It is a thread for discussing the Biden presidency. Policy actions Biden takes in his presidency, including therefore his interactions with Congress, progress of bills etc are entirely relevant.

Therefore all the points stand re: Biden trying to do something responsible about the border, and Republicans in Congress blocking it after they got their orders from Trump.

Therefore, it is either utterly disingenuous to criticise Biden over it and not Republicans OR it is demonstration of a total ignorance of how a Presidency works in the US.

Yeah - I don't think Warren is really a serious option today, I was commenting more on how she was passed over 4 and 8 years ago due to the influence of party donors. Too much of a threat to how big business operates.

It looks like the party has confirmed they won't be looking to replace Biden. They may just have handed the election to Trump.

She was "passed over" because she got nowhere near enough delegates in the primaries. I don't know why people feel the need to look for nefarious reasons when the answer is just "they weren't that popular".

On the topic of "presidency by committee", or anything like that, is it any surprise there's been renewed historical interest in Woodrow Wilson recently? The Edith! podcast starring Rosamund Pike, for example, which kind-of glossed over some things, but there are still some who think that the USA has already had a female President!

One of the less charitable interpretations is that she was there mainly to leech support from Sanders. Either way, Biden ended up on the ticket.

Harris would be hit over her record as AG, and the allegations over her sleeping her way up the ladder. They'd probably also go over her selective use of her ethnic background. From memory, she didn't have much of a record as Senator.

He's complicit in the murders of thousands of children. He supplied the murderers with the weapons. But you already know that.

Republicans were for it, it included things they had been calling for... until Trump told his stooges to oppose it. Hypocrites all.

It has non partisan support from people on the front line:

The union that represents front-line Border Patrol agents supports the Senate immigration reform bill, saying the new authorities it gives agents to turn migrants away are a key step in the right direction.

The bill in microcosm proves that Trump and Republicans dont care about the border except to play politics with. With occasional racist rants.

Biden and the Democrats are the ones trying to govern responsibly.

2 takeout sandwiches came to almost $40 yesterday, just sandwiches, no drinks or sides.

LOL that sounds like a You problem, Pub Subs aren't $20 I can assure you of that, they're still comfortably under $10. How many add-ons are you putting on these gourmet sandwiches of yours? Which ripoff delivery app did you use? Your $20 takeout sandwich hardly sounds like the "basic" stuff you are ranting about here. Hard to take you seriously, really taking the piss here.

Why is one metric Registered voters and one metric Democratic voters?

Picking **** up on twitter has made people think less critically huh.

Democrats could actually win this election if they chose someone left field, young, and a complete break from the washington elite.

If ever the US needed a fresh start its now.

They can also win it by continuing with Joe Biden.

Despite the internet having a fever dream with noise to signal off the charts this weekend, and MAGA fantasizing about the Dems replacing Biden since the 2020 election, key reporting indicates that it's still very much not on the table.

    @Overheal

They can also win it by continuing with Joe Biden.

While I would agree that even a senile Biden is better than Trump and what MAGA would like to do, I'm not sure enough Americans agree.

There are less than ten states which actually matter in the election and it appears that Biden trails in all of them, and this is before the next round of polls after the debate will be done.

This isn't to be mention a massively underreported fact that the RNC co chair talked about the party hiring legions of partisan poll workers for the big day.

This isn't to say that polls are everything, but they're certainly not nothing, and the cliché being thrown around that polls are meaningless just comes across as reckless thinking.

If the tide is to turn against Trump, what's the timeline, if that timeline isn't to stay the course with a belief that the polls will be wrong?

The polls have been wrong for years now. MAGA broke polling. Social media broke polling. Multiple election cycles MAGAs who shouted "Red Wave November" citing "polls" have been left eating lemons. The result is still yet to be determined. I can say with reasonable certainty what won't work, and that's parachuting in someone new, raises far too much hay (eg. why not Kamala Harris? a X+Kamala ticket? etc it will shatter the democratic coalition no matter what you do - which is precisely what MAGA etc. want to see, they want another 2016 like split between the hillary and bernie camps) there's a reason why MAGAs have been wishcasting for that outcome for - 4, 5 years now?

Lol I don't use delivery apps, I go get stuff myself because I'm not a lazy bastard and they are a rip off. It was capriottis, we don't have Publix here, but I wouldn't call that gourmet. A cheese steak and a "bobbie" if you must know. No extras but I did give a tip.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,683 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

Ah so you were exaggerating, and including a tip in your claim that your sandwich order at a "fast casual restaurant" which you claimed was a "basic" commodity, was $40 for 2.

Thank you for clarifying you were not being completely honest.

fast casual restaurant, found primarily in the United States and Canada, does not offer full table service, but advertises higher quality food than fast food restaurants, with fewer frozen or processed ingredients. It is an intermediate concept between fast food and casual dining.

Wouldn't call that "gourmet" you say, yet, they offer a … Wagyu steak sub roll?

😂 (I am LMFAO rn, what can I say)

    image.png

Or ooh, we have "The Bobbie" (wait you say you ordered) a thanksgiving dinner on a bread roll - at 2300+ calories you could feed a family of 4 off one of them!

I think I found your problem (and it's not Joe Biden)

Sure, the polls could be wrong and have been , but that cuts both ways and also includes the possibility that the numbers are actually worse for Biden, not better. This is how it went in the 2020 election where Biden had some big leads that didn't actually materialise while results in other states were within a couple of points of the polls.

Whatever shortcomings that polling might have, you can be sure that political operatives aren't using divination to determine where to concentrate campaigning. They're using empirical methods to gauge the intentions of likely voters, ie polling.

Overall, the message of, "we have no other ideas than to sit tight and hope the polls are wrong" would be a pretty pathetic note to watch American democracy potentially die on.

The primaries already came and went, and people knew Biden has been old for years now. I don't think his debate performance really changed as much as people think: there is no close 2nd choice in the wings anywhere or anything, if you want to entertain the parachute approach. This is just noise. Neither Newsom, Obama, Bernie, Hillary, Tom Hanks, The Rock, nobody is going to parachute in for one thing, and, Harris isn't going to step in, because for starters, Biden isn't stepping down or ending his campaign - in spite of much hooplah made about entertaining doing so this weekend, he surely didn't miss it, I think he has ruled it out (that's what the reporting indicates).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,270 ✭✭✭✭briany

In a sense, you're right about the debate not changing much because Biden trailed in the polls going into it and he will almost certainly trail in the polls on the other side of it.

What are he and his team going to do in order to right that situation?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,683 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

I don't have any special insight.

    image.png

I know what you know, his family are the ones who encouraged him to run in 2019, they're the ones encouraging him to stay in now - and shake things up by getting rid of the advisers who advised the debate strategy. Campaigns (winning campaigns) have a long history of surviving such shakeups.

If Biden drops out, his replacement will talk about solving the cost-of-living crisis, and the people here denying it exists will support that and argue that a Democrat can solve it better than Trump.
