Picked up new sticks during the week. Traded in my Mizunos for Srixon ZX5's and had a voucher from xmas to soften the blow. Looking forward to giving them a spin at the weekend.

Excellent clubs. I treated myself to those despite thinking I wouldn't be able to hit them. I was growing out of my GI irons and wanted something a little more sexy-looking and perhaps something I would grow into but they've been grand for me so far.

    You will love them!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,932 ✭✭✭coillcam

They're definitely easier to hit and the heavier shaft feels more balanced too. The short irons have a towering ball flight based on the few range balls I've hit so far. Got a deal on the matching 3i ZX utility too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 204 ✭✭soverybored1878

Yeah they are. I got fitted and ended up with Elevate 95 shafts because my old iron shafts were light and I liked the feel. Heavier shafts can fatigue me toward the end of a round as well. The elevate shafts absolutely launch and I've barely lost any distance with the irons despite them being weaker lofted than my old irons.

I also went for the 20 degree driving iron. Was a complete experiment but off the tee it is so reliable and easy to hit, love it. It's knocked my hybrid out the bag, always been a bit unreliable for me anyway.

I'm back to golf after 6 or 7 year break. My driver and 3-wood are about 20 years old, driver is an R7. I'm thinking of buying new driver in McGuirks Leopardstown. Any recommendations for (should be) high single figure handicap for a new driver, currently 13? Have read loads of online reviews, wondering I'd people generally gonfor stock shafts? Back in the day I went to foregolf for a fitting.

Anyone have an Apple Watch Series 9 that they use for Golf GPS?

If so, how does the battery fare?

My series 5 is no longer surviving 18 holes so curious about upgrade options.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 277 ✭✭Sorbet

not a direct answer to your question but I have a Apple Watch SE 2nd generation which is older than series 9 and no problems with battery and 18 holes. Have used Golfshot and Arccos and Arccos heavier but stilll no problem battery wise. Hope that helps.

Had a bit of a “Eureka” moment at the range tonight. Was going back through the few things I had to work on from my last lesson and wondering why my irons were ok but woods terrible - then it dawned on me, I was swinging the exact same for woods and irons. Bit of a reset and bang, was nailing my drives. Tried to start a new pre-shot routine to try remember what to do to change swing for driver and irons, something that won’t take too much time but will get my head right. Fingers crossed.

scratch that, had a disaster in captain qualifier today. Raging.
Wind was extremely tough and it lashed rain a few times but I had one shocking shot on nearly every hole. If I lost a ball off the tee, then I would par the second one, hit a few second shots in to trouble but then nailed the next shot after the drop. So frustrating. Only good thing was my short game and putting was nearly the best it’s been all year

I had some concerns on the durability of a range eureka moment!

I'm noticing a very poor trend in my home club along this lines. I found the greenside bunker on the 1st hole in this condition when I arrived there on Saturday morning. Was out reasonably early, would have been about 10 groups, of 3 balls in front of us, so 30 members of the course.

I've seen it almost on a weekly basis at this point.

I just dont get the laziness/ignorance of leaving a bunker in this condition.

I've found myself in footprints multiple times this year.

Are people just plain selfish and ignorant, or just oblivious.

Fcuk me thats shocking! I take it your letting the Pro know. I find (as my place sometimes can be bad) but not to that extent. It can be society's

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,971 ✭✭✭spacecoyote

No societies out in my place over a weekend, so no excuses for members, just pig ignorance.

Have said it to multiple people, and I'm not the only one.

The weekend of the Presidents Prize, the president sent an email. The usual stuff around format, good luck, etc... but he made a specific point in the message telling people to maintain and rake bunkers on the course.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,465 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

It's really bad in our place as well. Unraked bunkers and people not repairing divots. And its definitely not just non-members, a lot of people just don't seem to bother at times.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 18,199 Mod ✭✭✭✭slave1

    Avoid bunkers 😂

….there are people/golfers out there that just don't give a sh1t, simple as that, I don't have the back to be repairing as many pitch marks as I end up doing time after time

bit late, but I use hole19 and Apple Watch and never an issue, I’d get the rest of the day too after an average 4-4.5 hour morning comp round and wearing it overnight for the alarm, but I’d charge before going to bed. Only time I’ve run out is if playing an evening round and have done a morning workout of some type, they kill the battery.

