I highly doubt Zubimendi would even want to join us so why get worked up over something that wasn't going to happen.

Apparently he has said he wants to remain in Spain.

I would suspect we're a lot closer to ffp than we even think.

I mentioned Fofana in the Liverpool thread to a United fan who was asking about Liverpool No. 6 targets as he was linked to Liverpool last season.

I think he would have done a brilliant job for Liverpool last season but we went with Endo in the end.

I watched a few games of Monaco last season to keep an eye on him and Minamino and he played well in all the games I watched. Just a very good all-rounder.

I like Fofana, but he's not a number 6, imo.

Berge AND Fofana would be a good play, but I reckon we'd need to move on mctominay and eriksen to accomplish it.

I'd be happy enough with the 2 of them signed, improvements for sure.

Hard to disagree with this. Despite the clear and obvious strides the club has made in the last few months, nothing will ever be enough for some fans.

They don't realise we are broke without sales, Zubimendi going to Liverpool has so many saying "why aren't we in for him" well we can't afford paying a lump sum of 60m!

Next summers window will be the big one, I can't see us getting top 4 so we have to win the Europa (easier said than done)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,931 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

But that would STILL leave us a player short in midfield? Why are people obsessed with leaving us light in midfield?

We need to add a midfielder first before we can then sell one to add another. One in one out doesnt work when your already one short.

    Casemiro/Berge for DM

    Mainoo/Fofana CM

    Bruno/Mount AM

With Collyer going to be getting minutes too I don't think we would be light.

Berge, Casemiro, mainoo, Fofana, Mount, Bruno.

I don't see that leaving us short?

I don't like casemiro at dm, but if we're not selling him he's a number in there.

But but but, does Greenwood's sale not there is a magic 125m in the coffers?

At least that's what some have been arguing with me about it. PSR and Chelsea have ruined the concept that there is real money involved in deals.

while generally correct I'd have assumed Mount will be seeing time on the right over Antony aswell as his AM back up role. And I would like another CM option to go with Mainoo and Fofana as that is by far the most tiring role in a team + I really don't want Mainoo burning out. Its true that Berge could fill CM but that means all the DM then falls onto Casemiro backed up by Collyer. Keeping one of McT or Eriksen gives us that one extra covering player.

6 options for a 3 man midfield is very tight, I like to have a 7th just incase for injuries/fatigue and prevent them all getting bollocked at the same time.

Casemiro doesn't have the legs for midfield anymore. At Madrid he was surrounded by better players i.e Modric and Kroos to do all the running. He would suit the Saudi league because it's a retirement home for players. I worry about this season that we will find it hard to get into top 4. Onana will still be prone to the occasional brain fart and unless Rashford rediscovers his form and Zirkee hits the ground running we will struggle to score again. Obviously the midfield at this point in time is weak. De Ligt won't solve the defensive issues. Juventus got rid of him and Munich made Dier first choice even though De Ligt was fit. Must be a reason for that. It will take another 3-4 transfer windows including the January ones before we are realistically challenging again.

Its not just about the transfers in, look at the difficulty in getting anyone to leave.

Wan Bissaka looking for a 7m pay off to join West Ham. He was one who couldve been off loaded last summer but didnt happen and we are still left with

    Maguire

    Lindleof

    Eriksen

    Hannibal

    Pellestri

    Casemiro

    Sancho

    McTominay

Kwambala and Van de Beek are the only two squad players from last season actually sold. Anyone else left as free agents and I think that is going to be the only way to get rid of alot of the players that are no longer deemed part of the project

I think Sancho is here to stay, McTominay we are being short changed, Maguire will stay, only Saudi can afford Casemiro and they don't look like biting, I hear Celtic and Rangers both want Hannibal so probably should happen soon, Lindelof, Eriksen and Pellistri will probably move on deadline day.

Its crazy to think how we have been ran as a club when you look at the list above on way over 1 million in wages every week and we don't want them and very little interest from any other team either.

IMO there is a difference between it taking years to be a title winning side, and taking years to be a side that can compete for top 4.

Things can change over the next 3 weeks but right now I think our squad looks less capable of competing for the top 4 than we felt it was last summer.

IMO we went into this summer needing a minimum of 3 signings to give us a solid base. CB, CM, Forward. Without the CM signing, I think this summer should be regarded as a disaster - because there is simply no way we should be going into this coming season with a midfield that is as bad or worse than the absolute embarassment we had last season. Yet, right now that is the case. And if funds are low, and we can't do everything, wtf have we prioritised signing a second CB over a first DM? Why have we bid 35/40million for De Ligt if money is that tight?

There are things I think INEOS have improved. I like the set piece coach they have brough in. I think Haake could be interesting.

But, IMO, there are bigger question marks over the things they have done than many people want to talk about.

I'm a bit weary of RVN coming in tbh. Vivel could be very interesting but the short term nature of his appointment strikes me odd - and then our current 'priority' targets being a right back who played for EtH and a CB who played for EtH doesn't scream that our recruitment team is firing on all cylinders.

I agree that Casemiro was playing with better midfielders at Real but he also in his own right was the world's best in his position and doing his role for a long time.

I've never heard it described as Kross and Modric "doing the running for Casemiro" though. It would be the other way around.

De Ligt didn't lose his place to Dier either from everything I have read. In fact it suggested that Dier enjoyed his best form at Bayern when paired with De Ligt.

Look what you say overall is true - we are 3 windows away from a challenge at the very minimum. But we certainly aren't 3 windows away from being a Top4 team. Look at the results of Villa, Spurs and Chelsea over the final 10-15 games. Those are not insurmountable teams.

Villa will likely drop off with added games.

Chelsea hit form under Poch but have decided to hit the reset button so they will go through a bedding in period. Chelsea don't give time either so there will be that added pressure.

Spurs are difficult to know. They started great last season but they have a similar issue inside in their squad in that the next choice from the 1st choice is too far a drop off so injuries will always hit them harder.

Utd as things stand have not corrected enough of the problems but with 3 weeks to go we can still definitely pull together a squad that can scores 10 points or so better than last season and that tends to get you 4th. I'd want it to be a bit more comfortable but it's very doable.

We tend to think of chasing the top 4 spots in a similar way to chasing the title but the truth is the sides that finish 4th/5th are never anywhere near as consistent. There will be plenty of chances to get into that race. Utd just need to make sure we aren't making the same mistakes as last season again.

Maybe you’ve listened to Paul Scholes on the Overlap today and took what he said about de Ligt as gospel but it’s absolute nonsense 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,268 ✭✭✭✭billyhead

Why did Juve get rid of him? If he was better than Tah Bayern would keep him and Tah isn't exactly an outstanding defender. The excuse is his salary but that's horse manure. I am sure Dier and Tah combined would be on a lot more then him. I am just concerned that if we do sign him he will be the Dutch Maguire prone to a lot of mistakes and as slow as a turning cargo ship.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,268 ✭✭✭✭billyhead

I see that Bayern have pulled out of the Tah deal so it will probably be Maguire as the starting CB until Yoro is fit.

Good read but it's total bullshít.

The club have spent over 400m in the 2 years since Ten Hag came in (not including this summer).

To say there has been lack of investment and that there should have been another 50m spent on Kim (they have said 30m for some reason in the thread) and that is why they are not in the Champions League now is just so far from reality.
