Yes, spoke with them on Monday.
It may well have just been a stock answer too, lol.

I think they probably just meant ''service would be restricted'' as in, we will stay as a lower tier customer under the €2,500 per year limit.

I asked what restriction/disruption meant & got this reply:

"If you have previously verified ID and this is out of date the limit will be reset back to €2,500 if ID is not provided by the 31st of July."

    No mention of anything else.

    Hi,

Swirl card have asked me to submit a payslip as part of the verification process, is this normal practise? I'm not too keen to be sending them my payslip, why do they need this information. I have already sent them photo ID and proof of address as part of the verification process but they have said my account will be locked until I send my payslip.

It is up to each financial institution to verify their relationship with you in whatever way they see fit and of course they are not required to do business with you. Asking for a payslip would suggest they are seeking to confirm a source of funding for the account, but that is just a guess.

Looks like they have dropped the unverified limit to 1800 & reduced the remaining top up limit which now has a minus sign on it. Just checked & the minus means I can't top up. I didn't receive any notification of this change.

Just an FYI, that they no longer give you the PIN number for new cards
You have to verify first, so the new cards are only useful for limited online purchases now.

Also, I'm not sure if it's mastercard or the sites themselves but after only 2 or 3 purchases on some stores, the card gets blocked. 🤔

In the light of all this, what is the purpose of Swirl vs Revolut ? Is it cheaper or something or whats the justification of having it ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,893 ✭✭✭✭AndrewJRenko

It's a way for businesses to give smallish amounts of money to staff or research participants or similar.

Unfortunately, there is getting to be very little justification for having it now.
However, the main benefits over Revolut were the anonymity and the fact that you could top up the card with cash. 😘

Does anyone know any ways of getting swirl card converted to cash - tried the usual revolut, paypal, western union but no success yet.

Do you mean as a verified or unverified user?
There is no direct way of doing it, under either circumstance. Even as a verified user, you still have to transfer the funds to your bank account ………………. and then withdraw the cash.

The only perhaps questionable workaround, might be if you have a good friend who would buy the card from you or if you let them purchase something with the card and they give you the cash in lieu.

    New update for unverified users.

They will soon be reducing the annual top up limit from €1800, all the way down to €150.
    Booooo!!!!!!

Am I right in saying it's impossible to buy anything on the internet now anonymously unless one looks at crypto?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 800 ✭✭✭maik3n

I was registering a brand new card, unverified, in the app and during said process, it threw up a message with something like
Be being sure to verify your id/card as new unverified users will soon get only a €150 annual limit.

I was able to skip it though and finish the process and I still have the €1800 allowance available.

Just for reference, this keeps popping up in the app when I log in.

Does that mean maximum per top up or maximum balance?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 800 ✭✭✭maik3n

I'm fairly certain that it means a €150 annual limit/balance for any new card, so it will be a considerable reduction from €1,200.

    For un-verified users of course.

The old change affected all cards not just new but this would effectively stop Swirl.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,072 ✭✭✭✭Discodog

Just to confirm. CS are saying that new cards will get 150 limit. Existing cards will no longer be able to top up at all unless verified. So Swirl is effectively dead as there's no point in verifying when there are much cheaper alternatives out there.

I still have the €1200 limit on my current unverified card, so they must be holding off implementing this plan for a while yet.
What other alternatives are you thinking of?

    N2/Skrill/Revolut all require verification now.
Paysafe is quite limited in where you can use it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,072 ✭✭✭✭Discodog

    Are there any alternatives ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 800 ✭✭✭maik3n

It's not looking good I'm afraid.

I did happen upon Bunq cards, but I can't find any details on ID/verification matters and there doesn't seem to be any options to top up offline like you can with Swirl/Payzone.

We might just have to bite the bullet and get verified with Swirl or use many, many, many new €150 limit cards.
