This summer break could really do with being a week shorter…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,983 ✭✭✭bren2001

Another month break after Singapore. The design of the calendar is absolutely bonkers. It's like they hate fans

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,321 ✭✭✭✭klose

Yeah triple headers are probably a nightmare for the teams and these long 3-4 week breaks (obviously the summer break is standard) are a killer for the fans, surely there’s somewhere they could meet in the middle.

It's a tough balance. Only 52 weeks in a year which means we're only 2 races short of having a Grand Prix every second weekend all year round.

    This too shall pass.

Less triple headers, more races every 2nd week would be my choice.

Would be neat to break into neater legs; European, Asian, Middle Eastern, American etc to give it better structure. Could even give in-season trophies to winner of each leg, keep things interesting even if the overall championship is settled.

I know they've moved in that direction in terms of the calendar, but bizarre to have such a break between Spa and Zandvoort...

That's such a good idea. Mini championships. So good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,494 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

It is odd how 2 tracks super close to each other aren't done as a double header, but Baku and Singapore is a double header.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,983 ✭✭✭bren2001

Canada randomly thrown in between Monaco and Spain is utter madness. Why not pair it with Miami and just have a proper "the Americas" swing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,364 ✭✭✭waynescales1

Mini championships is a terrible idea.

Canada, Miami and Austin could run a triple header before the Europe races, then later in the year do the Mexico, Vegas and Brazil races.

In this day and age, sustainability should dictate the format, along with common sense!

was about to say it might be a fun idea, but F1 fans would hate it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,635 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

Ah, it gets complicated when you factor in shipping things to far-away races vs flying them. So you can drive stuff to Monaco for this weekend but ship other things to canada for next weekend.

But the real sustainability issue with F1 is fans travelling to attend races, not cars on track or getting equipment to tracks. Best not pull that thread...

I think it's a class idea (albeit, came in as a fan from Drive to Survive). I wouldn't allow upgrades during a mini championship, only at the end.

The calendar is so fan unfriendly. Season starts and it's just 2 week break after 2 week break. It should start with two triple headers and get **** going.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,635 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

Try To sell that to F1 fans. They'd hate it. They hate the idea is sprint races, safety equipment like the halo etc. They hate charge, no matter how good it might be … until it's become established, and then they'd hate changing away from it.

F1 fans are a conservative bunch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,983 ✭✭✭bren2001

Ah yeah, I'd say it's a very unpopular opinion around here. When I see people defending Monaco like…..

Would say, I don't like sprint races myself. I think they're silly.

I think a mini championship would be a brilliant idea. I did not like Sprint races when thet first came in mostly because if the way it was done but the way its done now is not too bad. I still think they are a gimic though and that no one will care or remember who one each sprint race in 2024 ten years from now.

The schedule kind of makes sense logistically at the moment. It’s all well and good wanting to have all races in the Americas at the same time etc. But on any given race day the only equipment that was at the previous race is usually just the cars and some specialised equipment. So if they were to do that they’d end up with all the gear on one side of the globe, which isn’t ideal when shipping times are factored in. I’m sure scheduling could be improved somewhat but it’s not a case of just packing up a GP and moving onto the next one. Good video on it below.

we have had some decent pairings (sometimes more than 2)

    Bahrain - Saudi

    Aus - Japan - China

Miami - Italy - Monaco - Canada - Spain - Austria, As someone mentioned for the sake of expense and sustainability, Miami Canada should have been put together.

    Britain - Hungary - Belgium

    Italy - Baku - Singapore… ???

USA - Mexico - Brazil - Las Vegas

    Qatar - Abu Dhabi

Care to expand or are you just going to claim "tradition"

    This too shall pass.

Didnt expect a Sam, from wendover productions, video.

You wouldn't need all 5 setups in one continent. For example, you could ship 2 over to the America. First two in Montreal and Las Vegas. The logistics for one setup would be:

    • Montreal → Texas → Mexico
    • Las Vegas → Miami→ Brazil

    With a race order being:

    • Montreal → Vegas → (week off) → Texas → Miami → (week off) → Mexico → Brazil

That would be something like, "the Americas" leg. You could easily do one in Europe and the middle east. It would be almost impossible in Asia/Australia tho.

I'd imagine the main logistical issue is track time. F1 can't dictate when Vegas is shut down or when a race track is to be used as other things happen there. It is complicated but I do think the calendar does need to be heavily revised.

It's a crap idea. We have a season. Not lots of sub seasons.

    It's race week!

I was expecting Bonington to follow Lewis to Ferrari.

    Apparently not.

    This too shall pass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,990 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

I read before that when Bonnington saw what young kimi was doing in the car, he decided to stay. Don't know how true that is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,426 ✭✭✭Hijpo

I thought it was a stipulation in one of their contracts that he couldn't go. Either ferrari had it in Hamiltons contract and Merc had it in Bonos. Read it a while ago when the switch was announced.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,983 ✭✭✭bren2001

I had read a while ago that it was an anti poach clause in Hamiltons Merc contract. When leaving he couldn't bring staff with him or something.

Be odd for Ferrari to put it in. They can just say "no". Be an odd thing for Merc to put in Bonos contract. I'm not sure how they word word that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,140 ✭✭✭muckwarrior

I for one won't be sad to never hear "get in there Lewis" ever again.
