you would need to give me a history lesson, old twitter never bended? an absolute totem poll to free speech? I somehow doubt it.

They did indeed have free speech in that you could tweet whatever you like however as is typical with people of your political persuasion in this thread what you are actually looking for is freedom from consequence and if that speech infringed on the rules of the site there were consequences…..

Its hilarious you trying to compare the old and new owners though as musk has shown he is completely inconsistent in his free speech advocacy by aiding despotic regimes with censorship as well as banning his own critics.

The ironic thing about your "question" is the previous owners never made proclamations about free speech and were very clear on the rules of the site and what would happen if you broke them. Musk has made many free speech proclamations and has ignored all of them when it suits him.

Elon Musk’s social media platform X has been hit with a warning from the European Union for deceiving users into engaging with potentially harmful content, in the latest show of force by Brussels against Big Tech’s practices.

The bloc’s regulators are worried that X’s use of blue check marks for verified accounts “deceives” users into believing such accounts are safe when “there is evidence of motivated malicious actors abusing” the check mark system, regulators said in provisional findings issued Friday.

The move from the EU under its Digital Services Act (DSA) could eventually pave the way for fines of up to 6 per cent of X’s revenue, if the company fails to appease the EU’s concerns.

So, the way things are going, about three fiddy

That wasn't your claim/insinuation. You insinuated that if Twitter's old owners were still in charge, would they be suppressing Biden gaffe videos even more. You would need to provide some basis that a) they have suppressed similar videos of Biden in the past (since you say "more"), and b) that Biden gaffe videos have been sppressed at all. From my memory, the only thing Twitter previously said they got requests from the Biden administration about were covid disinformation and leaked videos of Hunter nude (which constitutes revenge porn, is illegal, and therefore an absolutely valid request to make and for Twitter to adhere to).

I wonder if you're shifting the goalposts and making up responses to things that weren't said again because you know you have no basis for your insinuations.

@Penn They clearly said "I wonder.…", thereby allowing themselves to put forward a conspiracy theory while alleviating

Thanks for the tip, must try that myself sometime.

@Brussels Sprout & @Hotblack Desiato Thanks for posting links, I wonder are people properly tired of me posting on #DSA issues.

Even RTE reported and a few tweets about it on the platform. Thierry Breton, European Commission and Margrethe Vestager.

Wasnt the Hunter's laptop story supressed by old Twitter?

The European Commission calling out the blue tick scam which Musk enabled:

X, FORMERLY TWITTER, is deceiving users with its blue check system, according to a preliminary ruling from the European Commission under the new Digital Services Act. The Commission found that the current subscription system – which allows any user to purchase a ‘verified’ status, previously only available for the official accounts of organisations and individuals – “negatively affects users’ ability to make free and informed decisions about the authenticity of the accounts and the content they interact with”.

“There is evidence of motivated malicious actors abusing the ‘verified account’ to deceive users,” the Commission said in a statement.

The Hunter laptop story that we all read about repeatedly on Twitter and that some of the most followed Twitter accounts including Donald Trump repeatedly tweeted about on Twitter? No, pretty sure that was on Twitter.

Elon Musk considers himself to be highly intelligent yet continually falls into the cognitive bias trap of agreeing with every single stupid conspiracy going, no matter how badly constructed, so long as it agrees with his priors.

Another example but 'X' was only about 3 hours ahead of Reoprting on #DSA about itself.

Or where our media doesn't even cover stuff NewTownMountKennedy/EU elections for example.

European Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton and Elon Musk had a public back and forth on X in the last 2 hours.

I linked the tweets for people on 'X'. Some people are averse to it and likewise gript. So here is that site's article. Tweets embed in it, so no need to do so here.

It will be interesting to see this playout in real time.

Also other bad news for the platform.

Was any Irish users complaining of that happening? The only way I have see it happen is with unviewable spam (i assume) on replies to my tweets.

Shadowbanning... and those lauding "free speech" under Musks control have no comment.

Of course they dont pay any attention to what actually happens and just repeat Musks lies

Do you think he's lying about being offered a deal? I don't think he is, he better have kept the receipts though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,572 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

Given his history of making **** up, yes I would say he's lying... Suspect this will be another case of him making an outlandish statement and the reality won't align at all. The EU don't seem particularly concerned by the supposed conspiracy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,027 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

Elon can afford to challenge them, that's why I believe they tried to cut a deal rather than challenge him in court where they end up being exposed. It's no secret some in the EU want to censor people they don't agree with or contradict the official narrative.

And Elon also has made up a load of ****.... He also specified multiple other companies have participated in such a deal.... It's sounding like a load of nonsense atm and should be viewed as such until he produces actual proof.

I'll keep an open mind, let's see how the ECJ view secret deals on Wednesday. Either the EU is open and transparent or its not. I hope it is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,392 ✭✭✭corkie

@drunkmonkey Do you think he's lying about being offered a deal?

Don't know if he is or not! But there has obviously been a breakdown in communications with the platform and the EU commission. Or a misunderstanding of what was discussed. I was under the impression up until today, that it was more of cooperative nature between them, rather than enforcement. Having a public discussion doesn't improve things between them?

We do know that this EU Parliment is on it's last days, and the commision maybe just flexing their muscles at the moment. Don't know who France are choosing as there commissioner. So Thierry Breton and Margrethe Vestager, may not be reappointed. https://www.politico.eu/article/marine-le-pen-thierry-breton-eu-commissioner-jordan-bardella-national-rally-emmanuel-macron-french-election/

Of all things to pick on the Blue Mark is well know that it doesn't represent what It once did pre musk.

    ^^ Check date of Tweet.

Well it is quite good to see the DSA process starting to kick in against X now, but it is slow….with all the time needed for fact gathering and appeals etc. I wonder how long it will take?

Hopefully it will get there in the end, and mean X just decides to terminate operations in the EU. I think there is as much chance of pigs flying or Satan going ice skaing in hell as of X changing to become compliant, if found not to be.

Nothing of value will be lost IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,941 ✭✭✭✭VinLieger

I'd be willing to be this "illegal secret deal" is elon completely misunderstanding the EU saying "hey don't let illegal **** be posted on your platform, basically obey our laws and of course you won't get fined"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,572 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

Yep the phrasing sounds like that alright. Also regardless, I'd suspect people will claim whatever he said is true.

On any alignment chart the EU is Lawful.

All though the Brexit negotiations the EU published it's negotiating position.

The UK were caught out by not understanding that it meant exactly what it said, they wouldn't be able to have their cake and eat it. The devil was in the detail but at no point could the UK complain about not being warned long in advance about any of it.

If the EU didn't do a special deal for the UK who were a member of the EU at the time, who would believe they'd do a special deal with Musk?

You cant suppress everything in this day and age but old Twitter was easier to put the Thumb on it as it were.
