Will there be future boxes ? They seemed to lose interest very quickly

I think people lost interest. I never got one.

A STB designed by committee and didn't give people what they wanted. It would be interesting to see how much money they spent developing it.

The focus is now on the player and IP for the future

I've said it before somewhere, maybe not here, but doing some sort of deal with the BBC to reuse the iplayer technologies and just piggy backing off of that seems to me like the best way forward - it'd then be compatible with all sorts of TVs and boxes and firesticks. RTE player is so clumsy and incompatible in comparison. I've got it on the firestick, but it isn't straightforward to install it.

Yeah i think people were hoping that the connect box would have an integrated saorview and Uk free to air EPG but saorview seemed to have always been reluctant, to even promote the availability of Uk free to air channels in Ireland via free to air satellite, indeed during the digital switch over campaign, most talking heads in the media on the topic seemed to think free to air satellite meant "dodgy boxes" or obscure Arabic channels

You cant expect RTÉ to promote the competition even if every dog on the street knows it's there.

    😉

TThe Saorview connect box software was based on the Metaphor software used by Freesat, epg, recommendations, players, excluding VM. That software would have been licensed, at what cost and sales figures would have to justify the cost.

As regards the iplayer, is it Sky or Eir have a restricted version of the iplayer, with their commercial strength, they couldn't get the player, plus to use the player, in the UK, you need to register your tv license number. There is also the rights issue, imagine VM if could call up Graham Norton on the iplayer after they have licenced the programme to broadcast here.

Sky have a cut down iPlayer on SkyQ boxes at least. Never had to enter or register a tv licence number to view iPlayer though

Oh, any time I've tried, this notice comes up.

It's generous to call it even a cut down version on sky Q. It's more a small selection of BBC shows available to download. They are mostly catch-up from the previous week and very far from exhaustive.

Saorview Connect was good when it worked.

Recording Saorview Channels with serial link was good and being able to watch another channel while recording.

The satellite FTA channels were a mess, yes the programme guide was fast but only showed now and next.

If you tried to edit the satellite channels it was all good until a channel changed frequency or you wanted to add a new channel and the list became a total mess.

The internet function of RTE and TG4 Player were hit and miss.

However my connect box has now failed as it just keeps rebooting, so I've retired it to the press.

I had a connect box for a short but gave it up because of the satellite channels, I hoped it might have been similar to the early Walker combi box with sat for free on it. On the positive side, the UI for Saorview was quite good, epg, rollback, pity VM weren't on board, Spotlight, it would be great if that were still available on other brands.

After seeing this post, I've taken the Connect box out of the press

After the 3rd factory reset it seems to be holding (not rebooting), so I'll see how it goes.

i was in a neighbours house last night and his connect box is still been used. He uses a stick for apps. Where did it go wrong for this box if it had something like the play store were you could add the likes of Disney and netflix it would have been a winner i think. Why did they throw the towel in on it so quick?

It's not the only saorview thing that they lost interest in, remember Mpeg5 "digital aertel"? They told everyone not to buy an unapproved Box/TV as we'd miss out on digital aertel, then they forget it existed and shut it down along with the original aertel.

Even morso (than RTE) for other broadcaster on Saorview, VM , where many of the shows VM broadcasts can be seen in much better picture quality on UK channels on a Saorview/FTA sat combination.

However this must be least of VM and RTE's worries nowadays, where it seems every second home has a dodgy stick/dodgy box, so obviously a loss of audience for Irish channels by the users having a vast number of other channels, especially including premium sports/movies etc, for a low cost, and dodgy-sticks also indirectly fuels increased "evasion" of the TV licence, which funds Irish TV broadcasters (not just RTE).

In towns nowadays I often see Sat dishes now left in an obvious state of disrepair (LNBs coming loose etc) and I bet the majority of this is due to dodgysticks being used instead rather than any legitimate streaming services

On the issue of UK epg on Saorview connect boxes, the original Walker box had what was called "Sat Free", it had 7 day epg etc but Walker could not use Freesat branding for legal reasons. I have an older LG tv and I can get Saorview and Freesat on it but I cant get both, in a workable order, on my newer LG tv.

In regards to VM, a friend recently got Sky stream and was surprised that ITV1 was not available, the competition issue didn't justify the situation, as far as he was concerned, VM, I think, would see it as a black and white issue.

On my Sony TV there is a generic satellite tuner, no Freesat branding/software, so I can get Saorview, Freeview, UK FTA satellite and any other satellites FTA channels all in one EPG. Only the UK satellite channels have now/next, but the European stuff on 19.2E along with Saorview and Freeview have their 7 day listings.

Saorview Connect box all still working

    Serial link on Saorview

    Spotlight

    RTE and TG4 players

7 day play back on RTE and TG4 channels.

    Now/next satellite

    Recording

The issue I believe is that the software on the box just isn't strong enough to handle the above.

Sadly the box is prone to needing a reboot regularly.
