I heard they are. They are putting cattle into sheds for the come up to and after Christmas from what I heard. Some shitshow if it's right

Yes and no do not be a small supplier with out QA. Maybe in the midlands with 5-6 processors within 50-60 miles you might get away with it but not if it a couple of ABP and Dawn next to you. While Kgs matter there is a nice twist if you buy the light store that will kill 300 kgs in 12-14 months

Value In 12 month cattle, if the heavy lifting is done you are buying cattle that can be finished intensively in 100-120 days you are competing with feedlots who are getting 30c/kg more than you and buying feed straight from.the port @ 100/ ton less than you.

When buying you look for value. But short term cattle are now a different proposition. You will still buy around the edges especially if you have grass ( a scarce commodity this year) abd hope to grass them for 6-8 weeks. Friesian heifers 450kgs+ over 30 months can be picked up for 1.6-1.8/ kg. Anything with JEX or FRX with a bit of age and weight is handy enough to buy

While it never pays to breed a bad one it often is where the money is when buying. If you want to put in cattle you want to hang after Christmas Cost is gone crazy. But then when you complain about.art prices it usually you cost base is wrong. It nay be completely outside you control adapting you system is where the money is

was watching the bulls in carrigallen today. Start of the sale I didn’t think the prices were as good as a few months ago. But it took up after the first 50 and was some huge prices for good bulls.

Do ye think the ploughing will have an impact on prices this week? Thinking of taking some bullock to my local mart [Castleisland] on Wed, but a bit apprehensive due to the ploughing being on the same day, demand might not be as high?

It depends on the type of cattle. If they're heavier forward stores likely to be bought by a feedlot then I'd work away. If lighter types that would be bought by a farmer then I'd hold off. I think Listowel is on next week so you might have to hold them for 2 weeks.

Cheers. Think I'll hold tough. Animals aren't overly heavy by my reckoning, probably around the 470kg mark. A few more weeks will see them put on a bit more weight. Hopefully weather (and prices) hold

Nothing wrong with them type of cattle at that money. It's often easier to get a 4-600 euro bullock into 1250 to 1600 euro than a 1k bullock into 2k.

You have less money tied up in stock, admittedlythey will be with you for 10-14 months

THey opened the bidding at 5k and only 3 bidders. How could you make money buying at that money?

What's dirt cattle.... poorly bred or Under fed or both.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,718 ✭✭✭Anto_Meath

Yes I thought the prices were back on other years when you look at what beef cattle are making. But there were nice good quality beef heifers but they might not wonderful for breeding.. BB aren't exactly the preferred suckler cow.

Under feed "badly done" cattle are a great buy if you can get them. Poorly bred cattle (as in jex breeding) are not good for much good, to narrow, small frame and wouldn't carry weight.

Thats the mistake many make Anto. You will.often buy those JEX 350-370 kgs for 500-550 euro.

Too many carry them too long. Get them to 570 kgs they will hang approx 270kgs@4.8/kg they will make 1300 euro. Admittedly they will need ration for 10 weeks and that is the mistake lads make feed them for 8-10 weeks it's costs about 50-60 euro.

I have killed a good few FRX over the years @ 300kgs ish DW you will often buy that type of bullock for sub or about 600 euro. At 300 kgs under 30 months they can hit 1500 euro if you can get the FS on them sub 30 months.

what are 18month Friesans going per kg, roughly 475kg

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,217 ✭✭✭dominatinMC

I sold a bunch of them two weeks ago, roughly same weight, and got €2.1/kg which I thought was fair enough.

thank you. Elderly neighbour has a few for selling and was asking me what they’d be worth.
the likes of them are probably not the worst buy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 185 ✭✭nearlybreak

if they are good straight ones 2.25 a kg even a bit more trade has really lifted for them the shippers are buying them now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,539 ✭✭✭limo_100

What kind of money are angus and Hereford weanlings making a kg bulls and heifers? 250-320kg?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,217 ✭✭✭dominatinMC

From what I've seen, anything from 2.5/kg to 3/kg.

It’s amazing how some lads don’t know how to use a calculator, giving heifers away to a factory at 4.05 base when everyone else was getting at least 5.05. They would have made a lot more in the mart, some lads are clueless when it comes to selling cattle. I cannot understand the fascination some lads have with giving cattle away to factories. The factories are making serious bob out of some lads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,254 ✭✭✭TinyMuffin

they thing they’re going to be codded in the mart and everyone will see.
I’ve told lads I draw for, you can bring them home from the mart and go to the factory. You can’t the other way around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,008 ✭✭✭leoch

I think u have to keep them so many days if u take them home from mart and go to factory

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,539 ✭✭✭limo_100

That's what I was seeing as well hard to justify paying that for them tbh when plainer type ch and lim heifers can be picked up for 3-3.20 a kg from what I have seen

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 355 ✭✭grass10

No requirement to keep them for a number of days before going to the factory
