Round 4 TV picks (all URC TV, other broadcasters below)

    Friday
7:35pm Scarlets v Connacht TG4 BBC Two Wales Prem 1

    7:35pm Cardiff v Glasgow Prem 2

    Saturday

12:45pm Lions v Edinburgh (tape delay, Sun 6am, Prem 1)

    3pm Bulls v Ulster (tape delay, 3am, Prem 1)

    5:15pm Treviso v Leinster RTE2 Prem 1

    5:15pm Dragons v Sharks S4C Prem 2

    7:35pm Munster v Ospreys RTE2 S4C Prem 1

7:35pm Zebre v Stormers (tape delay, Sun 1pm, Prem 2).

Bad news for Ulster fans in the Republic, their game is on URC TV only, or you can wait for a tape delay showing at 3am on Premier 1. Fans in the UK can see that game on the UK version of Premier 1 but it will be preempted in Ireland for football.

Or you know, you could turn on Prem 2 on Saturday and see if it magically appears. That’s known to happen with Premier! In all seriousness this is hopefully the sort of thing the new rugby channel should avoid.

The other three provinces get free to air coverage, with RTE and Premier doing a double bill of Leinster and Munsters games on Saturday. Connacht is on TG4.

Any idea who's on the Premier commentary panel? Would rather avoid Cahill on RTE

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,832 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

For Irish games it's usually Ryle Nugent………

However both Leinster and Munster play on Saturday, so each commentator can only be doing one of the matches. You might get lucky!

Ah I've no issue with Ryle. At least he shows enthusiasm.

Generally not too picky but I can't stand Hugh Cahill

Was there a promise from them to show all games or all games live? I get the feeling it was live….

Oh there was definitely a promise alright. And here we are, year four of a four year deal, and they still can’t quite pull it off.

In the UK, they’ve the Premier Player for stuff they can’t put on the linear channel, and while there’s good reasons they can’t offer that here, it’s a pity they’ve no alternative means of delivering this content they have but can’t deliver.

And they are an Irish company to boot.

To be fair to them, I find URC TV to be an excellent service and very reasonably priced.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,308 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

I just don’t think URC TV offers enough additional value over Premier. If Premier didn’t exist, and I didn’t subscribe to it, I would seriously consider URC TV. But Premier does exist, and I do subscribe to it, and to be fair it’s rare enough that we have a round like this one where there are three games being skipped, and Premier’s coverage is good generally. And URC TV isn’t worth it on top for the small number of matches Premier does miss.

And despite their limitations I have a lot of admiration for a small Irish company now back from the dead a, what is it third time now, and able to compete in a market with the likes of Comcast (Sky) and Warner Bros Discovery (TNT). I have far more issues with their quite frankly awful treatment of the Top 14 (entire weeks with no live coverage on an all too frequent basis) than how they treat the URC, on which I think they generally do a good job. And I do maintain hope that the new rugby channel will sort the issues with both the URC and Top 14.

Agreed, URC tv looks like a good service, but with a Now TV sports extra sub you are getting 95% of the games anyway, along with the champions cup and one or two prem and top 14 games a week. I've noticed you can also pause the stream now on Nowtv, which I don't think you could up until recently. Its a pretty handy service

Ah, I don't live in Ireland so I find URC TV to be transformative. I've gone from hunting for dodgy streams to paying a very reasonable fee to watch every single game live and on demand as I choose.

It's unfortunate not every single game is live on TV but I think the URC product is only getting better and better.

Be careful what you wish for, you might end listening to Ryan Wilson on Premier. A duo of him and Cahill fuels my nightmares.

Ryan Wilson is actually like a school boy on stage at the xmas play. Some of the carry on is absolute cringe

Literally anyone but Mark Robson is fine.

He’ll be doing Ulster games for Premier Sports this season, I understand.

Embra 15-0 down after 15 min.

    29-0 down now.

Lions can do that to anyone though. Especially when they're at home. Following it online. Pack getting the tar kicked out of them and when in possession they're making awful decisions.

I've no idea why Premier didn't show either game from SA. For the Edinburgh match they were showing a replay of Liverpools CL game on Premier 1 and they're currently showing a number of non live programs on Premier 2.

Really it is time to buy a dodgy box..no top14 and now no Ulster Bulls match. PM for recommendations please.

I don’t know how I managed that! It is indeed Round 3.

Interestingly I recently got Sky Stream to replace Sky Q when I moved house and all rugby coverage of URC on RTE is 'in the clear' rather than geo blocked as with Sky via a dish in N. Ireland. In fact it looks like all sports coverage is also 'in the clear'.

I had got a Saorview aerial installed to ensure I could watch sport on RTE but Sky Stream show it all unblocked. Aerial is however not money wasted as I have VM for other sport.

They're starting to get used to it.....

You could also get a URC TV subscription for €60, fully legal, not dodgy! If you have a decent VPN the British version of Premier Sport could be streamed

I've also heard anecdotally, if you have a sports extra subscription on sky q that premier sports UK can be added via the "other channels" menu
