He is still listed for Sunday breakfast time but anytime I've listened, I haven't heard him on.

Hasn't been on since early 2020 - sadly missed.

That's almost 2 years ago, you'd think they'd update the schedule on their website !

John got Covid in January and was off his feet for a long time. He is still technically an employee of Nova so perhaps that is why he is still listed on the schedule.

He did an interview on Phoenix FM back in June

I am sorry to hear that John was unwell and hope that he is now at full strength and back on the radio soon. In my personal and humble opinion, John Clarke is Irelands best radio DJ. His days at the original Radio Nova were a masterclass in how to use a studio to full effect, while also knowing exactly how to communicate with an audience. He is always a joy to listen to.

We need those expert skills back on the radio :)

John produces his own podcast shows, "man cave FM"

It looks like they have formally gotten rid of him after two years of limbo as he's no longer listed on the website.

Yep, the curiously named "Muc ar Maiden" with Traic Ó Braonáin is listed in its place.

John Clarke is now doing syndicated radio shows on :

wwwcharityradio.ie on Friday afternoon and Sunday lunchtime

Radio Nova international smooth hits ( run by ex Nova / Q102 Laurence John)

Real FM Spain 107.9FM or online.

    Still spinning the discs

It's interesting to see his involvement with Charity Radio and Real FM (which has a lot of Irish presenters). Most of those involved were not with any of the big pirates or the big licensed stations. He is widening his radio network!

I would not be at all surprised if he turns up on Christmas FM this year.

I’m sorry but I don’t get this John Clarke thing, what’s the love in with John Clarke? He was average on the radio, must be an anorak thing I’m sorry but I don’t get it at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,096 ✭✭✭Red Fred

John Clarke always gave the impression that he was in favour of free choice for presenters to choose their own music so I couldn't imagine him wanting to be part of the strict Christmas FM playlisted format.

Christmas FM do have a very large selection of music in their library and some presenters have thrown in some of their own over the years. I suspect that a slot after midnight might have a bit more free rein.

I would have to strongly disagree with you on this Keith. John Clarke was never 'average on the radio'.

In my humble opinion he is the best Irish Radio DJ ever ... in terms of radio presentation technique and delivery. He stood head and shoulders above everyone else on Irish radio, for decades. The combination of his radio presentation understanding, his musical knowledge and an ability to effortlessly communicate with and relate to, his audience, resulted in him being at the top of his game since his earliest days on the local Dublin AM pirates... before Chris Cary noticed that he was not just a club disco jock sitting in a radio studio. John knew the difference that had to be made for daytime radio presentation.

There used to be a clip on YouTube, recorded by Miles Johnston in the early 1980's, where he interviewed John while live on air at Radio Nova. It is a joy to watch how he conducts the interview while also being on air for the market leading station. His focus on using every available aspect of the studio equipment at his disposal (cart jingles fired off at will, cueing up records and timing intro's, firing off adbreaks, delivering scripted v/o liners) is a master class on how to do it right.

While those professional attributes might be considered as anorak appeal aspects, it was the basis for his popularity with listeners. Listeners often don't notice when things on air are done right, until they hear it being done wrong.

^^^I've seen that clip you mention above, and agree, its absolute magic to watch.

It was also John Clarke who spotted the potential of having Declan Meehan and Bob Gallico doing the breakfast show together.

Chris Carey listened to the suggestion and hey presto you have probably the best breakfast show in the history of Irish Radio - the Brekkie Trekkie

Personally I think Nova missed a trick in dropping John Clarke, alas such is radio these days

I think he would probably fit in again better now they seemed to have found their feet of late after a few disasters years with the association with Colm Hayes.

@Ger Roe would you have a link to that clip of Miles and John by any chance? I had a search but can't find it anywhere.

    Thanks

It used to be one of several videos, under the Irish Era title, but those videos seem to no longer exist on You Tube

Unfortunately so.... the Irish Era videos seem to be gone off YouTube - along with the Big D film 'Wavelength'. I tried looking for them when I made the post.

same logos as nova in Dublin, how are they getting away with that?

Nova 100 stole it and the name from the original pirate so it would be a bit rich for them to contest it. I’d also guess that it’s based out of Belfast for that reason.

I find it funny that the names of the three main stations under the Kevin Branigan umbrella are all “borrowed” from other stations.

indeed, not a shred of originality. Probably hoping that the reputations of the three originals might rub off on his later day rip offs. Sadly, all three are poor imitations….

Nova, Sunshine and are you counting "classic hits' also ? that was not a former Dublin station, although 98FM used it for a period when they launched in 1989.

Other side of that coin is that Nova 100 and Sunshine 106.8 are two of the most successful radio brands in Dublin.
