hey, a little off topic but does anyone know of a site dedicated for VAT qualifying cars for sale in the UK?

Excellent, thanks for the reply. Will have to start looking up north again so.

Just looking some cars up north. A few with mainland UK reg’s. If you go to the DVLA website and input the reg, it’ll give tax, mot details and so on. But down the bottom it will also tell you the last date the V5 was issued. Now, it’s not 100% as I’m sure dealers don’t have to put the car into there name, but if you were looking at a private sale, it might help.

Third time lucky. Anyone have any experience of buying a VAT qualifying car? I'm talking about a private individual here in Ireland going to England and approaching a dealer with a VAT qualifying car and asking them to reduce the price of the car by 20% and then mark it as an export?

Any experience on warranties - are kia / hyundai x year warranties valid when importing from NI?

Literally asked this question of Kia Ireland today, this is the reply I got back:

"Unfortunately Northern Ireland/UK warranty is not transferable.

If you have bought a car from the UK/NI you would have to refer back to them for any warranty related issue as their warranty may slightly differ from the ROI."

I bought a Kia in Northern Ireland and a warning light came on days after I bought it. I contacted the garage I bought it from and they arranged for me to go to my nearest Kia dealer. They told me in the Kia garage I am fully covered with the Kia warranty and to bring the car to them if there are any more issues.

Was that before Brexit or recently out of interest?

Hyundai confirmed a NI warranty is valid here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6 Jenanne

It was within the last month. I bought a 2021 and have the remainder of the warranty

You should look at the T&Cs in your warranty book for the car. Look for wording similar to this (from Hyundai UKs published Warranty T&Cs as of May 2024).

    Making a claim
….If a defect in manufacture should arise, any Authorised Hyundai Retailer or Repairer in the UK or in Europe can put it right even if you did not buy the vehicle from that Retailer.

Maybe technically they are correct, your warranty is with Hyundai UK (HUK) and is not transferable to Hyundai Europe, so any claims need to be directed back through to HUK.

But its kind of irrelevant if any 'Authorised Hyundai Retailer or Repairer' in Europe can potentially sort you as they will handle the claim on your behalf.

When dealers do warranty work, they charge the cost back to head office (so to speak). So an if Irish Hyundai dealer can readily perform warranty work and charge the costs back to HUK then they will probably be fairly obliging, especially if it means getting repeat business from you. Same goes for recalls.

Could someone clarify my understanding re importing from NI? Looking at importing an EV, probably a post-Brexit (2021-ish) car, and comfortable with the VRT requirements. However, I'm still struggling with the UK reg. vs NI reg. thing. If the car is NI reg. then I believe it will be VAT/customs exempt. If the car is UK reg., but has been registered (in private ownership) to an address in NI for at least 3+ months, would this (potentially) qualify for import without paying VAT/Customs? Most people I have spoken to (NI dealers & VRT helpline) have said that VAT /customs WOULD be payable, but some of the recent posts on this thread have made me doubt that is correct. As most of the make/model I am looking for are UK reg., I would appreciate any advice, particularly if anyone has successfully imported a UK reg. from NI without paying VAT/customs.

    NI reg

    = No customs

UK reg in NI private ownership for 3+ months

    = No customs

A UK reg car sitting in a NI garage for 3+ months isn’t private ownership, so therefore customs will apply

Thanks. When you say UK reg in NI private ownership for 3+ months, do you mean No customs OR VAT payable? Just to clarify.

So if you knew someone living up north you could in theory go to mainland uk and make a purchase under their name and get ferry back to NI, and then transfer to your name 3 months later and then you avoid both vat and customs?

Same plan I said in this thread a few months ago. Problem is not everyone knows someone up north.

yip - or at least know someone well enough to agree to such an arrangement. Plenty of obstacles to doing it too I’m sure, insuring the car for the 3 months etc.

Still, for what I’m looking for even after a short search I could easily save about 8k or 20%+ and the choice in Ireland and up north is pretty dismal at the moment.

I don’t think you can allot it to the licence plate alone; it is where the car is registered not what plate sits on it. An NI plated car could have been moved to GB. That car, if imported into Ireland, would attract VAT and customs in addition to VRT.

What is not subject to VAT or Customs is a car which has been in use in NI (part of the EU customs area) for a reasonable period of time (which is asserted to mean 3 months).

There is a Japanese thread on here. I could be wrong as this is coming from memory but I think someone posted something recently on there with a link.

Could you potentially just rent a room up north for 3 months, use that address for "import" from GB to NI and insurance etc, then 3 months later register it here with neither you or the car having never set foot in NI?

Smart thing to do if they want more EVs in the republic is give grants on imports equivalent to the VAT and Customs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,328 ✭✭✭✭User1998

You’d only need to rent the room for a week until the logbook arrives and then wait 3 months or so to VRT the car😂

I was thinking the same but do you think registering it on your own name would throw up red flags with revenue and customs. While registering with a friend would not.

Say you go to register the car with the v5. But the owner on it is you with an address up north and now you are registering down south to another address. But you are not claiming the residency exemption. I don't know maybe over thinking it 😂😅

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,328 ✭✭✭✭User1998

It would need to be in someone’s else’s name for sure. But you can put any name on a logbook

If a NI vehicle in the previous 3 months was registered to a business, but previous to that was registered to NI private individuals, would that qualify as no VAT/customs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,894 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

The reason I say 3 months is because then you have a record of living in the north for 3 months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,328 ✭✭✭✭User1998

No, it doesn’t work like that. You don’t need proof of living in the North. Are you mixing it up with transfer of residency? The car just needs to be registered to a private person in the North for 3+ months

there’s every reason to believe that it would - it establishes that it is a vehicle in NI not GB.
