See that's the thing you don't realize. I went back to Kings field 1 because of this image:

    9ar8p1gfpan41.jpg

Just to laugh at the graphics. And they are hilariously bad. And then an hour had pasted before I knew it and I was hooked.

Good games are good games forever regardless of graphics.

Ah yeah, I wouldn't have meant the graphics were that bad that it'd put me off completely, more so just the order in which I've played the games means going back to DS1 at this point, you lose so many improvements (not just graphics, but general gameplay mechanics, QoL measures etc) which have been incorporated and evolved since. I find the Souls games difficult enough to get into at the start each time, which will no doubt be compounded by DS1 being older than the others.

I actually want to play a few older games (not FromSoftware, just generally), which is what I find great about the Steamdeck and PS Portal. I've emulated the SD and loaded on some PS1 & PS2 games, and I've also been tipping away at MGS1 on the PS Portal inbetween DS3 (I don't find the Portal precise enough for something like DS3 as there can be slight lag and input errors).

I wonder will black Friday have some money off. They did a €50 off the console and €100 off psvr2 recently. Think it was for the playstation days of play event.

There is no reason why Fromsoft couldn't introduce P's system other than they're a little high off their own farts regarding vague, obtuse questlines and the frustration it generates.

It's even worse in an open world like Elden Ring too. I was exploring the DLC and then I suddenly get a message on the screen about a world event and that has automatically advanced questlines I didn't even know about.

Beat way to play souls games is to go in expecting to not have a clue what's going on and accept you'll fail or not finish quests. Trophies aren't important in the grand scheme of things.

I know the one you're talking about; once you approach Messmer's castle a message pops up about Miquella's charm breaking or something. The worst part was I killed a pig enemy thing a second before it popped up and I was extremely confused about why that pig thing was so important.

I wouldn't say FS are high on their own farts and whatnot. As Retro says, you're kind of supposed to go into it not succeeding in all the quests, as they're games that encourage multiple playthroughs, experimentation, learning from your mistakes, collaboration and discussion with other players etc. You're not really expected to get the best ending and all side stuff in your very first playthrough. That said, the side mission requirements are sometimes so obfuscated to the point of annoyance. As stated, it usually doesn't matter if you complete them or not, but I do like experiencing as much of the content as I can, and so if I do something innocuous that locks me out of other NPCs or stuff, it's just annoying.

I think that message just signified a barrier being passable now anyway

What's the story with PS Pulse 3D headphones, are they not better for PS gaming ... ? Vs the headphones above ? Do the above headphones support PS 3D/surround audio ... or is it just some gimmick ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,408 ✭✭✭✭J. Marston

It's not a faithful adaptation unless Kiryu skulls a lad with a bicycle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,945 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

It's a branding term. There's nothing really special about the Sony headsets and compared to some of their actual headphones they sound "crap".

I have the Pulse 3D ones and they just aren't very comfortable, are really flimsy and the battery is only ok (I've a set of Astro A50 from 2016 and they are far better in all these areas).

Ok, I'll stick to the wired headphones I have ... quick check what they are ... "Audio-Technica M50x Professional Monitor Headphones". Not really gaming headphones as there is no mike, but I don't play online multiplayer.

I like how From games play with narrative fragmentation, the lack of closure. There's a lot of immersion to find with their games if you really get into trying to figure out the opaque parts of its lore. Rather than just have it doled out in a youtube video, demystifying the whole thing as something totally ordinary.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,109 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I find them great to just get lost in. The atmosphere and environmental storytelling are excellent, looking up the lore is optional to me. I don't think they've managed to too the first Dark Souls for how it manages to integrate gameplay mechanics and unreliable NPCs but their world building is better than anyone else's and I love that they aren't so in love with their lore that they can leave their lore bible aside and not hit the player with boring codex and lore dumps.

I kind of find that sometimes knowing the lore can spoil the atmosphere of the game. Baroque is a game I adore the art and atmosphere of but if you read up on the actual backstory it's kind of rote sci fi, whereas just playing the game was such a weird lynchian experience. Same with the awful translation of FF7. My mind came up with a much more interesting story for that game but playing the more accurate translation patch it's really just a load of anime tropey nonsense.

