you really think he thought just show up and go through the motions?

Yet saying yesterday a WR likely needed. How is that at all sense?

So in other words he was saying to beat the opposition he likely needs a WR. Does that sound like someone going through the motions and not rating the opposition?

or maybe, like you he was looking g at the bookies stupid odds and thought “sure I can’t lose.”

Hopefully he will get another gold or two in 4 years. Today was not his best day.

Im having a field of dreams moment myself...its been a fantastic games so far and not just because of Irish involvement and success....some of the stuff has been immense imo...femke bol in the relay, that 100m mens final, the 10,000m final, both mountain bike races the bmx to name a few personal highlights...all thoroughly enjoyable and just excellent spectacles and entertainment....**** top class stuff so far for a couch potato sports fan like me

I'm still hopeful of more medals and I'm convinced we are gonna get an unexpected one somewhere; Kellie and Rhasidat are the blindingly obvious gold candidates- but Leona Maguire in the golf, any one of the 3 showjumpers, and possibly Lara Gillespie in the track cycling all could medal. We aint finished yet. McIlroy missed his chance there once again, but the good news means we were spared a dozen pages of pointless palaver about anthems, flags and nordiness. On reflection, I'm not really a fan of Olympic Golf. It adds nothing to the spectacle and Scheffler is about as passionate and inspiring as an apprentice undertaker

I’ve got discovery plus too. No adverts or totally biased commentary. Worth the €6.99 for that alone. I was watching the tennis final live today because the rest didn’t show it.

Equestrian medal wouldn’t be out of the question. Here’s hoping. Adeleke & Kellie medals too & I’m happy.

Noah Lyles proved a lot of people wrong including me who doubted him. He came across ok on Sprint. He puts on an act. I really don’t mind him.

Hopefully yes. No it was his second best day. Not a bad week in all.

Adeleke is not at all blindingly obvious for a gold medal. Adeleke might get on the podium, but it’s not at all close to a given. A top 5 would still be a very good result.

Edit: you mean a gold candidate? Yes..

Yes, I agree with that but she's the obvious hope with regard to Irelands remaining chances. Majority of our team have finished their events thus far.

Surely we are in with a chance for a Breakdancing medal if the kids of any of the lads who used to throw the mats down in Grafton St in the 80s inherited the genes.

Hey you the Rock Steady Crew let’s be havin ya

yes. I edited my response to you

I think she’s only medal hopeful left. Kellie has her medal, just hoping it changes color

Someone deleted their reply to me but say a boxer is classed as not male by IBA then can they or have they applied to be classed as male and fight as male.

Surely they can box as one or the other.?

That performance from Novak Djokovic in the final is for the ages. Eurosport are showing it again. Both players were phenomenal. Alcaraz has won 4 Grand Slams from all 4 of his finals, beating Novak in successive Wimbledon finals and has won 2 Grand Slams this year. He had won 8 out of his last 9 finals, going back to last year, and it was Djokovic who beat him.

To come back after surgery so quickly on his knee, Djokovic has had his setbacks, he looked good to win another French Open until that injury. To come back here to Roland Garros, had the tougher draw, beat the crowd, beat the favourite, at his age, against someone who is in the prime when he's nearing the exit door, both players so well and win. You have to respect that.

I respect him, and his beliefs, which he's never compromised on. Even though it's undoubtedly cost him another couple of Grand Slams at least. This victory, for me, and for anyone objectively looking at it, makes him the undisputed greatest mens player of all time.

Novak has done it all. He's ahead on the Majors. I wonder would he have in his head been willing to sacrifice all Grand Slams going forward for this victory. This was his last chance saloon to complete the Golden Grand Slam. Only Agassi and Nadal have completed it in the men's game. He's got it now and it was clear it meant so much to him.

Scottie landed about a foot over the lake, Tom Kim about half that. Loads of them were just over the line but almost all went for it.

Some of the biggest certs going for gold later. Faith, Keely & Valerie Allman all but home and hosed.

Valerie Allman is one of my favourite athletes. Ex dancer, she has an unbelievable physique and a great smile. She’ll smash the field later

The women’s pole vault is the most competitive gold on offer later. Molly for Britain has a genuine chance for gold, although every time I see her perform she never wins. I have already tipped Angelica Moser for a medal although I think the most likely winner is Nina Kennedy for Aus.

And although again it's of his own making, he's not had a coach in his box since Australia.

something that the world outside Northern Ireland is missing.
Here is the current gold medal table per capita. ROI is also impressive and just misses out on top 10. GB languishing in 22 and the USA in 30th 😀

    The true table

    IMG_7068.jpeg

can ni be caught. 5 times as many golds per capita as any other country in the world 🥇

And I think the individual golds table may be even more impressive.

It doesn't include Dominica which has 1 gold medal with a population of 72,000.

That table is wrong. Dominica should be on it. Also, is that Ratio for Georgia correct? Same with St Lucia unless I’m reading it wrong

    EDIT

I see there were 2 just before me on the ball also 😬

He's getting paid 500K a day by NBC to be there apparently.

Really looking forward to 400m Heats today.

We may have outside chance in equestrian too. Coyle especially and maybe Sweetman. Hard see O Connor horse doing much which is pity.

since the 80’s there has been no shortage of ‘brash confident’ cheating w@nkers in the men’s sprinting word…… Carl Lewis, Linford (and his lunch box), Maurice Green, gatlan, and the list goes on……! Ć

It was won in the fastest time ever swam. This can't be ignored.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,714 ✭✭✭Musicrules

Rhasidat is not a gold candidate, not even close.

Wiffen’s bronze was some achievement. The exertion and skill required to reach that level is some achievement. One thing that perplexes me though is the following :-

Wiffen was swimming by next to the Italian - as he was in the 800 mt final . So he should have had no problem in tracking the Italian. Yet one of the RTE panel members gave the reason for Wiffen’s ‘below par’ performance is the fact that Wiffen could not see how the American was progressing because the Italian ‘blocked ‘ his view.
so if that was the case ,then why did Wiffen NOT TRACK the Italian and win the silver medal at least and in the hope that the American was someplace else but not ahead of them.
It’s of interest that Wiffen mentioned the same issue. It still beggars belief why he did not track the Italian who was right beside him for the WHOLE race and slightly in front of him for most of it - which was an ideal position for Wiffen
