People complaining about RTE’s coverage is understandable but in their defence, the Olympics has been completely watered down. There’s wayyyyyyyy too many events now, thus having more events to give attention to.

When people think Olympics they think Track & Field and Swimming, then maybe Gymnastics. Now we have too much bollox at it between Golf and Tennis which is so stupid when you think about it; Soccer there’s absolutely no need for, now BMX and Skateboarding, Trampoloning. It’s genuinely gone out of control. So I’ll defend RTE, and I can’t believe I’m saying that.

If they showed the rest of the gymnastics final and missed an Irish person in action in the most niche of sports you’d still get a tonne of complaints….

Leave Skateboarding etc to their X Games… the reason they’re so chill like the person above said, is because the Olympics isn’t historically a big deal for them, so why would they care? It’s supposed to be the pinnacle of your sport… Golf - The Masters, Tennis - Wimbledon.. I could go on

    Huge day ahead.

5 medal possibilities. One we expect and hopefully we least get one more which would be real bonus.

I saw a bit of that on the Eurosport, to even constantly have to thread water they must be ultra fit. I was wondering why former top swimmers do not switch to it for the craic as they get older. It seems like a mix of basketball/handball/rugby in the water.

There is one hybrid basketball version I am always fascinated with at the Olympics. The 3 on 3 basketball on a half court I never see it anywhere else until the Olympics.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I remember a newspaper headline in 1976 at the start of the 2nd week, when the athletics started.."Now the real games begin". It kind of sums it up for me.

I agree with you I think the Olympics should be left to amateur sports let it be their pinnacle. If there was non-professional soccer, for instance it would be very interesting.

I know Ireland has a chance in the Golf but there is something off about it in the Olympics. Multi-millionaires going over for the craic really they hardly dreamed of Gold in golf when they were youngsters

I have found it very hard to keep up with everything that is going on, I have just seen bits here and bits there, of all sorts of sports. Then a lot of it is doubled because there are male and female versions.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I agree on the pinnacle of your sport thing. Soccer, tennis, golf and road cycling (which I love) which have ready made huge global prestige events would not be missed. Should also cut all the horsey shte because the only animals taking part should be humans

I think stuff like BMX or trampolining which most people forget exists except once every four years should be accommodated though and most people don't have a clue what X-Games is. Maybe I'm biased because I think the BMX race and ski cross are great to watch (once every four years 🤣)

Just had a look for comparison and it was

    1924: 126 events in 17 sports

    1976: 198 events in 21 sports

    2024: 329 events in 32 sports

Golf should be least matchplay. Stroke play is stupid for me. Least matchplay would be bit differnt and more exciting and I think medal be more earned even if silver or bronze.

Dont mind tennis In it for some reason.

Team event, 1 man & 1 woman from each country. Matchplay. R&A and USGA could use it to promote the womens game.

Rory + Leona would be brilliant to watch as would Shane + Stephaine.

The issue with amateur for an event like that is that very few people would watch it and it does nothing to promote the sport.

    That's just my take tho.

    What's matchplay ?

Is that like the Ryder Cup set-up ?

Yeah, 3 most common types are in the RC:

    • Team 4 ball (2 per team): 4 balls on the course. Best score from each team counts. Win a point if your team wins the hole.
    • Team foursomes: 2 balls on the course. I take the first shot, you take the second shot and so on. If we score better than you, you get a point.
    • Singles matchplay: 1v1, straightforward to follow. If I win the hole, I win a point etc.

    I agree.

Soccer, tennis and golf shouldn't be there.

It should be the pinnacle of each participating sport and a showcase for sports that we don't see very often.

Possibly having the likes of Rory, Scheffler, Schauffle, Alcaraz, Nadal, Djokovic, Gauff (and previously Neymar/Messi) taking part helps with the finances of the overall Olympics - TV Money, sponsorship and overall promotion/advertisement - and filters down to enabling the lesser unheralded events to be viable?

I don't mind there being lots of sports but get rid of the ones where the Olympics isn't the pinnicle of it eg football, tennis, golf

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,186 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

That's exactly it. The more stars in attedance, the more people in attendance, means the more money spent, means the more people tell other people how great France is.

    Money Money Money

Yes, the IBA. They were removed from Olympic boxing last year as they were believed to be corrupt, fixing fight results and because of the close links of their boss with Putin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,186 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

Obviously just changed in Name only.

Anyway, we should focus on what's going to be a great day of action instead of ring brawling and corruption

Yes, and the start of the athletics programme too. Very interested to see how the mixed relay team runs this evening and if Mawdsley can get us into a relay final.

Whilst you are agreeing with me to an extent, I think you are seeing it in a more negative light than I am.

I'm looking at it on the basis of 'does the presence of Rory and Nadal help with enabling the speed-climbing/kayaking/canoeing arenas and the upkeep of those athletes for 3 weeks?'. If so, then it's surely a positive thing?

Like just saying 'Money Money Money' is over-simplistic. I'd like to think I'm quite socialist, but I'd still accept the capitalist view-point that these big multi-sports events are entitled to do all they can to minimise their losses/breakeven.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,186 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

I'm agreeing with you completely. I'm all for more Sports. However, i'd dump a few currently like Boxing and maybe skateboarding

Watching the Hammer throw and not one of them have managed to hit the qualify target yet with many being well short, also the WR and OR are held by USSR athletes from 86 and 88 surely these should be discounted considering how hard modern athletes train along with modern sport science making it very likely these records were obtained while pumped full of stuff.

We'll qualify from the Heats, i'd be pretty sure of that. We have enough with Healey, Becker and Charlene to get us through

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,345 ✭✭✭MayoSalmon

Golf should be amateur aswell and the format changed

Scramble, matchplay, mixed etc.…4 days of stroke play is so unnecessary

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,132 ✭✭✭✭callaway92

Dunno about the finances point - Would love to see if there’s a specific correlation though.

Another frustrating thing from my own point of view now is people can play the whole ‘oh yay the most medals we’ve ever gotten’ etc..

Well yes… there’s more events so you’d expect more. Again it’s probably a per capita view of things (competitors to events and their return of medals) compared to purely ‘here’s an Olympic Games and here’s how many medals we got’

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37 ZedCar

Agree with this. The only sports that should be in the Olympics are ones where the Olympics is the biggest event in that sport

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,132 ✭✭✭✭callaway92

    Yeh I think so anyway

However it’s hard to see them ever scaling it back too much now. More likely the Games is spread out a small bit longer over time.

Of course it will grow, Just like the World Cup is growing, Like the Euro's will grow.

At this point I'd consider dumping all/most of the sports where humans get to decide who wins or loses…

In rowing, running, swimming and a host of other sports, there is no doubt or question as to who has won as it's simply a case of who finished 1st/fastest/jumped highest/longest, or how many goals/points they scored etc… All measurable metrics that can't be disputed, but when you are relying on a human to decide a score based on what they've seen, then I'm afraid its open to manipulation, and therefore not definitive who actually won.. (unless it's blindingly obvious, but even then we are seeing boxers lose fights that they've clearly not lost).

Mind you if Rhys wins gold on the pommel horse (decided/judged by humans), I'll gladly take it.
