It's weird here in Germany. I've deliberately avoided talking to most people about it. However i did talk to two german coworkers and they were pissed off about the german governments response. They feel that whats happening is wrong but the government has to support israel because of the nazis.

but the government has to support israel because of the nazis.

You mean the modern day ones in charge in Israel at the minute?

German lad in cork was saying how being gay in Ireland is tolerated and you feel safe but he would often get disapproving glances when holding his partner's hand, that in his home town in Germany no one registers it on the main street. You'd stay out of certain rough neighbourhoods but that's it.

They are not a society that are going to be sympathetic to some of the most violently regressive societies and organizations on earth. The holocaust is more often used as an excuse to not pay the bill, for things like defense, to drive down wages than any practical policy day to day.

It’s very easy to see who controls the narrative and has the power by reference to what happens when you criticise them. The tentacles stretch across Europe and the US given that valid criticism is being suppressed on both sides of the Atlantic. This is not because the criticism is wrong but because Israeli sympathisers/influencers penetrate deep into the corridors of power.

Kind of like the chicken and egg question; is this influence necessary because of anti-semetism or did anti-semetism rise because of this nefariousinfluence?

The actions of the Israelis are the most likely cause of another Hitler rise to power. It’s like they are testing fate with their heinous actions.

And what of the actions of Hamas last October? Killing and taking hostage of a number of Israelis, knowing full well what the retaliation would be… Had that not happened, Iran and Hezbollah wouldn't be getting involved now

I think without any of the 5 major nuclear countries involved (and if they did it would likely all be in support of Israel) this is unlikely to descend into a world war

The Germans can't open their mouth about anything otherwise they get the holocaust rubbed in their faces. That's the simple politics of it all and they are well aware of it.

Constant Israeli aggresion was sadly inevitably going to lead to an October 7th response. If it wasn't then, it was always on the cards with continued aggression. I'm not justifying it but history has shown that if you treat a population the way the Palestinians have been treated for almost a century, things will inevitably escalate to outright catastrophe.

Israel’s security cabinet will vote Thursday on its response to Iran’s ballistic missile attack, an Israeli official told CNN. Earlier, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said the retaliation would be “powerful, precise, and above all – surprising.”

meanwhile other  Gulf states are lobbying Washington to stop Israel from attacking Iran's oil sites because they are concerned their own oil facilities could come under fire from Tehran's proxies if the conflict escalates, three Gulf sources told Reuters.

The aggression started after the October 7th attack though. Hamas instigated the attack, not ordinary Palestine citizens. I think it's important to make that distinction

It's 'how they control the media', you see. (Literally had someone drop that clanger in the office the other day)

Yes, Germany can't have much meaningful input on this.

The country who should have (or has) the responsibility of leading the way in getting tough on Israel should be a country which has:

    • public support domestically for tougher action on Israel, and
    • have some amount of sway with the US, and be on-side with them already.

Ideally, they would also be part of one or more powerful international orgs already, to be able to get other member countries on-board with this action also.

Countries meeting both of those criteria are surely uniquely responsible to take action, because other countries can't, if they don't meet one of them.

The just published UN report and Israel's attacks on UNIFIL have undoubtedly added yet more pages to the ICC and ICJ evidence folders.

I'd imagine the ICC judges are going to find it really difficult to come up with a reason to not sign warrants for the arrest of Netanyahu and Gallant.

    RTE
UN probe accuses Israel of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza

"Israel is deliberately targeting health facilities and killing and torturing medical personnel in Gaza, UN investigators have said, accusing the country of "crimes against humanity".

"Israel has perpetrated a concerted policy to destroy Gaza's healthcare system as part of a broader assault on Gaza," the United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry said in a statement."

The level of absolute genocidal savagery that the Israelis are currently engaging in started on October 7th.

But they were frequently kidnapping and murdering Palestinian civilians long before October 7th, in addition to stealing their land, bulldozing their homes, and oppressing them in just about every way imaginable.

Hamas was born out of this and was originally founded by ordinary Palestinians who had seen their friends and family butchered, so while they don't represent all Palestinians obviously they're also not some alien entity that exists in a vacuum.

    Israeli aggression? You sure?

It's interesting how nobody in Germany seems to get labelled as Islamophobic for their strong support for Israel and for the bombing of Gaza and Lebanon. But anyone who goes against the pro-Israel narrative is immediately depicted as a troublemaker, an anti-Semite and a terrorist sympathiser.

It is truly flabbergasting how little the Israeli's care about how they are seen in the wider world. You can add Italy to the countries that they have pi55ed of after taking pot shots at their UN peace keepers.

Even the Americans, who they would truly be screwed without, are treated with total disregard. Netanyahu undermining Biden at every opportunity even as Biden offers minimal push back against anything and gives nothing but support. If they were a couple then it'd be one of those toxic co-dependent relationships.

It kinda reminds me of when South Park had Saddam Hussein and Satan being in a toxic relationship with the bigger stronger partner being utterly unable to standup up to the smaller psychotic partner.

Let’s just say all that happens, then Hamas start launching rockets at Israel again. It’s right back to where they are again.

“Regarding these 10 cases, he said that appropriate measures will be taken in due course, in conformity with UNRWA Regulations and Rules.

With respect to the remaining nine cases, the evidence obtained by OIOS indicated that the UNRWA staff members may have been involved in the 7 October attacks.

UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini issued a statement acknowledging the completion of the probe.

“I have decided that in the case of these remaining nine staff members, they cannot work for UNRWA. All contracts of these staff members will be terminated in the interest of the Agency,” he said.”

You cannot possibly believe that this all begins on October 7th 2023 and that it was all sunshine and rainbows before then? Like I said, this has been escalation over generations, for almost a century. Eventually, at some point, all human decency breaks down and all hell breaks loose. It doesn't just happen out of nowhere.

Sure, what you suggest is illegal per the definitions I provided.

But do do feel free to carry on condoning war crimes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,894 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

Of course not, there have been multiple similar events in the past, but they all start with aggression against Israel do they not?

The only democratic state in the Middle East with the most moral army in the world that goes further, than any army that ever existed, to avoid harming non combatants (excluding sheep)

Along with Italy (called it a war crime), add France:
"France has also raised concerns over Israeli forces firing on the UN positions and has called on Israel to explain why shots were fired at the troops.

In a statement the French government added that the protection of UN troops is an obligation for everyone."

It bears repeating that in a country where UN troops are keeping the peace between Israelis and Hezbollah, that it is the Israeli's who are the ones who fired on the peacekeepers.

Many might take a cynical view of when Hezbollah told their fighters last week not to fire on the peacekeepers, but there's not many ways to look at Israel actually opening fire on them. Unprovoked.

Meanwhile Scholtz has just announced to it's parliament they are supplying arms and will continue to do so.

    Niccolò Machiavelli :

"To ally with great powers to defeat your neighbour is a strategic trap; if you win, you become the slave of the greater power; if the allied power is defeated, you remain alone and defenceless against the angry neighbour, and you are destroyed." - Niccolò Machiavelli
