Its not a bad lock. My new hobby is lockpicking so I'll always take an interest in any locks mentioned on boards.

Provided you have enough meat in the locking system to prevent the lock being attacked with bolt cutters you've done about as much as you can. Very few thieves if any will look at a lock in terms of how easy it is to pick (unless its stupid easy).

If you lost the key and called out a locksmith they would just cut it off with an angle grinder ;-)

Lock picking as a hobby ?!?!

It's for a teenagers bike that is cheap enough, not sure that type of bike is targeted often.

a sturdy U-lock is fine for a cheapish run-around bike - there's so many nice bikes locked up with crap cable locks, bike thieves will generally go for whatever is the quickest to remove. Crap-looking bike with a half decent lock is as theft proof as you can get, just make sure to lock up next to a better looking bike with a worse lock.

personally I wouldn't lock a decent bike on the street in Dublin with any type of lock; even if the lock is really resistant to attack you run the risk that some gurrier will have a go anyway and damage the bike in the process (or just steal your components).

Just a note on the Xiaomi Poco C range. They are the absolute bottom of the pile spec wise. I would say a very slow phone with very slow memory. The price is attractive for a 8gb/256gb model but unless you are looking for a very basic slow moving handset I would avoid the C range. Pocos go from C up to M to X to F models for higher spec. Id advise to try for 6gb/128gb model and move up to M / X or a Redmi if budget allows.

@Seattle I'd be surprised if it would take that long for the phone to be delivered. The other thread is a no chat thread. It's decent value for a budget phone and you can check the specs on Kilmovil.

Thanks. It's just when I initiate an order, it gives a delivery date of mid October which I found a bit odd.

I'd hope it wouldn't take that long but there's no guarantee I suppose.

The famous D lock was due to arrive yesterday...is now Monday.

I doubt that somehow unless you're comparing it to an iPhone 17

If i recall the antutu was about 240

Those fones are fine for general use. Looks like the res might be low and 5G? , it has NFC

It's those things I'd be checking on cheaper fones

Just making sure people are aware of what they are buying. Its a bargain if you dont care about the lower spec. The screen is abysmal and it has the same cpu as a redmi 9 from 4.5 years ago.

my wife has a xiaomi redmi (note 12) and it’ll be the last xiaomi phone we buy.. constant issues with it, from alarms not going off, to frequent and now consistent issues with any form of online purchase that requires verification

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,375 ✭✭✭jj880

We have 6 Xiaomis between us, my parents and my wife's parents. Never a days bother. No problem with revolut, EBS and BOI apps. Great value for money. Closest we have to your wife's would be redmi note 11 pro 5g. Honestly I think if you can you should get it replaced. Sounds like you have a dud. Is it under warranty?

The problem I've found with the cheap android phones is that if they get a new version of Android they get noticeably slower.

I had a Redmi Note 10 for the last 3 years, it's was fine with the Android 11 it shipped with, but by the time it got Android 13 it was dog slow and it won't get any further updates. It was possibly better a few years ago when the cheap phones never got any updates!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,375 ✭✭✭jj880

Same with any android device though. When you buy you are buying for the next 3+ years of app / OS updates. Cheaper brand or not - always try and get a better spec than what you need for right now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,590 ✭✭✭✭loyatemu

Samsung, Google and some others are now offering 5+ years of updates - whether those updates will make the phone unusably slow, IDK.

Re. the Internet radio posted. If I have a smart speaker already, does a standalone Internet radio offer anything different or extra?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,242 ✭✭✭The Continental Op

You can think of it as a smart speaker with the internet built in. It has bluetooth so it is a smart speaker but its also got internet radio, podcasts, FM radio and alarm.

Nothing you can't do with a phone or tablet and a smart speaker. The convenience is just setting it up and not moving it. I have one as a bedside "radio" - also has the time on the display. I'm getting a second for out in a workshop that has a WiFi signal.

On the USB-C charger front, IKEA's new SJÖSS chargers are pretty unbeatable.

    30W single port for €7

    45W dual port for €13

Reviews agree. It's cheap for a reason. What would you recommend?

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 8,299 Mod ✭✭✭✭Jonathan

Yes, both have CE certification, which is more than most of the cheap chargers on Amazon. The Belkin charger linked to by @The Continental Op did have CE certification though.

Convenience I guess. The drawback to them is a degree of built-in obsolescence (similar can be said for smart TVs). Unless the software is kept updated, which is unlikely, over time services will stop working with it. This was an issue with the BBC a couple of years ago if memory serves. Of course if it has BlueTooth, then it can always serve as a speaker as fallback.

I'd have more confidence in something sold by Ikea not burning the house down that some "Chinese Export" tat from Amazon

Can someone tell me if this Pure speaker can access BBC internet services from Ireland? My old Logitech lost access last year and workarounds are tricky. FWIW I'm not asking about DAB.

I wake up to BBC Radio 4 on the Pure Connect + each morning. All of the BBC Radio channels and podcasts are available.

I was looking for a cheap charger that didn't have a 99% chance being a chinese copy the Belkin will probably be chinese but at least built to their specification. If I hadn't have ordered it myself I wouldn't have posted it. If I could get the Ikea ones easily I would buy a few as they look a good option and bigclive has done some very positive reviews of Ikea USB chargers in the past.
