Getting ambiguous pricing for eye test with a medical card.

My doctor told me to have an eye test after doing badly on the alphabet board. I was advised by the Driving Licence crowd that I needed an OK from my doctor for a licence renewal as I'm 75. Went to a VERY well know optician firm and they said the test would be free. Then as they took my particulars, noting it was for a drivers licence, they claimed that this would be an extra Eu30. Can this be true?

The Treatment Benefit Scheme entitles you to a free eyesight test, once every 2 years. However, sight tests for VDUs and driving licences are not covered under the scheme.

The eyesight test for driving licences is more extensive, and not covered by the treatment benefit scheme

yes. Try another optician rather that spec savers. If you covered for PRSI, then a local optician might be more willing to fill out a form for you.

But if you have no history with them, they might charge too

Their pricing for eye tests is pretty clear, and indeed there is a specific reference to driving tests.

Eye tests for driving licence are not covered by the medical card. €30 is the general fee.
