My review, I hope you like it, will probably have a ton typos I'll need to sort. :)

Before I move over full time to the 25 thread here is my review of EP 24.

As you know I felt the line up was weaker this year than most other years especially the mid tier, I recognise the headliners are generally not for me at this stage, but I had a list of bands happy to see with a pint in my hand and a short list of must sees.

On the train down got chatting to a girl from Donegal who told me that her friends had gone down the night before and that their drink had been robbed. They knew who did it but when they went to his tent neither he nor the drink was there so they unpegged his tent and hid it. So glad my brother in law lives in Portlaoise and i dont have to camp.

    FRIDAY

My weekend started at Salty with Peer Pressure, a bunch of bare chested lads with loud guitars that looked like they were having the time of their lives. Met @darzog and @CoffeeImpala which added to the feel good factor (our paths would cross many times over the next few days). On then to Trailer Park for Dubh Lee who I saw a few years ago at night and day. She has a lovely voice and some very nice tunes however she was covering the RHCPs Californication album and while ok would have preferred her own stuff. Ran into @Kepler21 @desk tidy and @rubick so good to see a few of the boardsies still hanging in there. Caught a few tunes from Roisin El Cherif in Croi, nice voice, before the official start with TCM on Salty. I thought they were really good with a great crowd. The new singer has really grown into the role and I think he is better than his predecessor. @Navan Man01 recognised my t-shirt and introduced himself, another sound lad. Back to TP for Lost Apollo who I thought were very impressive, she has a great voice with some very enjoyable tunes. Trenchtown for the Bionic Rats next who were not as good as last year. Went to the bar by the main stage to catch a bit of SEB, caught Murder on the Dance Floor and Like a Prayer (was right to have on my playlist). She seemed like a bit of fun and the crowd were up for it. Then to the first of my 3 must sees on Friday, Newdad. Thought they were excellent, good crowd and the bonus of a Just Like Heaven cover. Caught a bit of Fangclub who sounded good before a bit of Mik Pyro. Not a fan of Republic of Loose so didn't go to see him last year but @Seathrun66 had talked him up so toddled along. Had a full band with him and he was really good so made a note to catch him fully on Saturday. May Kay joined him for a song, is there anyone she hasn't collaborated with at this stage? Then too my second must see Faithless. Was wondering what they would be like without Maxi and have to say I thought they were great and had the crowd in their hands for the full set. Really nice touch having Maxis image and voice for some songs, my gig of the weekend. Went to Kelly Anne Byrne but after Faithless she just wasn't doing it for me. Finished up with Melts, my last must see of the day, who I thought started slowly but really picked it up and put on a great gig in the end. The lead singer and @rubick had a hug and I reckon the lead singer is still telling everyone he got to hug the legend that is rubik. Had a good bop with darzog, rubick and @Penfailed. Headed for home after this with the bus dropping me off 20 seconds from brother in laws house, what a service.

    SATURDAY

For me this was largely a day of new bands which is indicative of the line up from my perspective. Started with Winemom, easy listening nothing special though I did wonder which of the band member's mother had inspired the name. On then to the Clockworks who I really enjoyed. For me have bits of Fontaines and Murder Capital and the lead singer carries himself like Ian McCulloch of EATB. Think it was this gig I met @HarryTheSpider for the first of many times across the day. Some good chats about the lineup were had. Off to the Clifford's, The lead singer has a brilliant voice and was an enjoyable gig. My next two Cherym and the Big Sleep were filler for me as they were the best of what available and neither did it for me and only lasted a few songs at each. This was followed by the Cardinals who I enjoyed, thanks @Seathrun66 for the recommendation. Went to see Aoife Nilz and the Destruction and had a laugh when one of the singers forgot mics were on and shouted where were you dic*head you are fu*ckin late at the guitarist as he ran in. Band were a nice bit of noise with interesting cover of 99 red balloons. First proper visit to the main stage to see Kasabian who I had not seen since Tom left. Really enjoyed the gig great set list and got the crowd around me going. Apparently though based on subsequent conversations I had with some ladies I got it all wrong listening to the music as should have been admiring Serge's outfit that was unreal???? From one must see to another as I headed to The Waterboys who for some reason I had never seen live. They gave Faithless a run for their money as my gig of the weekend. Thought they were immense, great crowd atmosphere and what a finish with Whole of the Moon and Fisherman's Blues. Kept my promise to myself and caught Mik Pyro in Fishtown. Hadn't listened to him that much but enjoyed the gig, he has some voice and the band were very good. No May Kay this time but Stefan Murphy joined him. Finished the day with The Bonnevilles who make some sound for just two guys. Thanks @Penfailed for the recommendation and you deserved the shoutout from the band