I’d be waiting a week of for the series 10/X announcement which will prob be the same price with bigger screen.

I'm a member in the same club as yourself and have found the bunkers to be quite bad at times over the summer. It's not even lazy raking, there is no effort to rake the bunkers at all. I played earlyish on Saturday and found a number of bunkers already in a bad way. It's not just at the weekends either, I play some Friday mornings and its the same.

Yeah, it's frustrating. They invested significant money over the last number of years to re-do all the bunkers on the course and they're I'm good shape and have decent sand in them.

Couldn't even have guys use the excuse of practicing in them given they've built two practice bunkers in the practice area, so no real excuses.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,743 ✭✭✭dan_ep82

Drives me insane when you can see the foot prints leading to the strike mark in the sand go right past the rake and usually back the other side of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 374 ✭✭GolfPar

I think in a lot of Clubs they don't have the time or resources to rake all the bunkers on a Saturday or Sunday morning before play begins. This probably requires a dedicated member of staff which they aren't willing to pay. Normally the focus will be on cutting greens or changing pin positions.

The condition of bunkers is something that in general has gotten worse in recent years. I can only put it down to people being lazy or with the influx of people new to the game as well that they are simply unaware of the etiquette expected.

Got a rangefinder from Temu a couple of months ago for the princely sum of €44! I would never have bothered with one before as I very rarely get to play outside my home club and didn't think the price of buying one would be worth it. I would normally have relied on the gps watch of one of the phone apps but since I got it I've been using it almost all the time. A friend of mine has a €300 Bushnell model and the one I have measures virtually the same distances every time. I thought it would have been awkward and slowed my play up a bit but this hasn't been the case. Just get the measurement done while others are taking their shots unless I'm away first.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,225 ✭✭✭benny79

I bought one of temu myself. Probably the same one. It vibrates when it captures the flag but I did notice sometimes it would pick up trees or that behind. So you have to be careful.. I would have rough idea sap twice and just check my GPS as I grab club. mainly only on holes with trees or hills behind but I love it carry it in my pocket too as its small. I think it has really help my game. I am consider buying a dearer model ie a bushnell as I presume these would pick up the flag quicker or maybe not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,932 ✭✭✭coillcam

I've a bushnell. It's not immune to missing flags and catching trees in the background. Sometimes it's the type of pin or flag on a course.

I've seen these prisms or devices for flagpoles that "catch" the laser much better. Not too expensive and would be helpful for many courses.

Bunkers should be rebuilt every decade or so but obviously there is cost involved, heavy rain and poor surrounding/planned drainage can destroy neat bunkers real quick. Again (a cost issue) groundskeeping should be raking bunkers every morning prior to play but that rarely happens for understandable reasons

What's the best way to clean my clubs?

A few of my wedges have a few tiny spots of rust thanks to me forgetting to take them out of the car after a wet round so wouldn't mind getting that off either.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 18,199 Mod ✭✭✭✭slave1

Just leave in soapy hot water for a few minutes and bit of elbow grease with a plastic scouring pad, then hardened groove cleaner very carefully. BTW, clubs should not rust unless getting very old (apart from the deliberately rusty wedges)

Please don't soak woods/driver/hybrids as you won't want water getting in behind the head and left against the metal. Some putters also are hollow in parts, so same applies. Recipe for disaster but do clean and brush them down. Would also caution against submerging shafts.

Irons and wedges are fine tbf. If you want remove rust spots on wedges, a little wd40 for a few mins should loosen it all and a firm brush will get rid of the rest (just make sure its not one for cutlery etc).

I do most of my cleaning on course and it saves 95% of the effort. I only clean with soap at home every 2 months and play every weekend. The brush I use comes with a little water reservoir. So it's a simple task of squirting the club face, brushing it and wiping clean. You'll have no build-up of sand or dirt which means less damage to balls and clubs over time also.

The brush I have is this one and well worth it. Although you can probably get a knock off version from the usual chinese websites.
