RTÉ ONE, 2, Junior, and Player

The BBC are restricted to showing two live streams at any one time. They will be showing live coverage on BBC 1 switching to BBC 2 when the news is on and a second stream of coverage on the BBC Red Button simulcast on IPlayer. They don’t seem to be restricted in how many hours they can show.

The BBC sport article above states that the BBC will have over 250 hours of live coverage and a curated stream, edited highlights. I haven't seen a figure for RTE but I understood from various articles that the EBU were involved in negotiating the deal with WBD on behalf of the broadcast members. Maybe the big 5, Germany, France, Spain, Italy and UK have more influence with WBD and given that the BBC has licence income in the region of £3.5 billion, (4 billion euro) versus RTE's 100+ million euro, there is nocomparison in the two's buying power.

RTÉ TV License was €197m in 2022, and was pretty consistent over the course of the previous 7 years, its ad revenue / commercial revenue was around €155m and again pretty consistent those 7 years. Content may also be down to how much RTÉ want to show from the general OSI / EBU feed without RTÉ commentators.

Cost of Rights is based on the size of the country, so RTÉ even without the EBU would be paying far less than any of the bigger countries rights. The buying power is based on the size of your market.

225m is just the amount being giving by the Licence fee and the Government. Government are guaranteeing 225m amount but keeping the licence at 160 meaning that even if they get 100% compliance they would never get to 225m. That's my reading happy to be corrected on that.

I assume that 123m in licence fee sales doesn't include the government top-up for 2023? They brought it up to 175m?

RTÉ income has been fairly consistent over the last few years, so they really should be able to plan ahead, but with mismanagement that would be largely difficult alright.

Since when did RTE 1 start showing Ros na Rúin on Saturday mornings? I only noticed it was on when I was checking the Olympics schedule.

Just noticed the LIVE function has been added to the RTE player on Walker tv, I don't when the update took place. RTE1,2 and News are currently available with two additional options, one for RTEjunior plus ?. The app hasn't been updated on a Toshiba tv, another Vestel brand, nor on a Now stick. Oh and there were no ads, the breaks were there but went straight back into programme.

You still have to announce what you are going to be showing. I think they really on became big when TV3 rebranded in 2006, RTÉ had done them with the launch of TV3, big promos every autumn. Last years was put to bed due to the scandal surrounding the mismanagement of RTÉ and that they had rented out the RDS for a day at a cost of €70k for their autumn lunch in 2022.

Really RTÉ should be marketing heavily new programmes as the become available, as you say due to streaming. But RTÉ would need a streaming strategy for this, along with a list of programmes that they plan to announce each month. I don't expect this to happen.

A look back at TV3s earlier Autumn schedule launches. Funny that a lot of TV3 and RTE schedule launches in the late 90s and 00s contained big list of film premieres - something which TV3/VMtv have walked completely away from in the past 8 or so years.
