    1.6 petrol or diesel?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,032 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

Diesel I'd imagine I think the smallest petrol was 1.8, I could be wrong. They're a very comfortable car.

Ugly as sin. €1,500 for a 07 Roomster. 1.4. Test to next year. One of the worst put together ads I’ve seen in a longtime too.

Very specific on the engine capacity too.... down to about 30 digits after the decimal point, just in case you were in any doubt. 🙂

I remember hearing of a man who went to trade in his three year old 607 back in the day. There was an eruption of anger in the showroom when he found out how much they told him it had deprecated by. Rocket powered depreciation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 413 ✭✭manatoo

I wish cars still depreciated like that. I bought a 6 year old Saab 9-5 in 2012 for 6 grand. The way things have gone since I'll never own anything under 13 years again 😭

Happened to a neighbour of my father's too, a 607 as well, he drove it until old age put him off the road. I don't know where it ended up but he minded it like a baby.

I had one briefly and wasn't overly fond of it to drive (it was fine, just a bit boring and detached), but that is a lovely looking car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,631 ✭✭✭littlevillage

Thats a smashing bargain at €1750, if everything checks out.

Looks very clean and 180k Km's is very low for a Merc E-class. What's the catch?

For comparison I'll be selling a 2006 Toyota Corolla saloon with 150k Km's on it shortly and I'll be looking for €1500....and to say its not a patch on that Merc... is putting it mildly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,882 ✭✭✭User1998

True, but the running costs, maintenance and reliability will be much better on the Toyota. A gearbox or engine fault could easily make the Mercedes an economical write off. High tax and high repair bills are usually why cars like this are so cheap.

    Road tax maybe?

That's like saying a bike is a good option until it's not. The leaf does what it does. Why would you expect it to do anything else? I wouldn't expect my cat to empty the dishwasher.

Not sure I'd be going near a 6 owner Merc tbh (and that's not including however many it had in UK).

Actually have that car myself just slightly more km and not auto. Was going to put it up on done deal last week (had pictures taken and all!) but couldn't do it, it's not that handy as our second car as it's got no Isofix so no use transporting the kids but it's been very well looked after (by me and previous owner) and is nice to drive so thought I'd keep it for another while.

The point is that unless it's purely a local runabout the severely limited range EV works but then, why would someone buy such restricted vehicle when a cheap petrol car can do much, 700-800 kms vs 80 kms or less and fill up in 3 mins vs 7 ish hrs, maybe 4 if the Leaf has the 6.6 Kw charger or 30-50 mins at a fast charger if it's not in use then if it is could be 1-2 hrs wait before you get to charge.

I'm sure someone will buy it that wants to try electric cars for the first time and has access to a 2nd car.

I have a Leaf for the runaround that is used 95% of the time. It does this job flawlessly and is saving me a fortune in fuel and running costs

Bought a cheap ICE for the longer trips over summer and at weekends 4 months ago. Last week the clutch randomly lost hydraulic pressure and now the car is indefinitely off the road until I can find a mechanic who has the time to allow me to give them over a thousand euros for a new clutch.

Ended up renting a car to bring on holiday because the Leaf won't work for this case. The cost of renting a nearly new fully serviced large family car is less than the cost to just tax our cheap ICE for 3 months even if we never drove a single km in it, never mind insurance, the cost to buy it, or the 1k plus it'll cost to put it back on the road with a new clutch.....

God, this ‘well a cheap EV can’t do everything an ICE car can’ argument needs to get in the bin. It’s tiresome at this stage.

@LIGHTNING @L1011 can we make it a forum rule that anyone making this boring argument gets a 24 hour ban? This shhh has derailed this thread a few times now.

We could also argue for people who moan about other posts to be banned because it's boring and tiring and not even a productive comment or counter argument just "I don't like what I read, please shut it down" Typical of boards.ie moaners though !

Akrasia can make his argument but I can't ? his opinion is reflected by some over and over on this forum but the pro EV nerds can't take it because they want everyone to think EV are great and everyone should drive them and anything to the contrary should be shut down because they don't want to read it ?

Should the motors section be full of the pro ev drivel that's prevalent in the EV section " we dare not say anything negative about electric cars or else ?

    Nonsense, grow up !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,396 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

Yeah, as I said the low range EV is good as a 2nd car but I don't see the issue replacing a clutch if the car is in otherwise good condition ?

Must be a big engine old CC car to worry about 3 months motor tax ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,220 ✭✭✭✭Akrasia

I will get the clutch changed but I didn't have time as it went at the last minute. It turns out that renting a car for the few days is way cheaper than maintaining a 2nd car for infrequent long road trips.

Inconvenient but not as inconvenient as keeping the 2nd car taxed, serviced NCTd, insured and repaired when bits break

The fuel savings from running the BEV more than offset the cost of renting a 2nd car if you have home charging and you don't need a 2nd car for other reasons

yeah sounds like an option, Rent, inconvenient for me, I just want a car that is not inconvenient, I did the EV thing for nearly 10 years but wouldn't if I hadn't had access to an ICE car, this is what I'm talking about, the missus has Outlander Diesel, I drove the EV, we took the Diesel on the longer trips because I got sick of the hassle and so did she. In fact, it was a waste having a long range EV because the extra range wasn't really of much use because even though the 77 Kwh ID3 has 350 odd kms "real" range it's not good enough and charges sh*t slow and wasn't worth a cent come trade in, I couldn't trade it in in the end so went back to the finance company under the half rule who sent it to auction.

My advice to anyone considering EV is to think carefully before paying much more for longer range EV if you have access to ICE at home because I found it wasn't worth any more at trade in.

I wouldn't have EV and ICE car and then swap between the 2 that's mad, I'd just keep the car that can do everything I need, saving money on fuel is nothing if you are only doing mostly short trips it's not a huge deal.

The outlander needed slave cylinder and threw a clutch in while the gearbox was out, + full service and Dif oil change and it cost 1600 Euro, the car is a 2015, 110 Miles, U.K import, and it will go for another 110 Miles easily, she did have to replace the ECU costing 2K a couple of years back, this can happen any car I suppose but still a lot cheaper than buying a new or couple of year old car.

Mostly short trips can add up to a lot of KMs if you have a young family who need to be ferried around constantly.

Taxis do mostly short trips too

Short trips also do the most damage to ICE cars through wear and tear (cycling cold-hot-cold and running the car at the wrong engine temperature for more of the time) and finally shorter trips are the most fuel inefficient journeys for ICE cars that can burn much more fuel on short stop start urban journeys compared with a BEV where this is their most efficient operating environment)

What looks like a nice clean well looked after car

Last owner has it over 9 years. I wouldn't be a fan of the tinted windows or LED bulb conversion but still a good clean looking car for decent money. Listed at 2495, but surely it could be bought for close to 2k. Only issue is the radio/entertainment system seems to have packed in
