Do Japanese Imports Still Need Additional Rust Protection?

I've heard that JDM cars used to have minimal underbody rust protection, as the roads weren't gritted in Japan. Apparently, it was wise to get underbody rust protection applied if you got a Japanese import. Is this still the case?
