    And miss all the fun?

I watched them all a few times just to let the magic soak in. Was like sitting down to watch the Godfather Trilogy in terms of filmography, suspense and drama

I had an inspection today. Weighing cows and calves and cross referencing them off my previous weights inputted. They were then checking for genotype tags in the right animals. I have to say the inspector was fair and it wasn’t near as stressful as I was expecting.

was it long after you inputted the weights you were notified of the inspection?

some cows were back between 20-30kg and some had put on about the same. Calves across the board done a minimum of 1.5kg per day so I was happy with that and that includes two sets of twins.

Did the SCEP online training. An hour of my life gone. I can see a lot older operators not being IT savy through no fault of theirs and not having this training completed by 01st Nov.

I actually have to complement DAFM on putting in training that suits farmers lifestyles and especially suckler farmers. It was probably the 1st large-scale online training that farmers had to engage with and for the majority, it was painless, being able to do it at your own time and own place. The killer up to now has been having to take time off work, to sit in room with many others who would rather be elsewhere. If there is more training that is aligned to schemes we should be singing for it to be online. The % that are not online or can't get access with a family, friend or neighbour is small. You have to look at the proliferation or online marts now

I attended Acres training recently, a full day away. So online suits a lot especially part time farmers. Personally I think they are just having training for the sake of some training. And then having little maths exams thrown into it aswell. Trump got elected in 2016 and one of his selling points was he was going to remove mobile phones and give people shovels. Here it seems to be removing the shovel and here is a mobile phone and your paying for the phone.

Did most of the SCEP online training today. 6 of the 7 modules completed. God, it's gruelling. I now know what Good Mothering ability is - licking the calf after birth and letting the calf drink.

Closing date for this training is 15th November 2024.

I skipped all the videos to the end and just did the quiz on it

That is the name of the game. Questions are repetitive if you fail the exam just restart it remembering incorrect answers after a couple of attempts you will get it right.

It's similar to a lot of online training many have to cope with in there jobs it's a box ticking excersise

Just submit them anyway. Be grand. I've to do mine later when kids in bed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,056 ✭✭✭tellmeabit

Do you get a penalty and if entered get it again later

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 261 ✭✭Omallep2

Don't know if I get.your question? U mean double penalty?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,056 ✭✭✭tellmeabit

No sorry, penalised of not all data there and later they make the payment covering what you were penalised if you corrections. Did the calving data etc for an elder neighbour last year and looks like that is what happened for him

Just got a call today from a department official, have to organise scales and reweigh cattle with him present. ASome cows heavy incalf now, some culled and weanlings sold. Anyone any experience of this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,220 ✭✭✭Who2

the weanlings that are sold are grand that’s to be expected as are the culled ones. You are as well print off the previous weights so you have a rough idea what they were in at. There is a tolerance they work by and I was told mine was 30kg approx from initial weighing to second weighing on the cows. The weanlings they will have worked out what weight they should be at .

It’s not too bad in fairness I’d a couple of cows that wouldn’t stay on the scales the first time around and the weight was guessed to be honest and I just put my hands up and the inspector was grand about it.

I had to re-weigh mine the back end of last year too. Had the cattle in for a herd test a week before I got the notification. Had them all left off in outside bits I'd only use for silage normally and the lad that was to call was trying to strong-arm me into doing them straight away. Threatened to have my payment cut if they weren't done with-in the fortnight. There was a stand-off for about 6 weeks and once they were back in the main block I had them done.

In fairness he was pleasant enough when he did call and even recorded a weights of a pen of stores for me while he was there.

One other thing that he checked was tags on the calves. I am in the NGP and 6 or 7 of the calves would have had button tags for tags I had in stock. He checked that those calves had the 3 tags. Some of them would have been born after July so not SCEP eligible for last year. He went down the fields to check those few to make sure too.

    Hi,

Can the cattle weights be recorded in herdwatch or do they have to be entered on the ICBF site?

I assumed herdwatch would be connected to ICBF but on ICBF it asks who the agent you used or serial number of scales or something while on herdwatch app it doesn't ask any of that.

Maybe the weighing on herdwatch app is only for personal tracking and not for the SCEP?