    SUNDAY

2024 has not been a great year for me in terms of exercise and the legs were feeling it but Orchard Thieves has great restorative powers (BTW Orchard Thieves Wild is awful). Sunday started with a must see The Stranglers who were brilliant. A warm sunny day, pint in hand, a decent crowd and @thebusher for company with some classic tunes, it doesn't get much better than this. Bushers friend who was there for the first time and sounded like a kid in a sweet shop made me wonder has going for so long made me forget how wonderful it is? From there to one of my finds of the weekend. Spiritual Cramp a guitar laden Californian band that gave their all. Will definitely be listening to them again. From one American to another but different genre with Darnell Cole and the Vibes. Some great blues guitar with good tunes, and merch on sale which was unusual. Over to TP for some reggae (very diverse range of music for me starting Sunday) with the Light runners, small enough crowd until they started the Marley tunes and steadily grew after that. Good fun and definitely won't forget the reggae version of Ride On. Continuing my diverse mix went to Rankins for Artemas who has exploded recently. Much smaller crowd than I expected but clash with the WT explained it. He had a guitarist and drummer which I didn't expect and thought as a result he was better than anticipated but needs to work on his stage presence. Then to Survivor for a bit of Karma Police with intentions of heading to my must see CMAT, however they were so good and crowd so into it could not drag myself away. Without a doubt the best cover band I have ever seen, note and sound perfect. Over to Mindfield to fill a gap watching Zombie (Cranberries cover band) great atmosphere before heading to Kylie. Was delayed getting there as I reunited a young Spanish lad with his lost Airpods, he had smartly put his phone number on the case. Caught about 30 mins of Kylie and that was enough to say saw her heard some tunes I knew and that she was OK live. Caught the end of The Year Grunge Broke with a bit of Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana. Had the place hopping and seemed like good fun. Finished my picnic with A Whole Lotta Zepp who were alright.

    Pros

    Some great music heard

Great company across the weekend from here

Being told by a girl I looked no more than 39 (I am 52)

    Good weather

    No trouble seen

    Cons

Having to go to many cover bands and filler as options poor at times

Toilets were a disgrace, as was rubbish

New installations has reduced space so felt packed a lot of the time

People with too much drink, see story about my age above

Sister of girl above asking how much botox have I had.

Overall a good weekend but well down on my list of best EPs.

Was intending not to buy a ticket for next year until saw line up but my son got serious FOMO and is going next year and said he would love me to be at it as well so 2 tickets bought yesterday.

    See you in 2025

Can't believe Orchard Thieves Wild is even worse than the original sickly sweet piss. Thought it was supposed to be less sweet and therefore palatable? Although it is 0.5% less strong. Still, Belvin loves it and that's all that matters.

Found the Wolf Tones to be best act of the weekend with the crowd absolutely engaging and bopping up and town. Was an incredible experience, Nas and faithless fantastic too.

Great review Mucker. Lovely story about the blind girl thinking you were 39.

Superb review @Mucker46 . Feel like I lived the weekend vicariously through you as I’d have happily followed you around all weekend with your choices of acts. Though I’d have broken away for Nas and CMAT. If they continue the trend of booking Irish acts on consecutive years and moving them to the main stage then I think we could see Kneecap and CMAT there in 2025.

Hope to see you at a gig soon man. In Dublin for Ride and the Libertines next month if you’re about.

Shocking that it replaced Lagunitas. Pretty sure it sold well in 2023 as there was none left at the Croi bar anyway Sunday night. I can't remember the last festival in the probably 40+ different one's I've been to that that didn't have any sort of 'craft' option/ IPA, etc. I went from consuming probably 20+ pints over the weekend there to probably 6 due to the bland choice, I wonder did many others do the same. I suppose my bank account was better off, but definitely a big issue, used to sell Cute Hoor Pale Ale at it years ago too along with other Lagunitas brands. Also having two stouts and nothing in the IPA/Pale Ale category was unusual too.

Anyone catch Channel Tres, in Rankins wood subbin to the Scratch Saturday night? A hugely popular artist that I hadn’t heard of before EP. performed with Jungle on “I’ve been in love”

Reminds me of Pharrell Williams in his voice and style.

