There’s no thread that can’t dragged off miles into pointlessness these days

EDIT: Might as well remove this before I get warned, because that's how things work around here.

Mod: Please refrain from the back-seat modding and subtle digs at other posters / the mods.

Back on topic please. Ulster have a game 2moro.

Guys, I went to Methodist College from 1960 and there were 'fees' that all day pupils paid. It wasn't much…about £20 per term but multiply that by 2.200 pupils and in those days that was a lot. It didn't matter if you were 'qualified' or not. We also paid an additional sum in one or two years to support our 'brother' Methodist school in Dublin….Wesley College.

Private education in N.I. was basically made illegal by Sinn Fein when they had the Education Ministry. Good Marxists that they are. People from outside Ireland / UK can pay for what are really high academic schools but not natives. I don't really have an opinion on that matter these days. I probably did have at one time. At 75 I couldn't give a rat's hoop. If you've got the dosh, do what you like.

Am I right in saying that Ulster could still lose out in qualification for CC if in unlikely scenario they get nothing from match vs Munster and either Lions or Ospreys who will finish in 8th were to win the URC and then it would only be Top 6 who qualify for CC so eliminating Ulster in 7th place from CC?

Tight enough game this at 65 minutes. Munster had a few things not picked up by the ref but overall seems pretty fair

Pretty happy with that performance given the disruption before and injuries in the first twenty minutes. Having to change from a 5-3 bench to 6-2 was a fairly big twist as well. But Munster's bench just had too many heavy hitters on it.

Best Frank Murphy performance I think I've seen - only two ridiculous decisions were the Snyman penalty for the tucked arms shoulder to Addison's head, and Zebo being allowed to lie on top of Stewart Moore, digging him in the bake.

Thought the two best backrows on the pitch were McCann and Izzy.

Izzy and McCann have impressed me a lot whenever I've looked at Ulster since Richie took over. I can see the former being an international one day.

In fairness, McCann has been doing it all season - he was the one bright spark in the first half of the season as McFarland was dragging us down. He's not playing any better now than then.

    Applauds of Izzy, McCann aside.

Postlehwaite didn't look out of his depth. More Worryingly we might actually miss Addison next season.

We will. With Hume out, Addison away and Marshall retired, we're paper thin there. Is it Moore at 13? Don't think we've any other choice. Moxham is apparently a centre.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,067 ✭✭✭✭bilston

Wilhelm De Klerk might get a shot sooner than expected. Kok has played centre but seems to definitely be more a wing. Posthlewaite seems to be a 12 and not a 13. It's definitely a problem, but I have faith that Richie will find a solution.

Loved the pass he threw to Stockdale in the first half. If he gets a consistent run and stays injury free then he can break into the team regularly, but obviously that would mean he either plays 13 or Stu is unavailable for whatever reason.

Is Moxham not out with a long term injury? He started as a centre before being moved out around u20 level I think, but I would worry about his hands and general game awareness at 13.

Postlethwaite will probably see a lot of game time I expect but he looks a little slow and defence isn't ideal yet.

Moore is the most natural 13 out of them but seems a shame to move him back after he's found his feet at 15.

    Don't have much choice.

    Actually - it'll be Kok, won't it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,040 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

Does Zac Ward okay 15s? What position if he does?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 64 ✭✭Deramore

de Klerk was good for the Ireland 20s today. McNabney was probably the best player on the pitch but some of the other Ulster forwards were outmuscled

I thought McCann was the best of the back rows against both Leinster and Munster. Hope he gets on the summer tour

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,400 ✭✭✭Locke_Lamora

Thought the same regarding the u20 match, some of them looked worryingly underpowered and skittish. McNabney looked very strong albeit against slightly younger opposition, but it's good he can put in that kind of performance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,040 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

Thought McNabney, the 12 and Rory Telfer were the pick of the development squad today.

He was hard to put down, just kept pumping the legs. Deceptively quick for someone his size.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,400 ✭✭✭Locke_Lamora

The 12 was a sub for Ireland u29’s against France.

Not sold on Telfer tbh, always seems to step inside.

I'd be very interested to see how Baloucoune would go at 13. He's a very canny defender, a good tackler, has an outside break, has pretty good vision in terms of finding support with a pass, and is reasonably big. He needs a bit of a change up to get back in Ireland consideration too. It could be a bit like how Bowe started playing some 13 while in Wales. Next season could be the right time to try it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,067 ✭✭✭✭bilston

I'm not convinced we'll see Baloucoune in contention anytime soon.

Where is he at the minute? Injured I assume.

I live in California where private schools are $50k+ and Catholic schools $25k+. Many people in Ireland have a massively inflated idea of the fees associated with private schools there. All the teachers salaries are covered by the state so the fees are largely gravy to provide extra classes, facilities and sports. Essentially the tax payer is subsidizing the Leinster player pathway by allowing private schools to use fees to pay coaches instead of teachers. School fees range from about 5k to 8k for day pupils afaik, that's a little more than 1/4 of the cost of leasing a Range Rover.

he was sitting in front of me at the Ireland 20s vs ulster a game yesterday.

Thanks for explaining those numbers in a way us common folk can understand. I would have gone for something more arcane like 'food budget for a year for a family of 6'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,200 ✭✭✭ersatz

At the lower end it's equivalent to annual livery for a horse, definitely for people who don't worry about their food bills but cheap relative to a lot of the tat they spend money on.

Does anyone know if Stuart McCloskey's injury is serious enough to keep him out of the QF?
