Ive never dealt with PrepayPower. Seems you need to give one months notice to terminate the contract & you’d have to have the meter removed. Otherwise, there are extra charges (€50 meter removal & possible a call out charge) if you dont give notice. They may send you out a 60digit code (yes, you read right,) to change the meter status.

Best is to calculate your annual consumption and compare with the lowest rate out there. Then you can see the potential savings. If its significant you can show that it'll cost x amount of € extra to remain with prepay. If significant, it will be a no-brainer to switch, otherwise remain.

Generally, once you get the ball rolling with a cancellation it should be straightforward enough. But make sure to read the ts & cs. & schedule of charges. Be sure to give 1 months notice. And ring them to be sure of the process involved so there are no surprises.

Thanks, will check their consumption and work that out. The folks are convinced its the best value because they track their spend easier.

Based on average consumption and cost Prepay vs Energia (standard meter via Bonkers.ie) the difference is €607. Tracking spend is not much good if means throwing money away 😉

Just a word of caution regarding your last sentence, if the bill has been compiled and issued and it's for say €75 that €75 will be taken from your bank even if you made manual payments afterwards, the payments will go towards the next billing period. Just something to be aware of.

I add the credit before the bill is issued as Antfin stated and no direct debit

A general rule around direct debits.Ideal to donate e20 a week to the account to build up a credit against a bill.

Just got a call from the BGE loyalty dept offering me 24% discount (electricity only), original offer was 18%. Has anyone been offered more than this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,482 ✭✭✭Invincible

On previous page(mobile), The Driver said she was offered 25% this year.

Are you close to end of contract?

Only 18% shows on my account, ending 21/10.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,456 ✭✭✭Billy Mays

Contract is up on the 16th October.

I'll have a look at figures over the weekend to see what my best option is. Annual usage is arpund 3,000 units

I did get 25/25 via online account, didn't ring. I'm debating if I should cancel in cooling off period and switch

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 338 ✭✭marrm

Was on 39%, called them, they offered me the standard 24%. 🤨

Switched to Energia, BG offered me 25%. 😏

Staying with Energia (unless I get a good BG offer in the next 8 days). 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,346 ✭✭✭OfflerCrocGod

I switched to Energia to the 23.61 c/kWh electricity 24hr rate, €236.62 standing charge, (non smart as there was almost no advantage to a smart meter rate). BG were offering 27.85 c/kWh, €218.54 standing charge. The percentage discounts are wibble and wobble as they are utterly meaningless. We'd use 7k kWh so the rate dwarfs everything else and I'm gambling energy costs will come down slightly over the year (SSE are offering almost the same rate fixed for 12 months and it's the best rate available, I'd say that means they figure prices will weaken over the next 12 months).

BGE are taking the piss. On their public website, they list their offer for existing customers as 24% off electricity (or for dual fuel, 25% electricity and 20% gas).

But if you sign into your account, you'll get offered only 18% off electricity. And apparently, if you switch you'll get a so-called retention offer of … 24% off.

So, if you intend to stay with them, just use their website - not your account - to get 24% off. But you should probably switch anyway, there's almost certainly a better new customer offer for your usage from one of the other suppliers.

Im already with Flogas (out of contract), can I get this offer ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,353 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

You can if you're on a 24hr plan with a non smart meter or an unactivated smart meter, don't ring them just use the apply now button.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,482 ✭✭✭Zardoz

    Thanks.

I don't have an online account with Flogas, so just signed up for online account, I guess I need it, I don't see Apply Now button only Switch Now.

Doesn't seem to be much between the Certa tariff and the 24% Electricity Discount (Existing customer) plus 200 euro cashback, but I guess the former is fixed for the year whereas the latter will likely increase.

This is probbaly asked loads of times on this thread but couldn’t find it..

When should I switch? My BGE contract ends on October 1st, if I change before then do I risk paying an early termination fee?
went through most of the steps on the Energis website and wasn’t asked for a commencement date so imagine it happens immediately.

Yes, interesting the amount of fixed rate offers available.
    Prices are forecast to drop.

ESB will reduce price by 3% (5% smart meters) from Nov.
New network charges will likely raise Standing Charge from Oct onwards, potentially offsetting price drop.
ESB, wont be increasing their Stdg Charge however, (theirs is quite high as it stands anyhow).

Im holding off any descision until early Oct. If a lower fixed rate comes up, might go for that.

Energia is likely to be bought over. Likely within the next year. Be interesting to see if it will affect their prices in that event.

I had a smart meter fitted, but not activated, over a year ago. I'm on a 24hr standard plan and my contract finishes shortly. I now want a day/night non-smart plan. Is that possible on my current meter, or will I need to replace it for the old day/night meter?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,746 ✭✭✭rx8

I doubt you'll be able to go back to an old,non-smart, meter. They are currently installing the smart Day/Night one's.

Mine was swapped out during the year, but is not activated as I'm on a D/N plan with BGE.

You will need to contact your supplier, who will start the process with ESB networks.

No hassle at all, 2 mins signing up online and that was it.

In saying that I did get a call from Pre pay the next day and got €350 credit offer (started at €200) they are due to call me back today, if it goes to €400 i'd defo think about it. i'd still be losing €200 overall but to remain on prepay isn't that bad. So its food for thought

But I would recommend if they are adamant to stay and out of contract, do the sign up with anyone and you will then get a call from prepay and at least get them €350 added to their account

They're offering new customers 33% off Electricity now. I can never figure out why a new customer is more valuable than the ones you have to a business, unless most customers tend not to leave for a better deal.

vast majority of the public don’t change

I know people with electric Ireland for over 20 years and will never move

EI has 28% discount on contract renewals currently.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,564 ✭✭✭✭zell12

You are aware, prepay costs minimum €130pa extra compared to bill pay?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,786 ✭✭✭✭Muahahaha

Im still on the Flogas Community plan since renewing it in March. Decided to take a look at Bonkers to see if there is anything better out there as my contract hits the 6 month period. And the best there on Bonkers is SSE who are slightly higher than Im currently paying, they are almost 15 cents for the night rate while Im currently paying 12.5 cent. The standing charge is €309 which is also more than Im currently paying.

I see Energia also have a 38% off deal on but that is 26 cent day units and 12.4 cent night rates so basically the same as Im paying now. They had emailed me last week trying to get me to switch back to them but not much point for tiny savings.

So it doesnt look like I'll be switching out of that Flogas plan early, there are no real savings to be had right now from what I can see.

Electricity contract was up last week (non-activated smart meter).

A couple of weeks ago, I did my comparisons of what was on offer. At the time, flogas 24% discount with €200 cashback was the cheapest for me.

Went to switch this morning, and the flogas cashback offer is gone.

Cheapest for me now was EI 28% discount with €100 cashback - rates are 25.80c per unit (due to drop to 25.08c in Nov) and 250.77 SC. I found BGE, Energia and Flogas affinity rates would be cheaper, but it's the cashback that makes EI the cheapest for me for this year.

Switched gas last month, so that's the energy merry-go-round done for another year!

I know people with EI who accepted e50 to stay and were delighted with it.They couldn't be told anything different, not listening.
