sure he would be any great loss if he did retire now.
