Gas Boiler Service

Are there any companies that just do gas boiler servicing? I've been on to 4 different plumbers and they're either too busy or don't bother replying when asked. I understand it's probably not a big money maker for them but they all advertise it... But don't seem to want to do it.

    Any recommendations around Leixlip/Lucan?

    Bord Gais

I emailed them when they had the offer a few months ago. The boiler is in the attic so I wanted to make sure they'd be willing to go up and service it. There's a a Stira type stairs up, and it's floored, but I don't fancy paying only for a plumber to arrive and say no thanks. Anyway, long story slightly shorter... Emailed twice, was told twice they'd get back to me and heard nothing.

I wouldnt go near Bord Gais with an older boiler.

If they find a major issue, the service engineer (not full plumber) may not have the skills to resolve it but may shut boiler off for safety reasons.

Installed 2018, but we only moved in last year. I didn't realise that was even a possibility!

Glad I posted because I was going to arrange with them too, moved in last year as well but I will be finding someone else now!

So if there's a safety issue you'd prefer it to be ignored?

When I had gas in a previous house, I always had it serviced via bord gais. It was better value AND I knew it would be done properly.

I had a Dimplex Gas boiler in my last house, about 6 years old. Bord Gais stopped servicing it because spares were no longer available. I got an independent plumber who serviced it, no bother. He gave me a (short) list of the most common Dimplex-specific items, that were most likely to give trouble. I bought all of them and put them by.

No I'd rather they sent someone who had the ability to fix it the poster said they didn't have the skills

Did you question the qualifications of the poster for making such declaration?

I used them, it was serviced and the price was fixed. (Not sure if it's still fixed price)

Didn't ask or need anything further. Ask neighbours who do their servicing - might be the best option.

I always felt that you are at their Mersey. They could say anything with regards as to what is wrong

What are your "qualifications" for your own declarations? Well?

Sometimes you can arrange someone to come out to try to fix the issue through Bord Gais but in my situation they had no capacity. Luckily I was able to get a plumber to come out.

I'm speaking from direct experience. And the plumber I eventually got to sort the issue advised this wasn't the first time it had happened where Bord Gais found a fault in servicing and engineer could not resolve and shut the boiler down. I have zero reason to doubt their word.

Also, a neighbour, Bord Gais serviced their boiler, granted it was an old boiler, but 2 weeks later it died and they had to get plumber out and a replacement boiler.

So if you have an older boiler, in my opinion, you are better off trying to get a plumber, who if he is engaged on the service then had more chance of fixing an issue found. And also as other posters have noted with regard to sourcing replacement parts.

They might not not go as far as to shut of the boiler. But they will advise not to use it.The engineer(the nice ones)will advise where to get a cheaper mtce visit.Best of all is that BGE will very likely cancel their charge.Tread softly.2018 is early days for a boiler.

Look up RGI.ie for registered gas boiler engineers. They are busy

Excellent economy with buying in the spare parts.BGE will try to get you to change.Only do it if total failure. They have supply agreements with certain manufacturers and want an easy life with spares and no provision delays.

Yeah, it was actually a very good boiler apart from the spares issue. The plumber told me it had a stainless steel heat exchanger and should last a long time. Apparently Dimplex stopped making them and pretty much abandoned them.

Anyway, I'm a long way from a gas connection, now.

Anyone who services gas boilers will probably tell you that this is their busiest time of the year. People who have neglected servicing their boiler switch it on when the weather turns and they discover a problem.

Wait a few weeks and they will respond to your calls.

We have a Combi Boiler , how often should it be serviced?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,459 ✭✭✭beachhead

All companies recommend a yearly service. It's up to the individual if they want a yearly service or not.If you signed a gaurantee on it then a yrly service.

Going against the grain maybe, but my boiler is almost 30 years old (Potterton) and has been serviced by Bord Gáis every year for the last 10 of those. I wouldn't let anyone else do it. I also have their 365 Care plan in case it does break down.

For the last 4 or 5 years it's been the same guy who has come each year to service it, and last year his supervisor followed up by coming a few days later to do a quality check so I really have now difficulty in recommending Bord Gáis.

They give you a compliance cert each time as well.

You are lucky with your Potterton.Mine gave up a year ago and BG didn't want to know about repairs, said no parts available-a fan blade.

I'd imagine there are countless boilers being needlessly replaced because of this. Parts are always available but maybe not oe so because they have to go by the book they can't use them.

    MOD NOTE

It is illegal for a non registered gas technician to work on the inside of gas boilers.

Part are not 'always available'. At some point, your boiler will be defunct because it needs a part which is no longer available.

How long depends on the age and the make and model but there isn't a warehouse out there which has parts for every boiler that was ever made.

If anyone can point me to the specific legislation outlawing a home owner repairing their own boiler i'd be happy to read it. All i can find is legislation in relation to the health and safety at work act which wouldn't apply and legislation applying to landlords.

I did find this from a gas company which while describing it as highly unsafe makes no mention of it being illegal unless for landlords for whom there is specific legislation.

The Energy Miscellaneous Provisions Act of 2006 established CRU (then the CER) as the authority to be the authority for this and they enforce this through the natural gas safety regulatory framework.
