Garage conversion - ceiling height

    I want to convert my garage and have a door going for kitchen but don’t want a step down into it or raise the roof …it means the ceiling height will be less than 2.4m ….will will this be an issue….also do you need planning permission to change the from to a large glass window? Thanks

    How much less than 2.4?

    Can you do a vaulted ceiling instead?

    You may not need planning, unless the new window may impact your neighbours.

    30 cm drop to garage floor is a lot. Are you sure this is correct?

    Im assuming the garage is attached to the house. Is there a connecting door or are you planning one?

    sorry I calculated incorrectly….the ceiling height would be 2.35m (7 feet 7 inches) if the floor was level with the kitchen…does it have to be 2.4m…the room is only going to be a home office. Thanks

    2.4m is recommended but not set in stone. For a home office the new height would be fine imo.

    You won't really notice it.

    Just have to use down lights and not pendants, and keep in mind that tall bookcases and wardrobes might not fit.

    For the ceiling height, if it's less than 2.4m, it might feel a bit low, but it's not necessarily a problem. Check your local building codes, as they might have specific height requirements.

    Regarding the large glass window, yes, you’ll likely need planning permission if it changes the external appearance. Check with your local planning authority to be sure. Also, consider insulation and heating, as garages can be cold. Good luck!

    It's not ideal. But it's not impossible.

    2.35m is close enough given there are latent conditions.