Slick operation, vocal a little weak but really punchy live sounds vs his recorded stuff.

Yes, one of the highlights of the weekend for me, thought he was great - even gave me a shout out for my colourful jacket 😎

Had listened to him a bit beforehand, thought the closeout with 6am and Top Down was especially good

That's the great thing about EP for me, being able to see acts like him that I'd never normally buy a standalone gig ticket for

Don't think I've ever been to a gig before where the stage was completely empty beforehand - in fairness he and his crew owned it for an hour

Ah look. I came with expectations lower than any previous year. I’ll say at the outset that those expectations were exceeded through a combination of good company, good weather, decent music at my usual spots, and the little esoteric corners that make EP still unrivalled in scope.

    Thursday

Arrived early enough at Eco. Queue to bag checks & wristbands moved a lot more quickly than last year. Found a quiet spot beside Eco buds @rubick, @desk tidy & @Kepler21, and not too far from @CoffeeImpala. Was glad to see that the arena opened on time on the Thursday evening unlike previous years. A nice half hour in Trenchtown to ease me into my weekend was followed by The Wednesday Club & The Wedding Band of the Damned at Salty Dog (did I dream them?!?) What a bonus Freetown being open on The Thursday for the first ever time. Wandered into the Six Bars area to find some familiar faces spinning little black 7” wide discs. Glory be, the Bubbles Mod / Ska / Northern & old school soul DJ booth was back, this time in a prime spot. Shout out to Paul Davis, who was running it. Ace face/top man. Wouldn’t be the last time I would frequent there over the weekend.

    Friday

First band were Peer Pleasure at Salty Dog. A helluva racket at such an early hour, and I loved it. Here was the first of many paths crossing with @Mucker46 over the weekend. Always the best craic and got to buy him a drink for the Clashfinder. Readers…he bought me one back. Bad boy, NOT IN THE SCRIPT! A bit of Roadhouse Doors at Survivors and then got caught up in the riptide at the back of Salty Dog during TCM. Never seen a crowd like it there so early in the weekend. Bit hairy at times to be honest and I’m a big lad. Watched a bit of Ethel Cain in EA, but it was a little sedate for me at that point…I wanted to get the feet movin' and groovin', so I schlepped all the way down to Trenchtown for Bionic Rats. Missed them last year at Croí, so I was determined not to make the same mistake. They were grand but didn’t pull up any trees tbh. However, an unexpected highlight of my weekend then hoved into view. All the way back to EA for Nas. I came with few expectations, and no knowledge beyond Illmatic, but very quickly had any doubts blown away. Had a little moment there with @Rubick, who was in full ‘hands in the air, just don’t care’ mode. We both were. A wander around the site with Mrs darzog then up to Jerry Fish to close the evening off with Melts. Was great to see @Penfailed there again. I hit the wall halfway through their set, and my (rudimentary) bed was calling. Great Friday…

    Saturday

A first proper foray into Fishtown early doors. I love the vibe up there. The ‘beer garden’ there is a lovely bolt hole, and somewhere to catch your breath for 15 mins from the madness that surrounds… Saw Earthquake Hair and had a wander. A quick tent nap set me up for the rest of the day otherwise I would have been flagging badly later. TCM again at Survivors. This time though, there was room to breathe and enjoy. Kinara called, and I listened. As I was close by to the main stage, I dropped in to see The Mary Wallopers. Not my usual thing, but they were in great form and had the crowd eating out of the palm of their hand. After their set, whilst loo-bound, I counted at least 3 groups of young ‘uns singing Cod Liver Oil and the Orange Juice to themselves, all independently of each other. Back up to Fishtown for the romp that was Aoife Destruction & The Nilz. Full on old school punk energy. Lovely stuff. My other ‘set of the weekend’ followed. Jalen Ngonda. Voice of an angel, with the chops to match. Very appreciative crowd. No barging in, no chatting, no recording every utterance on their phones. Just a sound bunch appreciating some fine, fine music. Really nice to see when it happens. Followed @Seathrun66's recommendation and ventured into Brutopolis to see Nerves. First time seeing a band in that space, and it really works. If you like it (really) noisy, I cannot recommend them highly enough. Look out for them… Leaving that area I got a bit lost (honestly) and ended up in the Birdcage. Sadly, the whips hadn't come out to play at that point. The night was too young for those shenanigans. At least I know where the entrance is now (for next year!) The Scratch were up next. The other half wanted to see them again. Last time she had seen them pre-Covid, they were playing at the old 3 Music Stage that replaced Other Voices. A vastly different beast now though. Some noise from them boys. Nearly took the roof off the tent. Up to The Bonnevilles who I have had the privilege of seeing many times up North. I was a bit gutted for them that they didn’t get the crowd that they deserved, but they always bring the energy no matter what. Evening was rounded off at the Survivors Stage with a gloriously ramshackle run-through of Never Mind the Bollocks by Stef Murphy and (I believe) a hastily assembled scratch band. That mattered not, as it was far from being 'No Fun'. Bed.

