Volvo XC60 Vs. VW Tiguan

Looking for advice on deciding between a new XC60 or a new Tiguan. Not overly concerned with handling or performance, but we are mainly looking for reliability and safety. I would prefer a diesel, but as Volvo have got rid of that option from their line-up, we are considering the plug-in petrol hybrid option for the XC60 - what are people's experiences with this? Any issues/drawbacks, etc.? For the Tiguan, we are considering the regular diesel.

Would appreciate any advice/input. TIA.

There is a complete new XC60 due in 2025, which will likely impact the future resale value of a a 2024 one from next year on. That in combination with the fact that the current Tiguan is fairly fresh would sway me personally to a Tiguan at this point.

the new Tiguan is getting pretty strong reviews - also a plug in hybrid model coming which should do nearly 100km on battery

Theres probably a big difference in the price. We are considering the new Tiguan too for my wifes car but as a Polestar owner myself, I'd rate Volvo a good bit higher. They are better cars all round than VW's. Th new Hybrid Tiguan will be interesting as it will have plenty of EV range and attract a lot of people who are on the fence about going electric.

I had a 4 year old XC 40 diesel that I traded in this week for a new diesel Tiguan that I collected yesterday

Always assumed Id stick with Volvo but it got very dated inside after 4 years and I wanted a change

The difference between them after only 24 hours is very noticeable

Cabin in VW much quieter

Seems more solid than the Volvo

Navigation/Entertainment system street ahead

Automatic is great , never drove one before

Very happy with it but it was very expensive

had a automatic petrol 201 tiguan and was very smooth and comfortable to drive.. they seem to hold their value incredibly well to.. i was surprised really as the boot isnt massive in them (at least last gen) they probably arent as big as the xc60?

xc60 is getting long in the tooth now. If you looking at the new Tiguan then you should look at the new Skoda Kodiaq also, they are the same car underneath.

That'll be EX60. There won't be another XC60, although they'll keep selling it along with the XC90. XC60s do incredibly well residual wise.

A Tiguan is an unusual option when you're considering an XC60. The Diesel Tiguan is 140 ish RWD BHP, vs the entry 350bhp AWD Volvo. I also don't think they're comparable from a level of fit out either. I don't rate the Tiguan inside at all, honestly I don't think VW interiors aren't really that good (previous VW owner here) I've the T6 for 2 years now. 30k kilometres done and I'm at 1.6L/100 (176mpg in old money). But that's a reflection of my motoring which is country/city with most journeys just under 60kms. The Volvo has been flawless so far in terms of reliability. They don't have the greatest reputation here, but still better than VW (again, my own experience was horrible with VW reliability.)

If you want something classy get a Renault Austral or better yet the new Rafale which is both classy and a stunner.

This is something I forgot to mention, a decent sized boot is important for us. They are both around the same size. Neither are massive (compared for example with a Skoda Octavia) but have enough space for our needs

Cheers. I suppose performance isn't too much of a concern as it will be my wifes/the family car. We mainly want something reliable and safe. Also running costs are a consideration - are VWs generally cheaper to service (cheaper parts, etc.) than Volvos? I have an old S40 myself and I've never found it extortionate to service, but maybe others have a different experience, particularly with new Volvos

I've a 2023 Tiguain PHEV, not the latest model but I believe boot space is similar. Its the family car here too and does the job for lugging kids stuff around but loses a bit of capacity with the battery. Still plenty of room in it though and haven't yet come across an issue with stuff not fitting once you load it properly. I wouldn't necessarily consider them to be in the same class though, XC60 is a lot more expensive and competing with the X3, Q5 or GLC models. Tiguain is a rung below that IMO.
