I have been critical of publicans on this thread in the past.

I still resent the way they opportunistically lobbied to increase the price to us home drinkers with MUP.

However I think it's a bit harsh to call that individual a gouger.

I've been in that pub and it's a well run house.

They serve excellent food at reasonable prices and the pints etc. are not expensive either.

(I'm not a local and have no connection to the business)

MUP is going through the roof in Scotland. How long before our mob have a look and think that's a great idea.

It won't be long. Govt. will put the price of a pint up in the budget and that will lead to the Publicans/AAI wanting them to follow suit with Off Sales.

Leave them at it. NI is the only place to get a decent bargain these days. Just fill your boots when there.

Problem is that the imported UK stuff is generally inferior (IMO). Take Carlsberg for example (my poison of choice), 500ml cans here 4.3%, cans in Newry are 440ml 3.4% and taste a hell of a lot worse.

YYes I noticed that myself the carlsberg in uk and Northern Ireland is way inferior to carlsberg here, in fairness to diageo they do a good job brewing carlsberg here, it's an awful pity we can't get it in Northern Ireland

I wonder will any political party or independent candidate election manifesto contain the removal of MUP. They'd get my vote if they did

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,046 ✭✭✭techman1

I think the MUP price is up for review next year, a crowd of unelected bureacrats will put the price up behind closed doors, it will just be a fait au complis with no debate. Maybe need to start canvassing politicians about ending all this nanny state intervention stuff

Aye, important to flag on the doorstep opposition to the scheme as it is… they might feed into reluctance to increase it.

I can't see any politician advocating their support for a reduction in or removal of MUP.
Too easily argued by others that it is seen as supporting binge/unhealthy drinking

At the rate this country is going we'll all be very healthy/miserable. No tobacco (unless it falls off a passing jet or is 'acquired' from a 'trader') No fast food (costs too much now anyway) and no booze. We'll be saving all our drinking and partying for the two weeks in "Someplace Sunny" and living like monks the rest of the year. Given that many of us have to be up very early to get the kids to school and get to work, we may as well go to Matins and Vespers after picking up the kids from school.

In Portugal at the moment, beers for just over a Euro, bottles of table wine starting at 2.50 or €7-8 for outstanding Douros. Bottles of spirits €12-20. Ireland has become a complete nanny state with the drinks industry calling the shots under the guise of Public Health

Booked Rosslare-Cherbourg 3 day trip for later on this month. We will Stock up on wine and some beer, only purpose (plus a mini break awsu). Will keep us in wine for the year, in fairness we only drink 1 or 2 bottles a week. But most go towards xmas and birthday gifts & BBQ invites for family, friends & neighbours.

    Note to politicians.

You are either running or aspiring to run a country where people like to enjoy a drink.

Please stop trying to use price to prevent us from having a drink in our own home.

Can someone explain this to me:

Just been in my local Tesco. "Reduced to Clear" but how are they legally able to sell 8 cans of Mould for €6?

MUP for that 8 pack is €9.73.

    They are breaking the law.

Scotland has increased MUP by 30%

The evaluation showed an average 13.6% reduction in alcohol related deaths compared to England since it's introduction in 2018.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,150 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

Did they compare it to the stats on drug deaths?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 922 ✭✭✭65535

Alcohol is a drug - but hey if you want - YOU CAN BREW YOUR OWN !

Of course they didn't, and ill bet you all the money in my pockets that when our renewal is up they will point to a reduction for the past 3 years while ignoring the same levels of reduction that were happening year over year for the 15 years prior to MUP.

    Already thinking about the Christmas.

SIXTY EIGHT euros for a slab of Nitrosurge between all the taxes, nanny tax and the cost of bringing back my own recycling for one slab. That's the cheapest anywhere by the way. Going to be an utterly mean Christmas. Wasn't long ago LIDL were doing 24x500ml Guinness drafts for €20.

Nitrosurge is a complete rip-off in any case.

6 for €12 (+deposit) should be back in Aldi and Lidl soon.

Most I know who use them think they are far superior to normal draught cans. It's the nearest to a pint you will get at home without a tap. That's a good deal.

Each to their own I suppose.

I mean yeah it's a rip off at €70 for a slab no doubt but if you're a Guinness drinker it's the bees knees, regular draft cans are absolutely dirt in comparison.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 39,857 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

Pay a lot more for the same drink that looks slightly nicer, nah I'll pass.

Now what's really a rip-off is €3 for a can of Guinness Original in Dunnes - same liquid as draught cans and nitrosurge, no widget in can, no nitrogen needed just CO2 - it should be cheaper than draught cans not dearer. They can counter that with "well few people buy it" but what do they expect at that price.

West Indies Porter is much better value!

    Tastes a lot nicer too.

As I say though we all have different tastes.

I disagree, the "drinking problems" are myths from the government.

My local GAA club was hosting their Christmas draw recently. Free pints galore for regulars, I didn’t avail as I drove down.

Why is it ok for the GAA bar but not OK for the local shop?

Ironically, one of the people overseeing the draw was a Garda who’s a high up member in the local club.

They could have just banned below cost selling of alcohol

Or they could’ve just left the free market alone.
