I was called acting the D1ck by the other poster I don't think a haha or here we go again is attitude enough to warrant this but here we are.

I referred to you as a Dub head in the collective and the point I was making is that unless it's there it's a speculative no go. I don't care where you are originally from you are from Dublin in regard to this.

Most of the shows I go to the venues are helped filled by South Americans all the better for it and keeps certain shows rolling in.

Majority of people are mobile enough to go to something 9 months away it's really dependent how much you really genuinely want to go…Saying otherwise isn't in line with the reality people commonly travel to gigs!

I have no intent with a Dublin v Cork slant. I'm in Tipp...Cork is 2 hours away from me and not as accessible...Dublin is 3.

So yes to see Belfast and Dublin with the best connections in the country and not as far moan that are ruled out of going because it's just not convenient is certainly grating.

The reason for that week being an issue is clarified in my reply that you don't seem to have registered but you choose to see it about " travelling " .

The fact is most gigs are split between more than one city and you slated me because I had the cheek , according to you to wonder if they might do the same with this one . The reason why wasn't necessary until you chose to have a go ...Do I have to list my reasons for every comment to avoid somebody taking umbrage ?

This is an otherwise non confrontational thread about music .

This is a misunderstanding as I see it . Lets not be making it something more .

Actually yes the reason given was there may be gigs in Iveagh/Trinity the same week you are interested I didn't think that was worth noting you aren't genuinely interested in going to the particular show, it's something to do were it on the doorstep but the unknown doorstep shows take preference. No confusion.

My discussion was a generalisation or so I thought not necessarily directed at you but the sentiment is sourced from your post, boards used to be attack the post not the poster but any hint of negativity it doesnt matter the cord is soon cut, no discussion.

My original post may be mocky/jokey of sorts but I don't see how it can be constructed as aggressive, I guess we do live in different times.

Like stillill posted in your defence to note I surely misread you but all you've done is clarify of course not the case.

I don't need to know your personal story and the fact is most gigs are not spread between cities they are spread between 2 cities you even acknowledge this in your last post.

The Weather Station playing The Button Factory on Saturday 8th March. Should be a great gig

Unfair to apply this to @Goldengirl and @Stillill42 i believe. They were simply responding to an unnecessary attack.
Anyway all appears to be done and dusted, the odd bone of contention here is no great harm.

    What attack?

I'm being wound up here, how is questioning the lack of effort displayed by Dubs (not just the poster) towards venturing beyond the Pale for a gig offensive?

I was the one labeled a D1ck in this occurance. Touted as being from Cork even!

It's done and dusted but let's not try pretend it was me in an echo chamber.

Also this is a discussion about gigs in 2025 it's not like we went off track, there are lots of posts in any thread not relevant to me just move on if it doesn't suit not into being beckoned towards PMing.

Let's never speak of it again.

Is Scotland the only country where 'Arena events' take place in a non Capital city ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,848 ✭✭✭✭bodhrandude

Well Glasgow is bigger than Edinburgh even though Edinburgh is the capital, Glasgow has a few amazing venues for decent capacity's and is better served for gigs than Edinburgh.

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

The Capital of the UK is London.

    Katowice,Stuttgart,Arnhem,Milan,Zurich, Antwerp etc etc.

I guess Poland or Switzerland is basically what you looking for other cities taking preference to Warsaw and Zurich is typically the destination rather the Bern.

Big events in Brazil frequently take place in Rio or Sao Paulo rather than Brasilia.

Thankfully, most events in Ireland take place in Dublin, making it much easier for me to get to. 😉

The capital of Scotland ain’t London, that’s for sure

London is the capital of England. Nothing to do with Scotland.

2 arenas in Manchester, both bigger then the main one in London. Birmingham has 2, but both smaller than the O2

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,131 ✭✭✭✭Seathrun66

The Co-Op Arena in Manchester is larger at 23.5k capacity, Millenium Dome is 23k and the original Manchester AO Arena is 21k.

And re the original post, multiple countries have arenas outside the parliamentary cities, particularly those with relatively small capitals - Australia, Brazil, New Zealand, the USA, Canada, etc.

A bigger question is whether Ireland could sustain a third arena, one that could service the Munster and Connacht. Locate it near Limerick and that's a 70-80min journey for those from Galway or Cork, on the doorstep of the locals and very reachable also from Clare, Tipperary & Kerry. Cheaper accommodation than Dublin, closer than Belfast, and doable in a round trip where you'd be home by 12.30. No reason for acts doing the two bigger cities not to play there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,666 ✭✭✭Fanirish

the event centre in cork will cover that when it’s built.
even then I don’t think cork will even get that many acts to sustain such a venue

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,029 ✭✭✭deisedude

We'll all be long dead before that Events Centre comes to Cork

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,131 ✭✭✭✭Seathrun66

That's only 6k if I'm right? Not enough to grab most acts that play the arenas in Dublin and Belfast.

Hence I suggested somewhere larger within reasonable driving distance of three cities and several counties. Will it happen? Probably not. Could it work? I believe so with a large potential demographic, cheaper accommodation and the option of driving home after the gig.

acts that can sell 14k in Dublin won’t do more than 5k in cork or thereabouts.
It’s hard enough for promoters to get big international artists for one night in Dublin in 14k venue, not going to get a lot to do smaller venue in cork area/Munster region.
You don’t get a ton of international acts doing Belfast and dublin, it’s usually one night in ireland.
you’ll get more Irish and uk acts maybe but that’s it.
