You might have misunderstood me. The issue isn’t what RTE are doing, it’s that they were contractors along with all the benefits/obligations that entails. It’s shears been the case in my experience that contractors are, on spec, paid more than the regular ecocides but then they’re sharing it there own tax etc. You always, in my experience earth Jess as a wage on a permanent employment contract but that often confers with pension entitlements, healthcare etc. You’re also having your tax pays at source by your employer.

If the permanent terms don’t suit you, negotiate with your employer and don’t go to the papers. If you can’t arrive at an acceptable compromise it may be time to decline the contract offer and move on, you know, like everybody else does.

Oh my bad, I misread your post without my glasses 🤓

All the talk about "bogus self employment" amongst radio djs has been exclusively about RTE but it's the exact same practice in independent radio too, we know that Fergal D'Arcy and Phil Cawley were let go from Today Fm and given nothing after years on contracts, a quarter of a century in Phil Cawley's case

Bogus, the problem as I see it is that RTÉ didn't process the invoices correctly. In effect RTÉ were paying the contracts a monthly wage asking them to invoice each month by the same amount, rather than for work done.

I think Rory Coveney is looking for a new job, perhaps Jim Jennings might consider doing an audition. And word on his health?

It wouldn't surprise me if something like that happened and that RTE have been caught out here. Assuming the details in that article in The Sun are correct, this is an interesting turn of phrase: "All the presenters involved in the legal push back were found to be 2FM employees after a recent Department of Social Protection review."

I'm picking this completely out of my backside but I'd imagine people would be shocked if they released Lotties wage.

My gut feeling is that RTE are paying her peanuts.

I think people might be shocked if she was on €10k or on €100k.

According to one article RTÉ looked for 30% to 50% cuts on some wages if they were to become staff, that seems to be a very big cut.

Mark Cagney is on record for saying that TV3 got him to take a 30% cut, meaning his wage with the station was quite high, in fairness to Bob a 30% could only come in at about 120k with a 50% cut in at about 170k. But that's a hefty cut for anyone below 100k.

Cagney would have had a high profile when he start on TV3 as he'd be on Radio for a number years prior to that.

contractors need to look after their own taxes, pensions and holiday pay so sn employee will always get less in a headline figure.

Yes Cagney was high profile when he started with in 1999, though in fairness his popular years nationally were a good few years before this (his decade with Radio 2 up until 1989).

After that it was 98FM in Dublin only and the 1st year of Today FM.

Apart from being the station voice of Newstalk liners, what does he work at now ?

It is illegal for an Employer to cut an Employee's wages without their permission. This is where they maybe in trouble, Scope has already declared them as Employees. Now RTE is saying we want to pay you less because you are an Employee. They don't need to accept the pay cut and as RTE has secured nearly a 100k per year per employee from the State they don't have a chance of willing a WRC claim they cannot afford to keep paying the same wage.

It’s not illegal I’d say if the contract type is changing. Working in IT I’ve seen plenty of cases in the past where contract employees were offered permanent contracts and from talking to those employees they would have been slightly reluctant as it would have meant a drop in the headline pay figure. I’m sure once they factored in the contractor tax perks and a that they probably were falling down a bit. There are pros abd cons to both sides. Maybe if they converted a contract in €X to an equivalent permanent on €X also but now want to renegotiate to €X-30% then that’s definitely a problem. Mind you then whoever took the decision to do the original 1-1 contract teens needs to go.

The thing is, it has already been proven they are actually employees, who have often been in the same role for decades. The word is several of the 'new' employees have already lawyered up.

The quote in The Sun is "All the presenters involved in the legal push back were found to be 2FM employees after a recent Department of Social Protection review." Would the Dept of Social Protection be saying that if they didn't believe that was the case?

Kevin had already publicly said he will/has paid a substantial Exit Package to keep RTE out of the WRC.

Its interesting how the majority of the top 10 talent in RTÉ seems to be able to stay as contractors.

dave fanning on 2FM now, playing some songs you sadly no longer hear on 2FM. currently playing Matthews Southern Comfort "Woodstock"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,702 ✭✭✭Tork

2FM's target audience is 15-34 year olds. In other words, people born in the late 1980's and afterwards. While that Matthews Southern Comfort song is great, should it be aired on modern-day 2FM at all? It was released in 1970, before the parents of many of 2FM's current listeners were even born. It's the equivalent of 1980's 2FM playing Benny Goodman and Vera Lynn records. It goes back again to the point I'm forever making - there is no mainstream music station aimed at people of my generation. Arguably, Dave Fanning should've been playing these on RTE Gold today or on Radio 1.

There is a large number of this young age group discovering music from the 1960s to the 1980s

Dave Fanning is on Saturday evenings on RTE Gold and this a rare appearance for him on 2FM these days.

Dave has been on 2FM each Bank Holiday since his 2FM weekend shows finished 1.5 years ago, so technically he is still a 2FM presenter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,735 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

Dave can't quite let go of 2FM!

He is he last remaining connection to the original presenters from 1979 and, for that matter, the last left from the 1980s. In fact, correct me if I am wrong, but I think the next longest serving presenter is Mr. Spring from about the mid 1990s, and I think he might be the only presenter left that started with 2FM in the 1990s.

listening to tracy clifford they had some showbiz correspondant/person who wasn't lottie ryan. they have two doing this job or was it a holiday relief guy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,564 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Has Fergal D’Arcy disappeared from the 2FM schedules? I know he was only doing filler work mainly but I don’t think he’s been on in ages?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 603 ✭✭✭Shan Doras

The June Bank holiday weekend was the last time he was on filling-in. The fact that he was completely overlooked for their "summer schedule" wasn't a good sign, I would have thought he'd have been a good fit to take over from the two Johnnies

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,149 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Interesting to see no changes made in September for the new season, so their summer schedule isn't a summer schedule of just 5 weeks.
