Indeed the year without a Winter or a Summer!

The year of the everlasting late October.

GFS 18z continues to show an increasingly unsettled second half to July with potential for another cold spell to set up during the 3th week and barely a sniff of anything remotely warm. Will August save this poor and chilly summer, time will tell.

GFS predicts a large moderate storm next Wednesday (T156).

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. GFS 12z rolling out and it's basically curtains on summer for the rest of July. Nothing more needs to be said really.

This is getting not only annoying and disappointing but also people now are losing faith in summer , our only chance is August getting warm to hot but I'm not holding my breath anymore

Don't worry we'll get high pressure all winter 😁

I'd imagine you could predict the rest of the year being unsettled and mostly cool with an odd warm day and ya wouldn't be too wrong. Not too cold for snow though. No fear.

Extraordinary July, barely touching 20C sofar and regularly much lower! It must be heading towards one of the coldest Summers in a long time! Who would want to holiday in this type of Climate. Ireland you've nearly got it all, but your climate must be one of the worst in the world!

14C Christmas Eve and 14C mid July. All you can do is 😃

I dunno what the max temperature for July is so far but it can't be much higher than 20C and we will be lucky to see anything past 23C this month based on the current modeling. The current cool spell has now been extended yet again to July 21st and I wouldn't be surprised if it gets extended further over next few days. Anything remotely average to warm is constantly been pushed back day by day.

Some of the long range models are predicting the current north-westerly Atlantic dominance could persist all through August and into September, some even go as far as October. At least we know this pattern will change in time for winter and we will have long fetch south-westerlies along with high pressure spells!

The highest temperature so far is 20.0C in Gurteen and… Mace Head!

Edit: Actually, Athenry got to 20.1C today so that's the new high.

When you see this, consider 'high Summer' and it's goose cooked:

That jet stream is just going to keep on driving south across Biscay.

Actually lots of Spanish, french and Italians trying to escape the heat over there 😲

GFS 00z extends the cool weather all the way to July 26th now, 4 extra days of chilly weather since the 12z upgraded the cool spell yesterday to the 21st. Basically the GFS is struggling to get temperatures back to average right out to +384 hours and of course there are plenty of rainfall spikes from this weekend all the way to the end.

I was just looking at the GFS 6z as I really need some good weather in the next week or two while outdoors here in Ireland. Novice reading the 6z but is this a good sign here? Granted I’m sure it could disappear in another run and it’s for Wednesday week.

The 6z is a good run but massive truckloads of salt needed to believe in it. The 6z is also most likely to be a massive outlier and will be gone on the next run.

I echo that. The GFS always says high pressure towards the end of the run…. pretty much every single run it ever does. I'd only believe it really about a week out.

So chances are low but not impossible…!

Exactly. One of the silliest comments I've ever read on here.

Besides, no one comes to Ireland for the weather. They come for the scenery (which is arguably enhanced by the changeable weather), the food (made possible by our relentlessly mild winters), the music, the castles, the golf courses, and the pubs. Not the sun. Tourists are well aware of how poor our weather can be. In fact my experience is that they actually think it's even worse than it actually is.

Also, places like Iceland, Western Norway, Faroe Islands, and Scotland have weather that is even worse/cooler than ours and have no problem attracting tourists.

Yes - we've had a few weeks of poor weather even by Irish standards but I do feel like some people on here need to get a grip…

My wife works in a hotel in Cork and the American tourists are disappointed if the weather is wall to wall sunshine, they want the mist and the drizzle!!

Mod Note: Need to keep the thread on track to discussing FI Charts ( T120+ onwards ).

Wow, charts are woeful for another 10 days! Is it possible we see no pickup and go straight into Autumn. From a weather pov it doesn't get much worse than this!

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 17,428 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

It's entirely possible that we will have no summer this year with the exception of 4 or 5 days spread apart over the course of 3 months. , A continuation of Autumn which has gone pretty much uninterrupted since September 2023 looks likely. If August doesn't deliver then autumn will continue into Spring 2025 and possibly beyond.

In fairness the air is slightly warmer in the coming weeks. Maybe 14c to 16c a couple of days but it will be 20c in places many days like today. At least ya can wear a tshirt today n not freeze. It may rain every day but it will be warmer rain with warm dry spells in between.

what are we looking at there lads?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 17,428 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

We are looking at alot of uncertainty past midweek. Rest of July looks mostly unsettled and quite cool at times but there is alot of scatter in the modeling from as little as 4 days away so much warmer weather is possible. How wet or unsettled it becomes remains to be seen. Overall most of the ensemble members are in the cooler end of the range but there are quite a few warm runs as well.

    Untitled Image

While this graph looks fairly wet, alot of it is in the form of showers so the next week to 10 days may not be as wet as what we see on the graph. High pressure continues to look very flimsy and continues to get pushed back day by day so confidence of a warm and settled spell is very low at the moment.

Looks like continuing similar to the weather we are having recently. A mixed bag, temps getting up to the high teens and a bit over 20C a couple of days in a few locations but it would seem that it will be transient warmth to cooler conditions with rain going though at times, cloudy conditions with clear sunny spells also at times. Where one area could be 19 or 20c depending on fronts and cloud cover it could be considerably lower in other parts of the country, sunshine will make all the difference to temperature.

Must say that lately I have noticed the charts noticeably downgrading the rainfall closer to the day. Had been watching charts for this week coming and it looked very poor for a a couple of days midweek especially Weds but much lighter now.