    Sunday

The Stranglers at the Main Stage kicked Sunday off. Was right down at stage front with @Kepler21. Perfect early Sunday afternoon Main Stage band. Black belt Jean-Jacques Burnel is still not a man to be messed with, even at 72. Spiritual Cramp in the 3 Music Stage was followed by a light afternoon on the music front. A bit of time absorbing the nuttiness of Trailer Park, the tranquility of Croí, shooting the breeze with the good Bubbles DJ folk and sitting by the fire pit in Hazel Wood…just soaking it all up and realising that these parts of EP totally work for me. The overflowing urinals, the crushes at the Main Stage, the messiness in the campsites all feel a million miles away when I’m there. Thoroughly enjoyed a note perfect rendition of OK Computer by Karma Police at the Survivors Stage. Them boys know what they’re doing. Had plans to see Teskey Brothers, CMAT et al, but the best laid plans etc. etc. By mid-evening I knew that my weekend was on the wind down. Feet walked off me. Had a last Kinara and that was that.

    Nice things

Eco still the only place to be (despite the well-covered Dirty Disco nonsense – I thought I was having a fever dream when it was going on!) Great to catch up with pals and sound neighbours. In particular our neighbour that introduced us all to the delights of Chartreuse by handing us shots of it, long before the sun had made its way over the yard arm.

Plenty of good young Irish acts out there who are making the sort of music I prefer. Crucially, they are being booked by the fringe stages. That is (probably) enough to keep me coming back over the next couple of years whilst FR decides what they want EP to REALLY become.

Lovingly curated spaces and acts on the outer fringes. Long may this continue

    Not so nice things

Thankfully I didn’t get caught up in the traffic exiting Red Car Park later in the morning. I was on the road at 8. Signage was poor, it wasn’t clear where the actual exit was and there wasn’t one person directing traffic out of the site at that time.

I realised that for the first ever year, I hadn’t seen one act on the Trailer Park stage. Looking at Clashfinder, the only act I would have gone out of my way for would have been Post Punk Podge, and I was elsewhere at the time they were on. Personal view…there was a little bit of visible slippage in all-round quality there this year.

I may be wrong, but there seemed to be less live music in Freetown this year.

I can honestly count on one hand the number of non-Irish acts I saw this year. As much as I enjoyed the local stuff, when you look at years gone by, that is a poor return.

Pat downs. I get it. Searches are part and parcel of the festival experience. One guy though was getting very handsy at the Freetown entrance. Not on. Arms, legs, hoods, bags, yes of course. Crotch grab, and right round the back though…? Like I say, not on.

Toilet situation. I need say no more

Having said all of that…tickets already secured for next year…see you all there

Peer Pleasure. There's a band i'd completely forgotten about. Saw them a couple of years ago in Whelans with Really Good Time, thought they were decent and showed potential. The frontman is good entertainment value!

Nice one mate. Speaking of pat-downs, remember the dude beside us in the queue at Freetown checkpoint on Sunday lunchtime with half an off-licence on him? Wonder how he got on?

Was Eco comfortably spaced out this year, or fairly wedge (like 2022)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 2,718 ✭✭✭Fatfrog

Extremely well spaced out! They must have downed the capacity massively. They had their caravans and Tipis already setup in the reg. Camping area, not in beside the toilets/cold shower/generator area.

The Yogo area was much bigger and was positioned further towards the rave in the woods, it took a huge amount of space. Aside from this there were still 20 odd spaces I could see, there may have been more further towards the race, I didn’t go down the way.

Lucky the festival wasnt happening in Leeds this weekend, they are having serious issues with the wind. Pretty sure all the stages bar the Main Stage were closed all day

That’s a killer, you really feel for everyone involved! Seen footage of the general camp sites, even tents that looked to be well pitched were at 45 deg like a parallelogram, you’d have to take refuge in the car!!!

Yea it's mental, think they said certain stages would be closed the rest of the weekend which won't be great for crowd control
