A couple of months behind schedule, but not bad going, nonetheless. Will be a game changer for the town.

Is it fair to say its only a partial bypass of the town as such? I'd not call the John B Keane Road a bypass, more like an inner relief road so Tralee to Tarbert traffic for example whilst avoiding the old Feale bridge and Square still have to navigate part of the town via the JBK road to get beyond Listowel.

Looks that way yes. The new build road goes from the Tralee road to the Ballybunion road and meets the existing road there. I don’t think residents were too happy about the likely increase in traffic volumes.

    It's not really a bypass.

    More of a relief road.

Thanks for posting that. Good update in that report and a nice shot of the new bridge.

Was supposed to open in Feb. Any new date announced?

This was an update given to local councillors in January. I imagine May might be ambitious based on latest drone shots?

So we're almost halfway through June and I haven't heard rumblings of an opening date. Is June no longer a possibility I wonder?

Not long to go I reckon going by this update from John Kelliher.

By the looks of that you could get 2+2 in the same width.

    I don't think so. That's a Type 1 Single, and is 12.3 m wide including shoulders (2.5 + 3.65 ; 3.65 + 2.5).

    A Type 2 ("2+2") is 16.5 m including hard strips and median (0.5 + 3.5 + 3.5 ; 1.5 ; 3.5 +3.5 +0.5) , so it would need another 4.2 m, and there isn't that much space between pavement and barrier. While there's probably enough space in the land-take for a future extension, the bridge isn't wide enough.

However, this road won't need widening for decades. There are two traffic counters on N69: north of Tralee on the way to Listowel is under 7,000 AADT, and north of Listowel, it's only 4,000 AADT. I'd be surprised if traffic on the bypass itself was over 6,000 AADT, which is less than half the capacity of a Type 1 Single.

This road may make it more attractive for Limerick city to Tralee traffic to use the coast road instead of Adare, NCW, Abbeyfeale.

Was down by Listowel over the weekend and it looks very close to opening. All road marking and signage appears to be done, and I couldn't really see anything major outstanding.

I'd be very surprised if it's not opened within a fortnight.

All three towns are to be bypassed and the current N21 is a better road than the N69. Plus it's a Western bypass so Limerick to Tralee traffic would still need to go through the town.

I thought it went as far as Tralee Road (as did road-high). Whatever about Adare bypass being delivered in three years time, I think the other two will be some years later.

Technically John B Keane Road is also a bypass though I agree it goes through the town. A throughpass.

Apologies, I'm rarely in Listowel. What's the story with the rail line, is that greenway now? And does it just revert to one of those tarred footpath-for-cycling-that-stops-for-every-side-road things when it gets to the Ballybunion road? Seems a shame if so. I know this scheme started a while back but that's some low quality stuff: you wouldn't leave a child on it.

Can't fault Wills Bros here mind you, in fairness looks like great stuff out of them again.

Anyone taken a spin yet? First impressions?

And what is traffic in town like now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 951 ✭✭✭lordleitrim

I actually drove it today on my way from Tralee to Limerick instead of my usual route via N21. It's quite impressive in it's newness but feels very short and of course it feeds into the fairly congested John B Keane road and 2 sets of traffic lights which unfortunately negated any free flow effect I enjoyed from it. Not sure I get to Limerick or Dublin quicker from Kerry this way unless Adare is particularly congested but the scenic coastal drive by Glin and Foynes made me feel I'd like to use this route more often going forward...particularly when the Foynes to Adare dual carriageway opens in 2027.

particularly when the Foynes to Adare dual carriageway opens in 2027.

Only Adare to Croagh is opening in 2027. The rest still hasn't been tendered and will open at a later, still unspecified, date.

You can see it's designed in such a way that a full bypass of the town can be added in future.

Jerry Behan, the owner of the Horseshoe bar and restaurant in Listowel, said his business has grown since the bypass was opened.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Mr Behan said Listowel is a thriving town and the bypass "will do the town the power of good".

"There were traffic jams in town and people didn't want to go in because they were stuck in traffic for so long," he said.

"When they'd come into the town, all they'd want to do is get out of the town and get out of the traffic, whereas now it is much easier to get into town and people are inclined to stop and shop."

    Fantastic to see.
