you silly claim that “we were here first”.
Who is “we” and when did “we” arrive?

Are we seriously at a point where we are trying to somehow actively downplay what happened to the Jews during WW2?

Because that's a fairly low level to sink to, whatever your motive. No-one has ever claimed the Jews were the "only" victims of the Nazi regime, which obviously targeted and killed all kinds of people.

But the Jews were the single biggest group they actively selected for complete extermination and the group they by far spent the most resources on, even prioritizing their murder over some military considerations towards the end of the war.

I've seen some weird stuff on this thread driven by bias against Israel, like praise of Hezbollah and Iran, but attempting to downplay the gravity of the Holocaust is just off a cliff edge completely.

Hate modern-day Israel all you want, but don't to downplay history like that.

Some good examples of how major media outlets have played a part in this disaster.

Well if their members had any sense they would not be involved in any terror attacks. It’s a legitimate reason to not fund them, the direct involvement points towards a large indirect involvement which has been claimed for years, that they were diverting aid and funds to Hamas.

Ireland, in their bias against Israel, is not example subtle

Is it bias to condemn the mass killings of civilians, the press, front line workers, threatening our own?

Guess I'm biased so, I don't think that makes me the weird one though.

let me ask a hypothetical question. If you could choose to live in a land governed by Israelis or Hamas (or any Islamic regime) which would you honestly choose? And to make it even easier for you, let’s assume you are not gay, a women or someone of a different religion. and let’s assume the land will be economically similar no matter who rules it.

You might want to inform them and the Palestinians.

    a land governed by Israelis

    You mean occupation?

I certainly wouldn't fancy living anywhere near the Israeli Regime at the moment, high chance of being murdered.

Another 22 killed today, there will be no candles, pictures or names published on any western media.

Can we assume we are are Palestinian living under oppression and occupation?

It's a non-sequitur anyway. If I had to choose, I might chose to live in Brazil rather than Argentina. That doesn't mean I'd think Brazil should be allowed to carpet bomb Argentinian citizens

I think, personally, you're using the wrong conditional here — and you should be asking what anyone else 'would' have done in their shoes, not 'should', if you are trying to pose a hypothetical.

There's an important distinction between the two. Clearly, if an armed terrorist organisation attacked your country with the viciousness and barbarity displayed by Hamas, you would feel a strong urge for vengeance and that urge might cloud your morality. That's natural. But that's not to say that seeking vengeance with a clouded sense of morality is what you should do.

History is littered with the terrible stories of people who did things that any of us might do, or would do, if put in those people's circumstances. The question of what they should have done is a very different one.

So if you're asking, what should Israel have done, I find it fairly straightforward in my own mind to say (to put it mildly) they should not have done what they did to Gaza and its people and should not be doing what they are doing now. It all reeks of the USA's quest for vengeance after 9/11 which achieved nothing of lasting value and if anything made things far worse.

How many were proven to be part of Hamas?

Also, weren't the Israeli government the ones giving suitcases full of cash to Hamas?

Here we go again, about time they came up with some new ideas.

"if you get on the wrong train, get off at the nearest station, the longer it takes you to get off, the more expensive the return trip will be."

Who do they think they are fooling at this stage.

Several walls missing from the house and not one bit of damage to the "gear" they "found" there.

It was clearly placed after they blew up and murdered whoever lived there.

Some people have absolutely no idea about the Palestinian situation before October last year. Just like many others who had no idea where the Ukraine was before Russia invaded it. All of a sudden they were adding little blue and yellow flags to their avatars and yapping daily on their social media accounts.

Anyone who's been aware of what's been happening in Palestine over the last few decades can understand why the events on October 7th kicked off and why it didn't happen in a vacuum.

Given the US election coming up Israel can only do something that wont affect "prices at the pump" in the US , the Houthis or the Iranian leadership better have wills up to date and the lack of a response from Israel so far feels like something is brewing.

22, you know there were car bombs that killed hundreds and they were barely mentioned in the news. I’m not sure what you expect. There’s also a pretty grim war in Sudan that has ethnic cleansing happening now too. Not many marches for that, not the cool cause right now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,549 ✭✭✭Potatoeman

The ones booted out. It’s a far bigger deal if the UN are funding Hamas.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,067 ✭✭✭✭Danzy

Hamas linked group doing that genocide, a real genocide . Not like this war which will still be one of the smallest in the region in decades

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,327 ✭✭✭✭Donald Trump

Have you been posting about such incidents on the thread you started to raise awareness of them?

