Just needs a bit of brown on the front wing and it’ll look like a Loop the Loop. 😜

Ah it looks ok tbf, just nowhere near as good as the Marlboro livery he drove in.

I thought we were getting a Marlboro style livery as their Monaco merch is red, white and black

Yeah same here, the clothing would have you thinking the car was going to be along the same lines.

While Pat Symonds joining Andretti is the big story this side of the Atlantic ,stateside the big story is liberty media CEO Greg Maffai allegedly threatening Mario Andretti that 'he (Greg) would do everything to stop Andretti ever getting into F1 '.

So far liberty media have declined to comment.

With congressional hearings into liberty and the exclusion of Andretti gathering pace there could be trouble ahead for liberty media.

Congressional hearings? Wtf, has Congress not got any real work to be doing?

Liberty are a US company and thus subject to US laws related to anti competitive practices, which congress plays a role in.

On Tuesday (May 21) a bipartisan group of senators including the chair of the judiciary subcommittee on antitrust ,Sent Amy Klobuchar, sent a letter to the justice department antitrust division and the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) requesting an investigation into whether liberty has violated U.S. antitrust laws.

Separately the Judiciary Committee Chair has launched an independent inquiry.

Any truth to the allegation that Greg Maffei personally threatened Mario Andretti will be damaging to Liberty ,an antitrust investigation could be a disaster.

Andretti have made it clear that they did not approach the law makers.

This is big news and has been ignored so far by the European press.

Autosport are reporting that Sainz is in talks with Williams…that would be a shame.

Do we know why Liberty is so opposed to Andretti? It seems like it must be personal rather than sporting or business related. They're fine with an investment company like Dorilton taking over Williams or Lance Stroll taking over Force India (Lance Stroll is actually involved in F1 since the 90s according to Joe Saward).

But they're totally opposed to an actual racing team with all the knowledge and experience you could ever hope for in a new F1 team.

    Why?

Generally, it seems to be about money. If there is another team on the grid, the money for each team will be less for each team to take home, depending where they finish on the grid. This is IF Andretti were to enter as a totally new team, not sure if they will or even want to take over an existing team. The Concord Agreement is also up for review soon, and if that gets signed then it pretty much closes off any path for Andretti to enter.

There could be additional reasons given, but my understanding is it is all about the money. In F1, it usually is.

Surely there can't be any truth in that, it would be a complete waste of a good driver. I've seen that RedBull offered Checo a year extension but he turned it down as he wants a 2 year extension. Seeing as his contract is up this year and RedBull don't want him for 2026 you'd imagine RedBull cut Checo loose at the end of the season and would be all over Sainz

Fair one. I don't get how it works. I thought the pot would be split 11 ways with a $200m parachute payment to soften the blow. So I'm surprised it's not the teams objecting too.

I didn't think it would come from Liberty's share.

    This too shall pass.

Fair. And I wouldn't trust Lance to run his own affairs, let alone a whole team.

sainz caused hassle when he was there previously hence why he left mid season. About trying to push to be promoted over max.

The value of F1 has risen a lot since that 200m entry fee was introduced, I remember talk that it could be bumped up to 600m or something like that when the new Concorde agreement is signed? For sure resistance to Andretti joining is coming from some teams also, Williams and James Vowles were pretty vocal about it at one stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,569 ✭✭✭recyclebin

This story seems to be gathering pace today but why would Sainz go to Williams? Newey going there too is the only plausible explanation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,285 ✭✭✭shanec1928

theres no real options for him.

    redbull - out

merc - holding out for Antonelli super licence

aston - no space unless lance calls it a day.

    McLaren - full lineup

Sauber \ Audi - 1 space, which he doest seem interested in or the project is a shitshow.

RB - couldnt see that happening since he left cause he didnt get promoted to red bull

that then leave haas or williams or the dole. hes picking the best of the worst since he has no choice.

Could take a year in a Williams to stay in the market for a better seat in 2026 but it's risky.

People tend to rate drivers' performance on their results which is mostly dependent on the car. A year pootling around at the back will rely on everyone remembering that he had a good season in 2024 after a couple of very patchy seasons in the 2 years before.

Ideally he would strike now while the iron is hot. His stock will never be higher than it is right now. A year at Williams is a huge risk, but it might be his best option.

Eh you forgot one Alpine. Yes they are not great at the moment but that could easily change next year or even in 2026. They got a few things wrong with the car this year and it ended up a bit heavier than all the others but that will be fixed next year.

It's better than Williams or Haas.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,045 ✭✭✭✭flazio

What tangible asset do Alpine have to fix their problems that Williams and Haas don't? Heritage and history doesn't cut it.

    This too shall pass.

they get a few things wrong every single year, didnt think there was any point in wasting typing out anything from them since they offer so little other than two places on the grid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,215 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

One of two things will happen with Alpine.

They'll either turn things around in the next year or so or Renault will say, fcuk this and pull the plug.

    Only my opinion of course

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,499 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

2 things I see with Alpine.

1: A new engine reg for 2026. Maybe they'll actually do good. And if they do, it's a works project with a good history.

2: If they do crap, there's a chance they get sold to Andretti if their application continues to be rejected. So could have a foot in the door there - maybe they'll be good instead?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,635 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

The Engine is a works project with an incredibly poor recent history.

They had the poorest engine of the new regulations, then Honda entered behind them and overtook them and left them for dust.

The engines have all closed up over time so its not a big issue anymore, but they categorically do not have a good recent history.

They're a low budget team doing about right for a low budget team. They set their budget in advance of the anticipated cost cap. By the time the cost cap was actually introduced it was way higher than originally planned (didn't include drivers and top people). So they carried on with their spending plan and were left as a low-mid budget team.

I think (and this is very subtle) that HP may be sponsoring Ferrari.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,669 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

So it sounds like Ferrari are no longer going after Newey, and also that Perez will likely resign for 2025 with Red Bull.

I saw the Perez news in twitter, but didn't hear about Newey. Where's that being reported?
