Mother of god lads, I think the two of you need a new hobby……..

Ah sorry, I mis-understood. I thought you were saying he'd have the Indo stuff done by 4 and then go on the air at 7. Sorry!

I'd say Mediahuis made Joe an offer he couldn't refuse. Coupled with not having to be in work for afternoons-evenings as well as all day Sunday, I'd say it was a no-brainer. All media outlets are investing heavily in online content, it is a matter of time before they put Joe behind the paywall for subscribers only. But to be frank, I will be one of those signing up because he is worth it, unlike the 50 hours Ger had promised, much of which is garbage I will never listen to.

Depends on the price and the quality of the content of course. If OTB was 5e a month I'd probably pay it and this would likely have to come under that.

To compete with Second Captains, they'd need a pretty massive free subscriber base first before converting to paid. Second Captains pulling in well over 100k listeners on their Indo pod before going behind a paywall. It will take them a long time to be able to compete.

The Indo would like keep it free imo and use ads to pay for it?

It won't just be a sports offering though. This will undoubtedly be "Sign up to Irish Independent and get podcast content including Joe Molloy".

The Indo gave a years subscription earlier this year for €50 or something. If Joe is behind the paywall in a few months and it is bundled in this, it will still make it a good deal.

On a side note, everything to do with the OTB subscription is incredibly cack-handed. Even if I was a subscriber, I would be peed off with how everything is lumped in together on that Go Loud app, and how they don't just have a dedicated OTB app for your subscription. I use the 3 free listens but it annoys me no end that if you listen to 5 minutes and then come back to it, that is considered 2 of your 3 podcasts.

But the user experience is absolutely crap, why not just go with Patreon like most other subscription podcasts do.

Alan Quinlan on AM this morning was laughable. Unable to criticise Munsters performance at the weekend.

Too close to the coaching team to give an unbiased opinion.

The dancing around it was comical

If that's the case, I'd be far less likely to sign up. I've very little interest in the Independent outside of their sports coverage.

For me it will very much depend on price and quality. I already have SC and Joe would need to offer me something. That's just me tho and maybe I'm outside their market.

I agree with OTBs offering being very unfriendly customer wise. Even something so simple as if you sign up on Spotify, you can only listen there is shite. Just us Patreon like everyone else.

Does Richie live up on the side of a mountain or something? He still appears to be on dial up Internet.

Just shows how tight they are with their costs that after 4 years working from home they haven't bought him a decent microphone for radio.

i dont understand their "your subscription only applies to your platform" issue that if you go to another platform you cant hear it (unless you pay again!), yet i can use SC World Service on any platform they are on for my sub.

listened to Joes podcast from yesterday. Was good, nothing outrageous but good.

Dan McDonnell has removed OTB from his Twitter bio, no real surprise but a big loss to the show all the same. Keith Treacy seems to be the main football go to guy, really don't understand how he gets so much airtime on tv and radio he's very average.

This has been a chronic problem with rugby analysis in this country for years.

It's a very small community. They went to the same schools. They played on the same teams. Their dads are business partners etc

Brian O Driscoll for.example is just totally compromised from any objectivity re Leinster given his ties.

There is huge question marks over their relative underachievement recently given their resources. I heard his interview with Leo Cullen a few weeks ago. It was a pure puff piece.

I've never rated O'Driscoll as a pundit. Always felt he ran everyone he said through a PR filter before it came out of his mouth. He just never clicked with me.

Even when talking about non-Leinster or Irish performances, I still felt he was being very careful with his words.

    It was very solid.

    And crucially important, free.

Seems like a direct competitor to Second Captains. 5 days a week and 2 on a Monday is the probable schedule which is the same as Second Captains.

Ronan Mullen (not that one) who is ex OTB is joining Joe from next week he said.

That's quite the approach if true. Straight-laced Joe going h2h with your Earlys, McDevitts, Murphys of this world.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,251 ✭✭✭dominatinMC

Can't see Joe making much headway into their market tbh

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,612 ✭✭✭Felexicon

The Indo Sport podcast is good. Great line up.

Off the Ball will need to react. Because of it they've lost a lot of their usual journalist contributors.

Ex pros can only cover so much. You need lads who are on the beat (Dan McD on all things FAI) to get the more meaty stuff.

I know he is marmite but I hope to see Paul Kimmage on with Joe a bit

    Sign me up.

Listened to the football one on Monday. Its ok. Just feels like listening to OTB back in the day which is good.

I like Eoin Sheahan, and Will is a good presenter, but it all feels very flat on OTB now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 327 ✭✭sub3wannabe

Be interesting to see how they navigate this one. Basically ban on gambling advertising before 9pm. AM Show won't be allowed reference William Hill and OTB won't be able to until after 9.

I also wonder what it will mean forThe Cash Machine.

You'd wonder what OTB's unique selling point is now? They've lost Joe Molloy. Probably lost all the Irish Independent contributors who will be told to focus on the Indo Sport podcast. There are loads of rugby podcasts out there that cover rugby better than they do. Will and Tommy do a good job with their respective GAA shows I think. But overall there isn't a whole lot there now that would make the average punter want to subscribe. Unless I'm missing something.

Heard Joes interview with PoC it wasc very enjoyable To my mind Joe is such agoogd Interviewer and Paul was very relaxed I hope it becomes a huge sucess in time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 24,210 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

I think have to give it some time to settle after Joe moving for it to find its feet again.

They lost Irish times contributors for a few years before and found a way to work around it, there's no shortage of people who would be willing to be contributors to replace the Indo ones.

The Indo podcast might end up taking more from the Second Captains market than OTB, time will tell. I've listened to it a bit the last couple of days and it sounds exactly the same as listening to Joe on OTB obviously. Especially when talking to Dan.

OTB is still doing way more hours than the other shows so it's not like they're losing the entire market but it wouldn't be surprised if their members only took a hit. As I said, time will tell.

OTB’s unique selling point? They are on the radio live and far better than rte.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,508 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Ya, was about to say, their unique element is they are on radio.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,779 ✭✭✭✭Ol' Donie

On the other hand Joe's podcast (I presume) won't have news bulletins that jump from the crisis in the middle east to the woman out of Stranger Things putting wedding photos on her instagram account.

I don't know who makes these decisions at Newstalk but honestly, they should not be in that job.

Imagine they've 2-3 minutes and are trying to hit every demographic they can on a list that's in front of them.

Can understand it, to some degree, but it does sound out of place and poorly edited.
