I just ventured into OneDrive. I had just deleted a zipped file of pictures of just over 4 gigs, it now tells me I have used 0.2 of my 5gig available space, so according to that I was never over 5 gigs. If its not a scam generally it seems to be some sort of a Microsoft scam.

Any photos I download from my phone - I take very few - are automatically put into OneDrive, from where I find it very convoluted to remove them. I have taken to sending them to myself by email and doing a screen grab when I want to share them somewhere like boards.

Are you using the free 15GB google offer to store stuff? All my stuff gets backed up daily there and I keep an eye on it to always have space free.

After my father died I went through the various things he was signed up to, and it was truly shocking. Not scams per se, but he had gotten emails from all sorts of legit companies saying he needed something and he dutifully signed up. He had a backup solution he was paying for, and all the software did was copy files to an external drive. ~20 quid a month for software that basically does:

    c:\>copy.exe C:\* E:\

AVG Antivirus Professional at 70 odd quid a year, even though MS Defender does the same job for free.

Vodafone 1Gb fibre broadband at 70 odd quid a month, even though he only used email.

Sky Movies HD Box Office add-on at another 50 odd a month, even though, he had no interest in watching a movie 'younger' than Jaws or The Quiet Man.

Legit companies push their products all the time in the hope people will sign on, regardless of whether the person will use it.

hi all…. In a fit of madness I bought a domain name from Blacknight last year. Let’s call it “masala.me”.

I couldn’t get a .ie or a .eu in my name. So took a .me instead.

I did nothing with it for the year cos I really don’t know what I can do. Hence this post!!

So what can I do with it? I am up for renewal and so must decide to keep it or let it go.

at the same time I also joined proton mail and have a ..jon@proton.me.

How can I put the 2 together.

Sorry …just a novice on this side of things

    Many thanks all

Connect it to a hosting site and learn and publish through Word Press? That's one of the most popular methods.

Hostinger, for example. I could give you a referral through a PM if you want.

On the topic, I get what a domain name is (I had one for a project a couple of years ago) but I didn't have much to do with the technical aspects of using it.

What does a hosting site do? Maybe I knew but I have forgotten. Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,960 ✭✭✭10-10-20

It provides the servers from where the website runs. The domain name then is a lookup of the IP address of that host which points to that location where the site is running from. So in effect you can change hosting servers by just modifying the the lookup IP behind the domain name.

It's disgraceful that "reputable" companies are happy to exploit the elderly in this way. No doubt he was convinced to sign up to the broadband he didn't need on the doorstep. Door-to-door seling should be outlawed.

have you got a facebook page? You can link your web-page to your facebook page so that any updates (photos? status updates?) will be seen on your website …. always thought this was easy way to do daily updates without changing code

The large file you deleted may well be still in your OneDrive recycle bin. Empty the bin.

Can anyone tell me how to get into my government digital postbox please? It tells me my info is invalid. I try through Mygov.ie and can't find the postbox, it won't let me create another account, I am stuck.

I have done this before I think), but doing it once does not guarantee I will be able to remember how to do it again (this is O&O and life is getting very frustrating). I have the info noted down so I thought I knew how to access it.

There is no information on the official digital postbox site how to use it, just what it is, which is useless. I cannot find any way to communicate with them to ask (mind you I am frazzled at this stage).

Are you able to log in to mygov.ie with the credentials or does it tell you it's invalid there too?

Try using an incognito window in case it's a cookie issue.

I can get into Mygov.ie but I can't see where the postbox is once I am in there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,739 ✭✭✭✭looksee

!!!!!! I had been on that page, and signed in, and it sent me a code which it accepted, but didn't take me to the digital post box. That time however I got straight into it. That is weird. I went through that rigmarole several times. Thanks anyway!

I never heard of that postbox before. I wonder is their anything in mine…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,739 ✭✭✭✭looksee

There won't be anything in it till you have signed up for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 46,892 ✭✭✭✭muffler

Click on the link that says "show all services" or something like that when you are logged into MyGov. You will then see the digital postbox listed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,739 ✭✭✭✭looksee

Ah, I have discovered what the issue might be. I am randomly connecting with an old email address - long out of use and I only relatively recently connected to postbox. The correct address is in my profile so I don't know how the other one is getting involved.

If you go to the main podcast page there's an option to download https://www.rte.ie/radio/podcasts/series/34139-liveline-podcast-version (go via RSS and just click on the one you want)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,909 ✭✭✭dball

its probably been taken away (the facility to download episodes) - you can however use the share link and copy and paste the link into another browser or into a phone search engine like google - and it will open it in a new tab or window - depending on what you are using to listen to it from - You will need wifi or a data connection

    image.png

Its the blue box just there - click on it and then choose the option "click to copy link" - then paste that text into a tab or window on your device

If you have a smart phone you can download episodes individually on the Pocket casts app: https://play.pocketcasts.com/discover
set up an account for free - from your phone - in the play store or apple store search "pocketcasts" then once in search liveline and then pick an episode you want to download to your phone, then listen back - this wont need an internet connection to listen to it - only to download it

Liveline podcast is available on Spotify and the download option is straightforward there (its the little down arrow beside the + under the running time of each episode

Is there an "Unsubscribe" option on the bottom of the emails? If not block them in your email like below.

Block the Sender in Your Email Provider (e.g., Gmail, Outlook):

    • Gmail:
      • Open an email from promotion@aliexpress.com.
      • Click the three vertical dots (More) in the upper right corner.
      • Select "Block promotion@aliexpress.com."
    • Outlook:
      • Open the email.
      • Click on "Junk" in the toolbar.
      • Select "Block Sender."
