Current plan expires tonight midnight (BG Green Free Time Sat Electricity w/ 32% discount)
    Rates inc VAT day/night/peak: 26.63 / 28.91 / 32.42)
Renewal offer is only 17% discount.
BG new customer deal; (EV New Elec Only and €150 Credit with EV Charger Install): 33% off (24.47/ 18.45 / 34.13 / 6.24 for EV) is not as good as other providers below for night & peak (even after BG's as yet unofficial but anticipated 5% minimum cut in Nov/Dec to match or beat Electric Ireland's Nov 1st 5% cut). €150 credit won't apply (no EV charger install within the next year).

Other providers (just from going to their websites):

    1. Energia Smart Data (30% discount). Rates: 26.33 / 14.10 / 27.60
      . EAB: €1157.22

    2. SSE Airtricity Smart Day/Night/Peak (Urban Smart 1yr Fixed DD & eBill): Rates: 24.57 / 15.94 / 31.04 VAT
    EAB: €1164.21

Anyone seen/got anything better than #1 or #2 above?

What is the FIT rate from energia these days?
All I see on their website is (from a "latest news" on May 2024):
"Energia is pleased to offer a rate of 24c per kWh to our residential customers".

Just wondering if that's still the rate.

I was with BG and contract ended on 21st September. Plan I had was Free time Saturday. I was paying:

    Day

    0.2557

    Night

    0.1879

    Peak

    0.3124

    Gas: 6.37

New offer was 15% discount and prices have increased significantly. Also no credits were given.

    Day

    0.329

    Night

    0.242

    Peak

    0.402

    Gas: 0.094

Checked with Flogas and their rates with 300 credit (without Free Time Saturday), were

    Day

    0.293537

    Night

    0.228682

    Peak

    0.347165

    Gas: 0.088181

So I decided to move to Flogas.

Energy Pal is saying SSE have a day/night plan with a 21.87 p/KwH. I can't see anything on their website. Closest Ex-Vat rate I can see is 24.05. Anyone else able to locate the rate as per energypal?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 870 ✭✭✭iknorr

Im looking for this now also, i cant see it on their site.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,625 ✭✭✭batistuta9

energypal isn't updated that regularly, there's a few plans there that aren't available anymore. I'd just use it as guide with bonkers & switcher.

where they all fall down is they're guiding you on past usage. if going to a smart plan, still need to work it out yourself as best you can

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 870 ✭✭✭iknorr

Spoke with them on the phone. The agent wasnt aware of that pricing. Shes been there for a few months.

Entry on energypal was on the 30 Aug. Could it be an error or a special retaining rate?

Either way she said it wasnt available anymore if it was previously but never saw those prices herself.

SSE's current day/night standard meter plan has a day rate of 24.05c, including VAT, and a night rate of 14.91c. Energy Pal has the correct figure for the night rate, so I'm guessing the incorrect day rate is a typo.

    SSERates.png

Note: EnergyPal is not always perfectly up to date, but I have found them to be responsive when I point out things that need to be changed/added, so if you see something like this that needs updating use the Contact form on the site to reach out. You'll be helping everyone who uses the site.

Also, you can add tariffs on the site yourself (that only you will see), so if there are tariffs that are out of date, wrong or missing use the Add Plan buttons to set tariff prices for yourself and see the results straight away.

No i think that's correct, good low day rate but expensive night rate.

This is late reply, but it might be useful to somebody.

BG has a higher rate at 9.27c / kWh, but a lower standing charge (€131.69 vs SSE's €152.31) and a €50 welcome bonus.

So which works out cheaper depends on your usage.

Taking the standing charges and welcome bonus into account, if you use 6,835 kWh over a year, at those rates both tariffs would work out the same. SSE is cheaper above that usage and BG is cheaper below that usage.

Every additional 1,000 kWh usage above 6,835 kWh makes the SSE tariff about €10 cheaper (for a year) than BG. For example using 8,835 kWh would make the SSE option about €20 cheaper. Similarly every 1,000 kWh below 6,835 kWh makes BG cheaper by about €10.

