I don't think everything is fantastic, but for the majority of people things are pretty much fine. And the alternative is poor standard. Hence the results.

You're probably in a bit of a bubble too as most people I work with don't want SF, or any of the loony right in charge!

Well they fix the bugs, but doing so usually creates more bugs.

I've an inkling that we may be seeing rural areas returning to more "traditional" voting patterns. I think the farming community have the impression that urban focused parties are not on their side. This is understandable as more demands for change are put on agriculture.

Lots of people I know don't want SF in power.

They don't feel they can trust them.

THe 100% Redress Party done well in Donegal.

There is a huge number of house owners who are fed up with the inaction in the defective concrete blocks scheme, and they have voted in big numbers.

I can see one of these candidates running in the General Election too.

    Head in the sand stuff

Even farmers themselves know that current models of production aren't sustainable nor profitable

The approval ratings of FG were soaring pre election so its no surprise that they have done well, they'd prepped for this following the nomination of Harris and the changes implemented in immigration policies in the recent weeks. People are seeing action on the ground and have reflected that at the polls. The votes stripped from SF have transferred to indies and going into a GE might be a game changer and be enough to dismantle the FF/FG power sharing pact that has been in place since 2020.

I'm not saying that it will or that you would want the alternative but remember when FF and PDs were short of overall majority all it took was a nod from MHR to reject FG from a place at the table. IThere's still a lot to play for.

I had to come back and add, of all the politicians currently in residence in the Dail the one who has had the greatest impact on my life has been Helen McEntee. I haven't voted for FG but the implementation of legislation on stalking was very significant in my personal experience and couldn't have been timed better. Ironically, it has been in use almost exclusively for politicians who have been experiencing harrassment and abuse on the campaign trails since its intoduction.

Not really a political comment. I saw Micheál Martin give a very short interview and I had little interest but I was massively impressed with the building he was in!

An incorrect google search by me found Cork County hall which imo seems to be a quite ugly multi-story building. Try again.

I found Cork City Hall and I just say the interior is stunning. Being quite unfamiliar with Cork I was very impressed with this building. It seems they sometimes hold classical music concerts there and I definitely would consider making a trip

    One unhappy camper...

Independent councillor Frank Roche looks unlikely to retain his seat in Fermoy, with 628 votes at the end of the first count.

"I never turned off my phone for five years, day or night," he said.

"Anyone who came to me, I did everything I could for them and I'm absolutely disgusted to think that they didn't show me a bit of respect today".

Haha shades of John O'Donoghue there 😆 Poor Frank

"I hope that the irony will not be lost upon you that I stand here, on my evening of defeat, in a hall – this magnificent sports complex – which I helped to build"."

I'd have a lot more sympathy for someone like that than I would have for the likes of O'Donogue purely because councillors don't earn much money (it pays like a part-time job).

Some poor chap in Cork city got 25 votes. That'll take some beating as the lowest vote count in the country. He literally must have no family over here (he's got a foreign name) to end with a total like that. Even the guy who promised that he'd send all the firefighters to Lanzarote, rename the GAA and force RTE to pay everyone 5 grand managed to get 86 votes.

I saw someone earlier remark that it was the nicest count centre in the country (probably not too much competition there since most of the rest of them seem to be glorified PE Halls)

Kerr in Castlebar in with a shout as well, unfortunately. I'm sure his "Irish Inquiry" side hustle will go down well in council chambers.

Ted Bradley (Green Party) has been eliminated after the third count for Kanturk County Cork

Jobs for the boys all round so far, same old same old although at least one woman has claimed a seat so I can sleep soundly tonight.

They are …. and it is good to see the far right lunatics are gaining v little ground …. all the wannabe Trumps, Hitlers and Commander Freds can return to their den …. these loud minority try to stoke fear with their anti-migrant, anti-gay, anti-EU, anti-mask, anti-vaccine, anti-turbine, anti everything agenda …. they were at it in 2019 and 2020 too in the elections and during Covid and ever since …. people are just sick of them at this stage and see through them ….

