Should FTTH provide the full speed promised?

    Hi,

I've just had a 500Mbps FTTH connection installed but my speedchecker is showing 441Mbps (laptop connected directly to router) instead of closer to 500. Is that normal or is there an issue?

    Yeah it normal.

You are getting very close to that 500Mbps, so close that it would probably not be noticable to you as a user.

There will always be some loss.

Oddly enough I have VF 500Mbps and sometimes get 540Mbps or so on WiFi when beside the router.

Great - thanks. I had a very pushy Vodafone rep selling fibre here recently who told that only Vodafone and Eir could guarantee the full 500Mbps and any other provider would provide 'up to'. I went with another provider but was wondering when I saw the numbers that I was getting.

If you look at the Vodafone website (or Eir) the speeds are advertised as 'up to': I don't think any provider (FTTH or not) will guarantee the full speed

Normally "up to" part is only is applicable to FTTC because it can be anything from 5 to 100 MB/s based on distance.

With FTTH you usually get close to the number they advertise. They will still say "up to" to cover their back just in case.

Eir say you should get upto 90%
