What separation of church and state? There is no such thing. We just can’t have a government designated religion as did England at the time.

UAW President's speech leaves nothing ambiguous, he's fully endorsing Kamala Harris

No big fan of Hillary but that was a decent speech

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 295 ✭✭Derkaiser93

Me either. She's not a bad person but she is hard to like. She gave that speech socks though, high energy. Hopefully it's time for Harris to do what she couldn't and avenge her defeat

These people aren't going away though, they'll be back in 2028, with or without Trump, to have another go.

I don't think Trump will have the energy or capacity for 2028, assuming he loses this one. He's nearly got it now.

It'll be interesting to see if the GOP go for a Trump-like fanatic or a more moderate candidate at that point, but it'll be the first tine someone orher than Trump had rin for them since Romney 2012.

His departure could leave a vacuum that will split the party if they're not careful.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

what a long night, almost 5 hours of speeches, incl Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden, a slew of women leaders in the party, some highlighting of project 2025, survivors of Trumps horrid abortion bans, etc, etc, even Republicans against Trump, and UAW President raucously endorsing Kamala Harris while exclaiming how much of a useless scab Trump is (wouldn’t want to be a ketchup bottle in Florida right now) and that was just night one

Some of the loudest applause was for Harris herself when she made an unscheduled/surprise appearance early in the night - in a tan pantsuit

    IMG_5893.jpeg

I think Hillary reportedly had a 2 minute standing ovation as well.

The energy in the convention was quite something, night and day from the 2016 or 2020 conventions. 2016’s convention was awfully divisive between Bernie vs Hillary, and 2020 was entirely virtual.

If the Dems keep up this momentum I’m not sure that Trump has a chance anymore

Compare this also to the RNC, which was just marinaded in the wierdness of MAGA. You had Trump being introduced by a (naturally, over the top) televangelist who had to be cut off mid-wail because he just couldn't stop crewing the scenery.

Then you had Trump himself go right back into his greatest hits and went on for over an hour to a visably bored audience. And this was at the heigth of his campaign too. Even then, the RNC didn't actually give him that much of a boost. His win was mostly going to be down to Biden failing.

But this time around at the DNC we have an actually popular ticket getting oxigen for a whole week. I'd be surprised if this didn't generate at least a little bump in their popularity.

Also, MAGAfolk: it's time to workshop a better counter-argument than "They're Communists!!" I think I remember a similar argument in 2020 when Biden won. Oddly enough after 4 years, America's capitalist systems are still very much in place. Strange how that works, isn't it?

some flashes of the old Biden there. Good to see. Makes the people questioning his mental state look like mugs.

These conventions have no effect on the outcome. It's all preaching to the converted. Hilarious that you think trump has no chance. , it's 50/50.

A good convention has a measurable impact on voters. All the undecideds will be watching to some degree

They give a bounce but that bounce will be well gone by the time the election comes around. No effect on the result really.

Not if the rest of the campaign maintains momentum.

The DNC convention was a roaring success on night one judging by the reaction of the trumpettes here

Good. Have you seen the state of the place? Bridges falling apart, roads with potholes the size of a small African nation...

The fact is that corporations are now hoarding too much money and there needs to be a sort of reset somehow.

I'm a big believer in maximum pay, as well as minimum pay.

Some CEO's are now taking 400+ times the amount of their workers. Sorry, but that's not right. (I imagine the likes of Musk and Bezos are much higher) and that's well paid work. Looking at low wage companies, CEO's can be paid over 600x their lowest paid employee.

    Source (from 2022)

    https://www.businessinsider.com/top-ceos-make-399-times-more-than-workers-2022-10?op=1

To put this all in perspective, in 1978, CEOs made around 30 times more than workers, which is still a lot more, but is much fairer.

It's funny that you never hear MAGA people note that taxing people and paying people fairly actually made America "great" in the first place. It was Reaganomics that really started destroying the country.

Marginal tax rate for individuals under Eisenhower was 92%.

Got the US the interstate highway system, DARPA (incubator for the Internet), NASA… Oh, plenty of employment and a huge expansion of population.

Reagan with his voodoo economics gave rise to an environment that led to Convicted Felon Trump.

    Americans are crippled by two myths;

    • The American dream
    • Reds under the bed

These two myths effectively maintain America as a playground for the billionaires.

Other than MAGA sheeple banging on about your 2nd point, having grown up in the USA during the Cold War and emigrating before Convicted Felon Trump was elected, I don't think 'reds under the bed' was even a thought.

The American dream lie is indeed crippling, as is the effects of the 'greed is good' philosophy embodied in Reagan and his idiots like Alan Greenspan and my favorite idiot, Larry Kudlow, with special acknowledgement to Charles Laffer.

Add to that the pathetic education system leading to a nation of credulous morons and you have where we are today.

The strongest attack in America is still your a socialist. Still evokes a pavlovian response, hence Reds under the bed. Socialists are the enemy within the state.

Ah man, they've brain washed you at last. The separation of church and state was a fundamental building block on the United States.

    Thomas Jefferson:

"Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man & his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between Church & State. Adhering to this expression of the supreme will of the nation in behalf of the rights of conscience, I shall see with sincere satisfaction the progress of those sentiments which tend to restore to man all his natural rights, convinced he has no natural right in opposition to his social duties"

The US supreme court has upheld this view for over 150 years. It should respected.

Spain introduced a "solidarity tax" with a rate of around 2% on the top 0.5% of earners in the country.

It's estimated that if that was done globally it would raise $2T dollars annually. More than is required to fund all of the Climate change efforts and much more.

In the UK for example it would raise ~£31B a year which would almost completely wipe out their budget deficit.

Asking a billionaire to pay ~2% of their earnings from their vast wealth instead of allowing poor people die in the gutter seems like a damn good deal to me.

About a month back you promised us that Trump had a strategy to combat Harris. When should we expect this strategy to emerge? Cause ATM, they're a train wreck.

You're hard work. You have just enough knowledge to be dangerous.

    It is 50/50 today.

All candidates get a bump in the poles after the convention. It is measurable every year. Sometimes it's even a momentum changer.

Its a bad look for Trump to be holding these little controlled seminars where he hangs his head and looks dejected reading off a teleprompta with a line of minders standing behind to keep him on message.

    Reeks if defeat.

And even then he can't stick to the script and disappears up his own arse rambling on about some nonsense or other.

His whole schtick is looking really old and boring now.

Super-fans love watching the re-runs but everyone else is just tuning it out now.

I think your missing what "Reds under the bed" morphed into which is for republicans at least just calling everyone you don't like a socialist/communist, that's the modern equivalent.
