Watched the original series in the 80s- it was pretty much aimed for kids - will this be any different?

It was aimed at family/older generation more than Kids, a soft detective series TBH. It looks like its just using the brand rather than re-booting the series. Looks like a good court room drama.

Was this crying out for a revival. I did watch the original many eons ago, but my recollection is that Ben Matlock was more PI than lawyer, and that his method of getting his clients off was to find out the identity of the real culprit, which took up more of the episodes than actual courtroom scenes, which largely composed of getting the said culprit on the stand and getting them to admit guilt. (Do they not have the rule against self-incrimination in this universe?)

Apparently, one plot device this is employing is that the Andy Griffith show exists, as a work of fiction, in universe, and the protagonist is at least aware of it and the fact that they share a last name, age brackets and career choice. I’m not sure there’s any other links between the two.

Objection! He stole that method from Perry Mason.

I see that both Matlock and the 1980s version of Perry Mason were done by a certain Dean Hargrove.

And that must be one of the most tenuous connections to an original series… unless deeper links emerge.

I think Dean Hargrove just rebooted Perry Mason in the late 80s and early 90s, could be wrong but …. checks internet … revived columbo around the same time but … he was also involved in the original era from the 1970s. Similar shows around the time from him include Jake and The Fatman … when they revive that series it will be called Jake - Stop Body Shaming Me.

    Ha ha- good one.

As a kid I watched Matlock but it wasn’t one of the greats like Columbo or Kojak - I remember it being a bit lame - total “family viewing” 😀

Now since we have a few oldies captive in this thread who remembers this courtroom based series? Didn’t last long as a series but again as a kid I do remember enjoying it :

Petrocelli - I see it’s a mid 70s show but it came to RTÉ or was it the BBC? In the very late 70s early 80s if I remember correctly ?

I know this could be asked about any reboot of a series more than a few decades old, but why not just make it its own thing. I've said before about reboots/remakes that by naming it after an existing series it's already got that weight around it. Now it has to prove itself worthy of the name among any fans (who are still living 😛). Or for those who disliked the original series, the name is tainted.

And yeah, I know they play the nostalgia and curiosity cards.

The problem with the 1980s detective series is that they really haven't stood the test of time, even the most repeatable Murder, She Wrote suffers from lack of plot and largely the same structure.

Act 1 : Murder and Victim have argument but who is going to be murdered? The victim everyone hates.

Act 2 : The most obnoxious or the most pleasant person is the main suspect. But our detective isn't quite sure.

Act 3 : Lots of talk with witnesses, "On the night of the murder you said you saw a handkerchief on the victims body?" now we have a clue!

Act 4 : The detective recounts and sums up "And that's why you couldn't bare to see the victim alive, and you framed Johnny here to make sure he was out of the picture, ISN'T THAT RIGHT?"

Act 5 : Queue lame joke

Also while Kathy Bates might talk about ageism in the new version both Murder, She Wrote and Matlock were both aware of the ageism that exists.

IMHO shows like Line Of Duty have been the death knell for lots of these under style detective shows where the detective she’s their thing, gathers everyone together at the end and names the murderer. The murderer then outlines in huge detail exactly why and how they did it.

Shows like LoD pretty much shows that even if they have video evidence, your best response is still “No comment”. I find now I can’t watch some of those older style shows anymore

Even US cop shows where a guy actually has a lawyer in tow to defend him look bad now as invariably the guy spills the beans against his lawyer’s advice. I know it’s a 42 minute show and you need to wrap up but I think audiences are getting more sophisticated.

Yeah if you look back quite a lot of times not just in those US shows but other media from the period such as Maigret ... without a confession the evidence wouldnt stand up to beyond reasonable doubt for a jury.

It seems that the Matlock series will be Kathy Bate's swan song.

Paramount+ if it doesn’t end up anywhere else, I guess.

I used to enjoy shows like Elementary and The Closer, but they often orchestrated overly elaborate ploys towards the end to get the person to confess, often to the point of ridiculousness. The Closer in particular seemed to employ a lot of cops who were also extremely skilled actors who'd act out a convincing play at the end to catch the killer. I do like Kathy Bates though. But if it's on P+ I won't be watching either way.....

    Watched the first episode.

Enjoyed it more than I expected.

Standard enough procedural but then the ending was an interesting enough twist to keep me watching

Next episode isn't until 17th Oct.

It wasn't ageism if she was the one deciding at the age of 76 that she was done.😛

How does she think Andy Griffith and Angela Lansbury* did it in their later years! Young people these days!

*they were about 60 when their respective series began.

I liked that opener, good twist but why the delay for the next episode

Seems this was to get a bump from another show. Think I saw it was the 60 Minutes season premiere. Apparently they did the same last year with Elsbeth.
