    Mod Note:

This thread is for posting/discussing/analyzing CHARTS in the shorter range timeframe up to T120 hours (next 5 days) for Autumn 2024.

If your post does not specifically relate to a chart then it doesn't belong here - Off topic posts will be moved

    Thank you.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nice warm day in the main again tomorrow and then the temps start to slip back a bit, first to the mid to high teens and then more towards the mid teens and lower towards Weds, not bad for a couple of days more before it gets cooler towards midweek with some cold nights. Looks fairly dry for most for the next few days, light misty stuff and light rain if any in some places only giving a trace or a mm or so more so towards the NW.

A bit of a breeze in places on Sun warm into the high teens away from Atlantic coastal counties, bit windy in the Irish Sea, later Mon into Tues getting breezy overland and a bit windy on coasts, weds a bit breezy more so the Northern half of the country.

T+120 shows the high weakening and sliding a bit away to the near continent potentially allowing the Atlantic back, still early days. Bartlett High'ish?

I've been keeping an eye on the charts for Friday, Saturday this week as I have visitors. All three models (Met, Arpege, GFS) showing very very different outcomes even now.

Why is there so much uncertainty at the moment? It was never this bad unless the exact path of a storm being tracked.

The forecast for this weekend was always a bit poor.

The forecast for next week looks great still - HP firmly in control.

Western areas in particular could see a whole week of temps over 20º.

All hangs on whether the high over NE Europe joins up with the one that's going to our SE, if it doesn't i can see the SE one sinking back and allowing the Atlantic to take control back . By no means writing off a decent spell, but its very much still in the balance. SW winds from a high usually mean dull overcast weather at this time of year, whereas easterly ones mean cool in the east but much warmer to the west. I'd prefer a high with a W or NW pivot to it for here in the east. Will be interesting to watch how it evolves.

T120 looking promising this morning. Little to no wind, probably damp and drizzy in the NW but hopefully that will push away northwards. Any cloud elsewhere not moving much.

After todays rain moves offshore and HP builds looks like little or no rain for the next 4 or 5 days. Relatively cool nights in calm airs ,compared to the days highest temperatures, giving foggy patches in parts in the early mornings but should burn off quickly. High teens to low 20's in places throughout the coming days peaking in the late afternoons.

    Fri looking decent too.

Getting quite cool this week, a bit windy along the coasts on Thurs, the East coast could be quite windy for a time, breezy overland Thurs and Fri. A touch of frost perhaps in sheltered places during the week especially the end of the week. Rainfall amounts not huge, need to watch the weekend into the coming week though.

Windy and very wet looking now for Sun into Mon, models showing the area of LP back on the cards, some models look v strong but in average looking like gusts up around 80Kmh in the Southern half and stronger nearer coastal areas, a bit to go, could get stronger again as models get a clearer picture and determine the track better ( being powered by a very fast Jet ). Also looking v wet along Southern coastal counties. Maybe not a storm yet but a bit stronger could name it ( ARPEGE showing a proper storm but a bit early yet , maybe a better idea on tonight's runs. )

    Interesting model watching coming up.

ECM has the worst of the winds way south, maybe strong on the SE coast for a while. Other models have the center of the low a few hundred miles further north.

12Z ECM for 2pm Sunday!! Should be named tomorrow with both rain and wind warnings across the country!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,162 ✭✭✭adocholiday

I wouldn't be getting too excited about any of the 12z runs other than ARPEGE. On average the models are showing that Cork, Waterford and Wexford might see a few hours each of heavy rain and gusts around 80-90km/h on the coasts. It's hardly named storm territory based on any of this evening's charts.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,815 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Yeah adocholiday GFS is underwhelming , ECM as you say far from storm forecast atm.

ARPEGE about the strongest atm followed by ICON but less windy than ARPEGE , UKMO less again so would think that ARPEGE might be overdoing it at this stage.

Rainfall looks heavy along the S and SE on Sun . Currently looking blustery overland and quite windy in coastal areas and windiest in the Southern half of the country. Possible wind and rainfall warnings in Southern counties for now. will see how it unfolds.

Icon deepens also this evening. Quite a swathe of strong winds across the South with heavy rain. Would have thought orange warnings for Southern coastal areas both for wind and rain! Trees in full leaf etc. Surely be named by Met Eireann tomorrow, but whether it is or not its going to be a poor weekend

18z gfs, torrential rain across many Southern parts!

    image.png

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,815 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

That is a lot of rain to fall in less than 24 hrs on Sunday. Close to yellow wind warnings also for parts especially along the S and SE.

ARPEGE is still the strongest but has dialed it down over the last few runs, UKMO is probably a better average of the models at the moment.

Has anybody else noticed that ICON's wind speed is behaving much better now and leans more towards the mean.

Cheers for the update Meteorite. I'd be surprised if us in the northeast avoid the deluge with that setup. Once the winds are from the east across the Irish Sea it's bad news, just like yesterday.

After drought conditions along the East, deluges always seem to arrive to balance things out quickly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,413 ✭✭✭JanuarySnowstor

As I said last night torrential rain for Sunday across the South. Wind also a concern and orange upgrades along the South Coast are certainly possible. Below ECM'S take on ppn

And just as I speak the rainfall warning has been upgraded to Orange!!! A small few critical last night of my predictions but Met Eireann now on board.

My next prediction now is that the wind will also come into focus and a potential orange here also!! Cmon Met Eireann let's get naming this system!! 😆

Orange rain warning ⚠️ has been issued for Cork and Kerry, 12:00 Sunday till 00:00 Monday, I wouldn't be surprised to see any more yellow or orange warnings....

You are on a roll JS well done! EDIT: JS you should start a thread being in your neck of the woods. Could be some flooding from this.

Big jump by ECM all right, that is a lot of rain to fall in a relatively short amount of time.

Quite blustery overland getting up to 70 m/h or so, looks like getting up to 80km/h along the coasts. A tad stronger tonight from the ECM for inland areas especially the Southern half of the country I reckon, a bit more in it?

Makings of a rough enough day along southern counties with the combination of heavy rain and wind, makings of local flooding you would think.

Something that's worth noting also is the worst of the wind is combining with the rain. Quite often the worst of the wind comes afterwards but not Sunday. Worth watching over the next 12 hours but for now Met Eireanns update looks about right...

Yes and from the S and SE too, always appears stronger from there.

Looks like the remnants of Issac and other areas of LP merging well off to the West of Ireland forming a new area of deep LP and whilst staying off to the West bringing in a period of more unsettled weather at the end of the week and over the weekend, breezy to a bit windy at times with frontal bands and showers, rain totals creeping up in places especially the W, SW and S, and some higher temperatures in parts over the coming days and nights not as cool in general.

The airmass set to get unstable around Saturday also with warm plumes of moist air with high Theta E and W readings and added shear with the passage of occluded warm fronts possibly leading to convective weather giving heavy showers and more prolonged heavy rain in parts with thunderstorms possible perhaps.