When looking at some of them they are what you'd expect ….. individuals with a criminal background who look like cannon fodder for the main protagonists of Love/Hate and Kin …. but others should be utterly ashamed of themselves to be involved ….. architects, teachers, lecturers, etc ….. are these professions paying extremely poorly these days or something??!! …. you'd think they'd know better ….

Like a person said on the news earlier they would not vote for these as he called them Nazi parties …. he said then they are well organised and are funded …. which I 100% agree with …. these movements are saying the same in every country and many countries have fallen to them and it is going on since around 1979 ….. but gaining more ground in recent times ….

Countries that have succumbed to the far right either via elections, coups or hijacking revolutions are ….

Iran 1979 (far right militia hijacking of a popular revolution), 2021 (rigged election), poss 2024 ..

USA 2017 (hardline takeover of the Republican party), poss 2024 ..

Afghanistan 1996, 2022 (far right rebel group styling themselves Al Qaeda (1996) and Taliban (both) take over in coups) …

Hungary 2010- (gradual opportunistic slide to the far right over time) ..

Russia ?? (sometime during Covid 19 … details not really clear) ..

Israel 2022 (election followed by a coalition that included hardline far right warmongers) …

Countries possibly or likely to be governed by far right in the future ….

Netherlands, France, UK, Germany, most of Europe ….

Former far right regimes include ….

    Hitler's Germany, Mussolini's Italy, Stalin's USSR, Khmer Rouge Cambodia, Ceausescu's Romania, Milosevic's Serbia, Karadzic's Bosnia, ISIS …..

Regimes labelled far right that are not really it

    Georgia Meloni's Italy, Jair Bolsonaro's Brazil ….

I think there is a sinister movement behind all of this …. it is a network of individuals who are afraid of progressive forces and who are allied in their desire to have their countries as nationalist-religious-militaristic entities that control their people ….

Thankfully the Irish electorate are wise to the devious forces at play …..

I ended up with his number one time and he knew well there was no vote in it for him but he made some calls and helped me out, fair is fair he did me a good turn and I'd say he helped out many others.

"Very soon we are going to Mars. You wouldn't have been going to Mars if my opponent won, that I can tell you. You wouldn't even be thinking about it."

The media will need a new bogeyman with the far right not making any ground.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,972 ✭✭✭Chris_Heilong

I think there are a few far left countries in your list there, Far left autoritariaism is alos a big problem as the majority of dictatorships around the world are all sold on a socilist ideal. Right does not always equal bad as left does not always equal good, those old ideas really need to die a death and people need to use logic, not feelings on decisions they make.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,103 ✭✭✭lumphammer2

What is popularly called 'far right' also can be called 'far left' …. a whole thing is one goes too far left they become far right and vice versa ….. a BETTER term may well be extreme political obsession that manifests itself as violence …. The Khmer Rouge for instance not much different to ISIS …. in both some crackpot peasant got an idea into their head what the 'ideal' society was and some more educated opportunist promoted it and directed it ….

From very direct knowledge, the stalking legislation has been used in dozens of cases already.

However most cases are held in-camera and the person accused is not mentioned as it can identify the victim.

Similarly the legislation on publishing private photos has been widely used and some of these cases have been in the media.

Amother candidate in the running for lowest vote count could be Patrick Feeney in Galway City Central. He is currently on 8 votes.
This is a massive percentage increase from the previous time he ran, when he secured 1 vote.
At least he believed enough in himself to throw himself a vote.

Diarmuid MacConville in Sligo/Strandhill is currently on 34 votes after 2 counts. 32 first preferences.

He also ran in the Manorhamilton LEA and received a total of 37 votes.

That's a fairly solid rejection when he couldn't muster even 100 combined votes in two areas🤣