Pretty crappy reminder that there's real people behind your favourite games:

Was thinking a killer app for Nintendo would be an open world Nintendogs. They could use the same engine as BOTW (not the **** open world pokemon one). Basically a walking simulator with dogs.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,109 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

    Nintendo killer app:

    Releases switch 2.

Already has more and better exclusives than the PS5.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,048 ✭✭✭Mr.Saturn

Even killerer app would be to just polish up the open-world Pokemons to the point they don't either a) look like an N64 beta or b) about to collapse in on themselves constantly. Legends Arceus was a really fun game held back by time constraints — TPC/Game Freak have an absolute monster game in them if they were let step off the hamster-wheel of perpetual releases for minute.

For the life of me I can't understand why Nintendo don't share the BOTW/TOTK engine within Nintendo and their very close partners. Maybe it's not easily shared technically or politically in Nintendo.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,109 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Game Freak are their own entity and the engine might not have been ready for them. Also game freak are a third party despite the close relationship with Nintendo so that Zelda tech would be at risk of leaking.

The thing that people don't understand about those ugly looking pokemon games is that the pokemon games more often than not have been very low tech. I mean there's no excuse for the last few pokemon games looking like they are running on a Voodoo2 on the tribes 2 engine. However on twitter all I'm seeing is people not interested in Pokemon making a massive deal out of how pokemon looks and how it sucks now and on the other side are the people that love pokemon saying, yeah it looks awful but legends and the last pokemon games are the most fun the series has ever been.

Some very upsetting things happening on twitter at the moment in terms of videogame discussion.

Not only is there Resident Evil 6 was actually a great game historical revisionism we also have FF13 was peak gaming and.... Peak narrative.

People really can get away with saying anything on there since Musk took over. 😡

Is Resident Evil 6 regarded as one of the worst in the series?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,370 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

Of the main series I think so, there are prob worse spin-offs. I played it and rushed through it but I still had some fun in a few set pieces. But generally, it's the least imaginative.

I played through 1-8 recently so had to play it for completion sake. 🤣

Everything post-USUM has been almost obnoxiously half-baked and modern GF are a far cry from the company that bled ever inch of performance out of the DS and 3DS (Ultra Sun felt like it could kill OG model 3DS). It's deeply frustrating as a long-time fan to see stuff that's still beta-level shooting out the hatch when the talent and resources are there, but some chud in a boardroom decides lines must go up at particular intervals and you get something like Legends Arceus being the game you always wanted, but looking like a Unity asset flip and performance so inconsistent you'd swear it was SWERY product. I'm actually surprised the visuals of PLA annoy me so much, but the lack of polish feels so galling for what's the highest grossing media franchise of all time.

What's worse, I'm still buying them. Finished Scarlet after the deluge of patches and was still softlocked at various junctures because the modern PKMN engine is pretty much a tin of beans with a Pokedex on top.

    Yes by a long shot.

Although people swear by mercenaries mode. I'm half expecting Ropedrink to appear and defend the game.

And while I appreciate that mercenaries mode does have a lot of depth with a move set that makes it more inline with a devil may cry game the single player campaign is awful with the Gigante section of Chris's campaign possibly the worst thing Ive played since some of the worst **** on the Commodore 64.

Silent Hill 2 is reviewing well - as cynical as I was (and frankly still am) about this project, I'm happy for Bloober Team delivering something well-received. They seem to have put in the work. While I still think much of what impresses about the original is lost when you make it more of a modern over-the-shoulder perspective game - hence why I'm sticking with the OG version for now - at least it isn't the disaster some of those early trailers and the developer choice very much suggested.

I have no idea why it's now suddenly double the length though. No need for it to be a 15-20 hour game when the original is still a plenty subsantial meal.

Yeah I'm surprised at the reviews but seems it's a good surprise. It seems like they didn't mess with the story at all and stuck to it very rigidly, even the dialogue is almost word for word.

It's good to see a developer hone their craft and become much better. Layers of Fear was really bad but then again Mercurystream went from making one of the worst Metroidvanias of all time to making Metroid Dread.
