Burns is not of sufficient quality for a Province with the ambitions of Munster.

He was at the crux of the malaise era in Ulster of late, and no sign that he has been rejuvenated by this move.

    A terrible bit of business.

    Munster!!

Casey is down. They shovel the ball on to a forward. BB again. And nobody goes into halfback to resource the ruck??

    Penalty Connacht!

Excellent by Coombes to prevent Connacht taking a fully deserved lead.

He's the backup 10 - who do you think would be of sufficient quality for that role?

Serious line and offload from O'Donoghue. Santi wanted none of that tackle on Coombes.

Every time I see Butler I think he looks a nice player too with a lovely whipped pass. Maybe if Burns is hurt it’ll mean a few starts for Butler over the next few weeks.

Well I suspect he'll be available for next season so Munster can make a move. I think Burns has played at a higher level than Harry Byrne to this point though.

Tony hasn't exactly given an exhibition in defence since coming on. Lovely player going forward though and not afraid to try things.

Experience would be good for him personally but can't help but hope that Crowley is given the greenlight soon.

Mike Haley has been excellent tonight in all aspects - that pass there was beautiful.

Game of the season contender here.

Hairy enough, thought Connacht probably deserved more than 2 points. But I guess you take the TBP win. Need to improve on defence but encouraging enough signs in attack, particurly Nanks and Farrell.

Mad, mad game. Brilliant atmosphere in Thomond. To use a cliche, it was a game neither side deserved to lose.

Plenty to work on for both sides, but a lot of good too. Great stuff for the first game of the season.

Not entirely convinced either side much deserved a BP win either though.

Very entertaining all the same. Munster were able to ratchet up the pressure when they needed to but there were a lot of soft enough scores out there for both teams.

Yeah, defence seemed to be very optional tonight.

Atmosphere was great in Thomond for the last 30. Very enjoyable

    Scrum did well enough

    Hopefully lineout was just rustiness

    Happy with the centres showing,

The off loading in the 2nd half was excellent not afraid to play when needed.

Burns, fine off the Tee, 2 bad misses to touch, will hold judgement til post Xmas I feel.

Casey will definitely feel he was in a game when wakes 2mor

Well that game was interesting... I pity the reporters on Monday morning trying to make sense of it

You sure about that? The likes of james o leary train there albeit probably on off weeks for school and the summer

Really enjoyed that one. Some thoughts:

    1. Cracking game of rugby, and a good atmosphere in lovely conditions. Connacht will feel they left that one behind, but very enjoyable all round.
    2. That said, Munster's error count just way too high. We shored up the early lineout issues, but other errors continued all game.
    3. Nank deserved MOTM, but Haley equally could've gotten it imo. Both had a fine game, just excellent all day.
    4. Casey was excellent, the poor bit of defending for Ioane's try aside. Was really in the wars as well, and made some excellent snipes. Clear yellow for Cordero for me, but thought it should've been looked at as a possible penalty try, not sure there was cover in behind.
    5. Tom Farrell had a bit of a mixed bag. Some brilliant stuff in attack but 1 or 2 mistakes defensively, biting in.
    6. Shane Daly is just routinely solid for us a this point, especially defensively but had some nices breaks for us as well today, like line-break off a set moved on 2nd phase in the 2nd half.
    7. Burns didn't have a great game by any means (the 2 kicks to touch, but he threw 2 hospital passes to Barron and Coombes as well) but you'd have to hope the injury isn't too bad. I wouldn't like to have to rely on Tony Butler and probably Rory Scannell until Crowley is available. Butler with a couple of costly missed tackles, but he'll learn from it.
    8. Thought Ruadhán Quinn was disappointing, was hoping for more from him.
    9. From a Connacht perspective, Josh Murphy had a fine game on both sides of the ball.
    10. Feels like I need a 10th point to round it out so…. welcome back Jean Kleyn.

Loved that game, 10 tries, 9 conversions and only one attempt at kicking a penalty. Both sides will be annoyed at their defence but some nice running rugby at times too.

New centre partnership, new halfback pairing and we score 5 tries, not to be sneezed at, at all.

We start the season with similar errors we had in the warm up games but I'll take a BP win in an InterPro anytime.

My thinking is that Butler could well be, but bringing Burns in will do little else but stall his (and someone like Hicks, albeit to a lesser extent) development. Obviously the squad is looking a little light on experience at 10 so it might make sense to bring in an older hand to guide the others in their development, i just don't think BB is of a high enough quality for that

A better player won't agree to be second fiddle to Crowley. Burns is the perfect back up. If Butler is good enough then he'll overtake Burns.

Should be looking at wins vs Zebre and Ospreys now, before the Leinster game and trip to SA. Think it's the first time since the SA teams have been added that we have them this early in the season?

Thought Abrahams was quiet, didn't really get into the game much. Decent kick or 2, mixed bag with his tackling, but on that evidence are we expecting the 1st choice back 3 to remain Daly, Nash and Haley? Or where does Kilgallen come into it when back from injury?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,859 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

Take nothing for granted! We could very easily lose to Zebre and Ospreys if we don't wake up after the way we played on Saturday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 26,511 ✭✭✭✭phog

I don't know if Burns is the man but we definitely needed someone of his experience now that Crowley is the starting Irish 10. It's only a one year contract too for Burns so worth the punt.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 13,223 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

Connacht are a far better team than either Zebre or Ospreys. We should be looking at 10 points while reintegrating the rest of the internationals over the two games.

Thought Abrahams was quiet, didn't really get into the game much

The spoiling at ruck time didn't help fast ball so he probably suffered a bit by that, when Casey upped the tempo with with quick tap free kicks then we cut them open. Daly had a few good hits in defence, especially when we were trying to pen Connacht back in their own half late in the game. Hard to see Nash and/or Haley losing out so a few players are probably vying for the one spot

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,269 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

Daly's just so good defensively; once or twice (and in particular one late on around the 75th minute) he just shut down a 1-on-1, it slowed the attack and stopped all of Connacht's momentum. He's just so good at that, and on scramble. More than solid at the ruck too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 26,511 ✭✭✭✭phog

He gave away one penalty for crawling through a ruck in an attempt to counter ruck but other than that his defence was brilliant. He is great at presenting a ball for quick ball after being tackled to the ground.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,658 ✭✭✭sprucemoose

as much as i agree that if hes good enough he'll overtake BB, it will be very hard for him to do that if hes barely getting any gametime.