There are also UN peacekeepers monitoring in Sudan. And Russian mercenaries there too. I wonder what would happen if the latter ordered the UN to abandon their posts and then attacked them when they didn't……would be alright, yeah? Given they told them to leave first

Genocide isn't really considered "cool" btw

But were they proven to be working with Hamas? If I remember correctly, Israel accused some people, The UN kicked them out but Israel never followed up with any actual evidence.

And no, Israel funding Hamas should be a bigger deal.

The stupidity of this comment is infuriating.

Just because zionism is linked to Jews doesn't mean that all jews are zionists, or that all zionists are jews.

Go off and learn basic logic, or maybe look up Venn Diagrams please

Some certainly were - one was a top Hamas man in Lebanon. But it's ok, Philippe Lazzarini didn't know about it, so it's not his fault at all. So just keep giving your money to UNRWA and nobody will ever know how much of it goes to Hamas.

    What's to worry about?

UNRWA chief denies knowing that suspended employee was Hamas leader in Lebanon

Also, why do you think they were letting Hamas bring money into Gaza? Because they were hoping for them to attack Israelis? Or because they (wrongly) thought they could buy peace with Hamas in Gaza?

    This thread isn't about Sudan.

Have you started a thread about it?

I have a friend who visited Israel in 2023 (a lifelong ambition of his) and he said he absolutely hated the place - said there was a really bad oppressive vibe and any interaction with immigration or the authorities was hostile and extremely rude….the locals were pretty much the same. He couldn't wait to get out of the country and was genuinely surprised at how unpleasant an experience it was.

That is an extremely disingenuous post as it omits any actual figures.

My parents are Jehovah's Witnesses and regularly bring up their victimisation by the Nazis. They have whole documentaries and pamphlets about it. They wear it as a 'we've been persecuted' badge of honour.

Do you know how many Jehovahs Witnesses were actually killed by the Nazis? Approximately 1,500.

Compared to that, there were 6,000,000 Jews killed.

So for every 1 Jehovah's Witness killed, there were 4,000 Jews killed.

I think one group might have a bit of a bigger legitimate grievance, don't you think?

Edit - just to note as I don't want people taking me the wrong way, this isn't the 'victim Olympics'. Anyone who was persecuted by the Nazi regime deserves to have people listen to their story.

However, to make comments such as 'Israel is living off it’s victimhood in WWII' by creating a list of other people persecuted, but completely omitting the absolute scale of murder against the Jews in particular is at best ignorance and at worst holocaust denial.

Genocide is probably a strong word considering the population of Gaza has increased by an average of about 10,000 per year since 1950, 22,000 in the last year. There's been about 130,000 total Arab deaths since 1948. I'd argue calling that a genocide suggests that Israel are incompetent at genocide

A better example of genocide is the Iran/Iraq war which killed 500,000 or the more recent 2015 Saudi led invasion of Yemmen which killed 355k but let's not talk about that because it might piss off the oil producers, am I right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,421 ✭✭✭Wolf359f

Ah the aul makie up definition of genocide. I've asked people repeatedly on here when people use population growth as a defense of genocide, but here goes again, what's your definition of genocide?

Do you also believe that the Hamas attack on Oct 7 was not an act of genocide, ya know cause the population of Israel increased YOY.

My theory is they want to kill non Palestinians in gaza so there,ll be no witness,s to their psyhopathic genocide of civilians

Hitler committed genocide against the Jews but at least he did not try to destroy all the buildings and bomb cemetery s and churches in Germany

the IDF kill medical workers civilian political protestors including American citizens

I thought genocide was just part of history like world war 2 we have moved on

We are more civilised than that

The Nazis vs the Idf israeli government

    should be opposites

Not united in committed genocide against a group based on race

The IDF bombs schools mosques graveyards

There's literally no safe space in gaza

They have reduced 70 per cent of buildings in gaza to rubble

I was naive I thought after 2000 there was no genocide like there's no longer war in the north

Eg the ira does not plant bombs or shoot people

Look at Florida mega storms floods it may end only the rich will stay in Florida

It,ll cost billions to fix the damage caused by the last 2 floods and there will be floods every year probably with the cabability to cause massive damage to buildings

Ordinary people cannot afford to pay rising insurance costs

North Korea is sending troops to fight in the Ukraine

Its hard to be optimistic about the future of earth

Will be wiped out by war and climate change or both
