No, he didn't just randomly come out with it. But equally, was he under no obligation to include it.

Yes, the publishers are likely using the most inflammatory excerpts to promote the book. But equally it's not difficult to imagine that Sexton's reason for including excerpts like this wasn't just for the sake of promoting the book.

I don't see the problem in posters discussing it, even if they haven't been around here in months.

Sorry, hang on, I'll stop you right there. I have absolutely no problem with it. I was just pointing out the amusing hypocrisy of it.

If we grant you all this, it still doesn’t necessarily mean what they’re saying isn’t accurate. Why can’t we focus on that?

Or, put another way, why can’t we attack the post and not the poster?

It’s not difficult to suggest a correlation between a poster being absent for months and, immediately on their return, being called bitter for having an opinion on Sexton that differs to yours…

I'm not attacking anything or anyone, neither post nor poster.

Of course it's accurate. Sexton being a spikey character, a bit of a mouth and likely to react badly to being riled up as his career has ended, what part of that is surprising or up for debate? If you're suggesting I can't see Sexton for what he is, I'm happy to set you straight on that point also.

It’s not difficult to suggest a correlation between a poster being absent for months and, immediately on their return, being called bitter for having an opinion on Sexton that differs to yours…

I have literally no idea what this means. I'm not sure you do either tbh.

More Munster vs Leinster crap going on here. Honestly it's like Liverpool and United fans which is very sad. You'd expect better from rugby fans.

The other 22 Irish players managed to be gracious.

You were literally implying other posters were bitter… for saying something that you’re now agreeing is accurate.

    Anyways…

    I ¢an think of $om€ r€a$ons…

All going well a retired rugby player is on this planet for another 50-60 years. And their main stream of income their entire adult life until that point has stopped.

Maximise the income while you have the relevance and there is a market of people who want to hear your story.

This. Posts on any social media create interest. Good and/or bad. Anyway I've read enough biographys about ex players to realise I won't be reading another.

It was a mildly sardonic observation on an amusing but harmless lack of self-awareness.

You're trying to blow this up into something it's not, so knock yourself out.

If I'm ever going to read another rugby bio, I at least want to know it's going to be open and honest with some juicy stuff in there. I'll never forgive Peter Stringer for his effort, and Leo Cullen captaining us to three Heineken Cups is utterly negated by his book. Joe Schmidt, christ.

Jonny's book is absolutely coming my way on Christmas morning so here's hoping this Ioane thing isn't the highlight of it.

Don't forget, income on books is also tax-free so it's a no-brainer for players to do it. I just wish they'd do it better.

Did they have the same interactions? Didn’t realise that. Ioane must have been busy.

Pretty much all sport biographies are awful that I’ve read, it’s incredibly successful people talking about their success. They then need to try jam some minor controversies in to make it seem interesting. I’ve long since given up on them, I barely care about them off the pitch when they are playing and lose interest when they retire. It’s a side bar of celebrity culture and Really it’s just people doing their jobs.

I'll try to warn my family not to bother with the sports book at Christmas. Unfortunately one of the grandchildren will gift me it. I'll say 'thank you' through gritted teeth. Upon which, my wife will whisper 'You're an ungrateful b@st@rd'.

Ahh Christmas don't you love it.

The only one I can say I've enjoyed in the last while is the Keith Earls one where he's pretty open about his mental health struggles, something you wouldn't ordinarily get from sports books of that nature.

    re-gifting is always an option…

which of your family members do you hate most?? 😜

I mean I think Ioane looks particularly bad here especially considering NZ didn’t even win the bloody tournament. The recent comments from Dagg don’t come off great either. NZ didn’t win the World Cup because their whole approach and motivation was driven by resentment and the massive chip on their shoulder they had after losing a test series to us on their home turf, being trashed by SA in the rugby championship and get hammered by france in the group stages. That resentment anger that they used to fuel motivation and edge out victories can only get you so far. It cost them in the final as their aggression brought out indiscipline and Cane went off with a red. It would benefit them to become more humble as a group, this defensive ‘attitude’ isn’t working for them.

Haven't read a player's book in years as most of them are boring as hell. The only one that stands out for me as a good read was Eric Rush's as he included some funny off field stories. If I get hold of a copy of Earls' I'll give it a read.

imagine getting All In by Jamie Heaslip (Matt Cooper) from your family secret santa. I hit the drink early that Christmas.

Stan Wright should write a book with Roddy Doyle. Mad about dog.

I’ve read a few that have been good reads: would agree Keith Earls’ book was good, Trevor Brennan had an interesting one too and an older but very interesting one is JPR Williams’ book.

Why though? would you not be interested in hearing more about our tech world's relentless innovation and the rugby team's resilience thats echoed in our startups?

If Stan Wright wrote it I might!

David Knox. Get that man to put out a book. Someone not afraid to give an opinion and doesn’t care who he upsets.

fyi I listened to Joe Molloys recent interview with Paul O’Connell.

    Well worth a listen.
Mentions some of the things he wrote about in his book - The Joe Schmidt detail and analysis around rucks and how he went about reintroducing that when he came into the Ireland coaching.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,238 ✭✭✭Rugbyf565

hot take- I’ve seen enough, (aside from JGP) Ben Murphy is the best scrum half in Ireland at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 149 ✭✭thePigeon_

Wouldn't have any arguments there, but if you take JGP out the bar is unfortunately not that high. Should be in the AI squad over one of the Munster 9s, I wouldn't mind which one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,076 ✭✭✭50HX

Yes absolutely should be swept in based on the last 3 games with no regard for the stage of the competition or opposition....sure what could gi wrong eh?

He's had an impressive start to the season, let's get him tested further & see

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 149 ✭✭thePigeon_

Please explain what could go wrong?

I said we should include him in the squad not start him v NZ.

Also I don’t see what point is being made about the quality of opposition when one of his competitors was made to look bang average by Zebre.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,017 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

Casey was good against Zebre. Just most others around him were absolutely awful. (You can’t blame Casey for gifting Zebre the ruck).

Realistically it’d be a big surprise to see him in the AI squad ahead of either Casey or Murray.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,450 ✭✭✭FtD v2

At some point it’ll be the right time to move on from Conor Murray - he turns 36 this season. It’s similar to Cian Healy, but here there seem to be viable alternatives unlike at LHP.

Ben Murphy has probably been the form Irish player of the URC so far this season IMO.

ffs 6 nations 2025 and summer tests after are the only chances to take risks and really build a new squad 2 years before RWC. B.Murphy, H.Gavin C.Forde have to be tried on a regular basis now or never (and Hurley Langton in training squads if legally possible)
