Making a balancing payment and preliminary tax payment on ROS

Hi folks. This is the first year I've received a balancing amount for the previous tax year (2023), meaning I underpaid, so I want to ensure I pay it correctly. Could someone confirm that this is the correct process?

    Statement of Net Liabilities says:

Income Tax Balancing Amount 2023: €1234.00 owed

Income Tax Preliminary Tax 2024: €2345.00 owed

On ROS I go to Submit a Payment → Tax Payment/Declaration → Income Tax

    I select Income Tax period 01/01/2023 - 31/12/2023 and pay the €1234.00
Then select Preliminary Tax 01/01/2024 - 31/12/2024 and pay €2345.00

This is probably really obvious, but I always overthink things when it comes to ROS, and I almost paid the total of both as one payment in the Preliminary Tax section this morning without thinking!

    Thanks,

Have you filed the 2023 return? If you have then you have the correct process.

If 2023 is not filed, you should have the option to make an instruction for both when filing your Form 11 if you wish to make it a bit more straight forward, iirc i think it goes something like

    IT 2023 - x
    PT 2024 - 2x
    Total - 3x

You'll then get a confirmation slip of the x and 2x

If you just want to top up the 2023 balance so you have nothing due when it is filed at a later date, you can do as you have suggested in your post. The Preliminary Tax for 2024 isn't due until the return is filed

Thanks very much. I filed the 2023 return earlier this year.