So BG is cheaper if you don't use a lot of gas.

very nice, informative and insightful answer, many thanks even though I wasn’t asking ;)

On SSE's website for the fixed rate plan it states: "You've chosen to sign up for our fixed rate offer... You will be placed on a rate applicable to your meter type"

I have a smart meter with a standard plan at the moment. I assume if I sign up with SSE online they will move me to a smart plan or am I reading that incorrectly?

I initiated a switch from Engergia to Flogas.

Haven't had a call from there retention team. How long where you guys waiting ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,353 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

No they "shouldn't" as your meter status is showing as 24hr, I hate when they write stuff like that, probably best to contact them for confirmation. It should read as your meter status not meter type.

is it better to go for a variable or fixed gas rate as of today, would anyone have any advice? Thank you

Price changes in the short to mid-term (12 months) are already known by the industry, as most of their capacity is bought in advance. Overall, you can expect that your future average variable price for the next 12 month will be the same as the fixed price for 12 months you are being offered.

There will always be small differences, but no one can tell you which one will end up being slightly more interesting than the other. There is no need to take that aspect in consideration, unless you have a personal preference for one model over the other.

    TLDR: it doesn't matter.

Anything to be concerned about agreeing to switch when reps call to your door? Not something I've done before, but I have had Energia here offering a much better rate (than current Bord Gais) plus €50 to cover break fee. They're going to call back later.

I've checked it out online and it seems a good option for me once break fee is covered (in contract until end Feb 25). Extra €18 annual standing charge, but 4.97c per unit lower which will nearly cover the difference in one bill. Looking online it seems only Yuno is cheaper and that requires activating smart meter which I don't want.

Anything to be concerned about agreeing to switch when reps call to your door?

Don't believe a word they say and confirm everything over the phone. Plenty of stories on this thread of people being told X only to be put on Y rates.

If you can't find it online/over the phone, then what they're offering you isn't available.

Door sales have always quoted me without including VAT. Make sure thats included. Ive found them pushy most of the time bamboozling with figures. Generally I would never agree to switch at the door, but if you‘ve done your homework (checked bonkers etc) and the rate is better why not I guess. If you do agree at the door, ring Energia a few days later (during cooling off period) to make sure everything is as agreed to hopefully all good 👍 & let us know how it pans out 🙂

ring Energia a few days later (during cooling off period)

Triple check that switching at the door doesn't activate a smart meter (if that's not what you want). Once it's activated, it's activated. You can't undo that even in the cooling off period.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,790 ✭✭✭Hippodrome Song Owl

Thanks for the advice. I already specifically said I only want a 24h rate and will not be activating smart meter, but will check again.

On Energia website it says including VAT it's 23.61c and €236.62 standing charge 24h rate. Current Bord Gais contract is €218.55 standing charge and 28.58c including VAT.

It's the offer to cover the break fee which makes the switch attractive. I don't see anything about that online though.

he’s probably telling lies and would likely hang uiu out to dry on a smart meter, the man at the door just wants his commission

Best thing I ever got was a ring doorbell, some of them won’t take no for an answer, eir phone watch caught herself off guard and the salesperson couldn’t understand why we didn’t want their set up even though it’s really cheap

    The internet isn’t for everyone

My 24 HR standard rural electric meter BG less 40% discount due to expire in 2 weeks.

New offer of 25% discount plus €50 cash back will work out at €1382 for my average annual use of 4,200 kWh.

Energia's new customer offer of 38% discount but higher standing charge comes in at €1,292.

Looks like I'll be switching in 2 weeks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,792 ✭✭✭wassie

My situation was exact same as yours, except my contract expired on Saturday. I accepted the new BG offer that day so I wouldnt be paying the standard rate.

Then on Sunday I signed up to the Energia offer. Basically my elec cost is going up by just under a tenner a month, which wont break the bank.

I can't get any reports from ESB Networks now. Was it under the Downloads section of 'My Energy Consumption'? I've tried Firefox and Edge but no joy. Anyone else having an issue?

I've no key to open my meter outside. Was hoping to get a reading from ESB Networks so I can switch to SSE from BG.

Edit: I got the export now. I presume it's the HDF_kW one I use for EnergyPal? I can't seem to find a total meter reading on the reports. I'll have to get a key for the box.
