Do I need to have an account to use the chargers at Barrack Obamas?

Time is contagious, everybody is getting old.

how much did it cost to fill up your 1.6 and how much range will you actually get?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 382 ✭✭Gerrymandering reborn

It cost me around €93. Yes I will get around 680-700km taking into account the current cold weather

Wow that's actually mad money. Why is public charging so expensive? Is it some sort of special electricity like the way you can get premium fuels?

Ballpark same price with ICE and an average enough EV in this particular scenario. Wild variations in running an EV but this is the priciest.

I have probably underestimated my EV charging costs a little in my post above if the 700kms is carried out on motorways at speed limit. I used my average figure rather than motorway figure

Long term average for my EV is 17.3/100 which equals €69.03 using a 57c per unit public charger. At home it would cost me €7.26. When anyone asks I always tell them if you can't charge at home don't buy an EV.

.46c per kwh at Tesla chargers. Long term average on my car is 14.9 kwh per 100km. 48 euro for 700km if all public charging.

10.43 euro if charged at home or 34 euro if charged at home for the first 300km then public after that.

Yeah but don't forget. Most of your charging will be at home on night rate electricity , the issue really is not cost but the time to charge and the availability of high power charger over 100 kw.

I would recommend either getting a cheap EV with 40-50 Kwh and taking the ICE for the longer trips and forgetting about charging because it is one major pain in the ass after the novelty wears off. If you don't have ICE at home then I wouldn't recommend EV at this time.

Charging at public chargers gets old fast, believe me, I did it for 10 years and I'm now back in a petrol manual car.

22 kWh/100km would be an absurd figure to use on a small normal EV. I got less than that on a 762bhp Model S Performance.

A model 3 or BYD seal will do 14/15 kWh/100km. More realistic figure to use. Tesla chargers are about 46c/kwh.

    700km needs about 105 kWh.
    €48.

Or about €15 at home charging.

OP, Mad Lad did his public charging when they were free and if they weren't broken, then they were hogged by locals/taxis. Different days back then.

I gotta second this, the charging network has come on leaps and bounds in the past few years

It's still got a ways to go, but it's a completely different experience to 5 years ago. As I've said before the biggest issue I find is finding chargers because there's no decent signage

I didn't even plan my charging stops the last couple of times we took a long trip, I knew there were a couple of hubs within range and I ended up using a Circle K hub which I found on the way down

And he also had a mega commute, a commute that far exceeded his EV range. Something every EV driver will tell you not to do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,398 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

You need to get your facts correct and stop spreading misinformation. I was fully EV until May 2024. So , reality is that the charge times are still woeful for the range vs ICE and the 150 + Kw charging network is still ****, until there's an ICE level of infrastructure and charge time EV will be a limitation for longer trips, I did all the stopping and all that bullcrap for too long and just ended up taking the Diesel for the majority of long trips.

If people want to make it work and spend endless hrs at chargers then good for them, I couldn't count the lost hrs I'll never get back.

I was very dedicated to the cause back then but this was 2015, you and Josip seem to think I drove EV for a year ! I only ditched EV May 2024 !

The network was **** and still is **** because a lot more people now have EV, the charge times are **** and the range is still well off ICE. These are facts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,398 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

It has come on yeah but at a snails pace because of the numbers of EV on the road now vs 2015, the charge times and range are still big issues for most people.

Why were you spending hours at chargers? Never once had to queue.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 42,226 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

I’m well aware you were dedicated, I’m driving EV’s since 2012, on cars that had no fast charging!

But you knew back then that your commute was longer than yours car’s range. You put up with it.

It most definitely is not something that would be recommended to any new EV owner nowadays. Never mind back then.

THe vast majority of drivers in Ireland could easily cope with an EV, and do their commute and back without charging. Remember that the average commute in this country is something like 30km. Maybe less.

Plus, so many EVs now have big batteries, that they easily do a much larger commute.

Everyone should have home charging if they can accommodate it. I would still advise people not to rely on public charging for your daily use. Long trips yes, daily use, no. Can't install a home charger? Don't buy an ev then.

I have a hybrid and a full ev, and haven't used a public charger since the day they started charging for them in the North. Now it's all done at home and at work. And I think most people would have no need for public charging in their daily lives if they have a charger at home.

Your comments are irrelevant because back then I was fully aware about what I was getting in to, today however, the changes haven't come fast enough, the cars still charge relatively slow and the infrastructure is pretty **** because there are a lot more cars around now.

You keep referring to the past which is irrelevant to today so I don't know why you bring it up, it's as if you're trying to believe I only ever drove a 24 Kwh Nissan Leaf and have no clue about anything after this.

Are you joking, if the vast majority of drivers changed to EV today the public charging network would die on it's ass. Most people want the convenience of a petrol or diesel with the same range, it's not about what you think they could do with it's what they want that matters and that is range, charge times especially, depreciation and cost to buy.

The majority of people who are not into EV tech simply don't give a **** to want to spend so much time at public chargers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,398 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

Well I'm delighted for you. Hrs as in total time, not in one go. You don't get out much then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,033 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

That's exactly the point many posters are making. I know you're being your usual unapproachable hostile self, but yes many people don't get out much and, like myself do 99% of their charging at home. My work commute is tiny(luckily) I could actually walk it but because it's oddball hours I prefer to drive. In the 15 months of ownership of an EV I've DC charged it 4 times, one of those times was a practice run to familiarise myself with the procedure, I've never publicly AC charged it. In conclusion I'm the ideal candidate for an EV with the added bonus that all my charging can fit inside the BG 2-5 (5.97c) charging window.

    Bitchy😁

21% of my charging is on public chargers. Must be lucky then🤷

I disagree, I haven't had to queue for a charger for several years now

Part of that is down to having an EV with more range, part of that is down to more hubs being available

I think there's been a big acceleration in the past year in particular with Ecars and Circle K both rolling out hubs at various sites, plus Ionity upgrading their sites

As I've said, the biggest problem is finding the hubs. The in car navigation is a gamble as to whether it's up to date, and you can't be messing around with your phone while driving (although plenty still do)

That's why I keep banging on about having signs on the road pointing out nearby chargers. Not every solution needs to be high tech

Your out of date opinion is irrelevant. You made the wrong choice it seems and you’re trying to portray that onto others.

I refer to the past as your experience is in the past and your trying to give guidance based on your past, out of date experience.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 42,226 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

The majority of people just want a car. The fuel choice is based on personal needs.

You sound very scorned by your past experiences but you made the wrong choice. No other way to sugar coat it.

And the laughable thing about it was in every thread where someone was looking for a car all he ever contributed was, buy an EV, buy an EV, be like me and buy an EV, I'm brilliant in my EV 😏, now he hates them…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,119 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

Thing about EVs is they change month on month, quarter on quarter, year on year. If I stopped in 2018 or 2022 for example, my experience would be severely outdated and irrelevant.

That's not addressing what I said.

I said the vast majority of drivers in Ireland would be able to live with an ev for their daily lives, as long as they had home charging. That's not my stats, that's the stat of the average daily commute in Ireland which is announced most years. I heard it earlier this year and it's something very surprising, high 20s or very low 30s km. So most people in Ireland could easily do their commute, plus return home, plus whatever running to gaa training, shops etc they do that day, in a modern ev. There is zero need for the majority to be queueing for public chargers, IF they have a home charger.
