Surprised Rhythm Nation & Escapade didnt make either Top 10... I remember them getting a lot of airplay / videoplay.

The Martine McCutcheon version of "On the Radio" reached #7 in the UK, outcharting the original by wide margins. It only reached #18 here.

Oddly enough the same chart placing in Ireland as the original version!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,314 ✭✭✭its_steve116

#17 here, only #28 in the UK. The Robbie Williams version reached #2 in the UK but only #6 here.

Chris re-recorded a lot of early material for his 1988 compilation New Light Through Old Windows including I Can Hear Your Heartbeat. Those versions tend to get played more often on radio than the originals. There was a good remastering campaign in 2019 which saw 2CD editions of Shamrock Diaries, On The Beach, Dancing With Strangers, The Road To Hell & Auberge. Plus a 3CD compilation called ERA1 covering the 1979-1984 material (B-sides, single edits, 12" mixes). Sadly nothing more since then.

Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark - Never Turn Away. My favourite single of theirs. #29 in Ireland, #70 in the UK. I bought three copies of it which presumably helped - two 7"s (one for my friend) and the 12".

From their fifth single onwards, every 45 from The Smiths did better in Ireland than the UK. With one exception - Bigmouth Strikes Again which did not chart here. I remember due to Rough Trade distribution issues, it never arrived here until the end of the summer of 1986.

William, It Was Really Nothing #8 vs #17 in UK

How Soon Is Now? #5 vs #24

    Shakespeare's Sister #11 vs #26

That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore #20 vs #49

The Boy With The Thorn In His Side #15 vs #23

    Panic #7 vs #11

    Ask #9 vs #14

Shoplifters Of The World Unite #7 vs #12

    Sheila Take A Bow #3 vs #10

    Girlfriend In A Coma #12 vs #13

    I Started Something I Couldn't Finish #13 vs #23

Last Night I Dreamt Somebody Loved Me #17 vs #30

Having said that, the number of sales needed to chart in Ireland were much lower. Sadly this type of information appears to be really closely guarded. As do format sales - in UK, US, Australia, Germany and Japan there are annual reports of physical sales figures (LP, CD, cassette, download, streaming). In Ireland these figures are like the Fourth Secret Of Fatima.

There was an earlier single too - Ever Fallen In Love - originally on the Something Wild soundtrack that was also included on The Raw & The Cooked. It did one better in the UK though.

I think that's one of the few albums with singles released in four successive years (there are a few albums with three year single cycles)

1987 - Ever Fallen In Love

1988 - She Drives Me Crazy

1989 - Good Thing, Don't Look Back, I'm Not The Man I Used To Be

    1990 - I'm Not Satisfied

Yeah Sacrifice was a song I distinctly remember getting more airplay here in 1989 compared with its double a-side re-release year of 1990

Mad that both versions of NLHSA peaked at the same positions in both Ireland and Britain.

I saw an article this morning online about Drive by The Cars. In the UK, it reached #5 on its first release and #4 on reissue. On one of those occasions, it reached #3 in Ireland (I don't know when and the Irish chart entries are not shown on Wikipedia).

Drive's chart success in Ireland was twofold

    Entered the chart on 07/10/1984

    15 - 03 - 04 - 07 - 14 - 30

And then after Live Aid, came back on 25/08/1985

    08 - 05 - 05 - 13 - 17 - 19

The track was compiled on The Hits Album (November 1984) and then again on Hits 3 (November 1985)

UK Mix forum is good for Irish Charts - see this thread https://www.ukmix.org/forum/chart-discussion/chart-analysis/10872551-irish-chart-discussions-index

"Hands Off… She's Mine" is another song I wouldn't've guessed was an Irish #1. Even more impressive as it spent only 2 weeks in the Irish charts!

I don't think Gabriel ever had a UK top 3 hit, did he? His old band Genesis never got higher than #4 in their homeland.
