Ryan and Keenan starting is huge. If they get through unscathed both are straight into next weekends 23.

Great to have Connors back as well.

I don't disagree (I don't really want to see him at 10 for Ireland any time soon), but I would still say he is ahead of Harry Byrne for Ireland.

Big chance for Cormac Foley here.

Not a bad team, bench is a little wet behind the ears. A losing BP would be a good enough outcome, but a win isn't out of the question.

Russell, TOB and Keenan is the fastest back three we've fielded all season. If the game becomes unstructured at all then we can do a lot of damage.

We've a decent pack out there that probably matches Ulster's al well. Just think we might have one eye on the final whereas Ulster will be fighting for Champions Cup qualification. Can see a home win.

I think the door is ajar for Foley for bigger games this season if he shows up well enough here.

I'd be shocked if Luke is dropped for the knock outs/ final… but I think it's a closer decision now than it was a few weeks ago

Bit disappointed not to see Ringrose. Pretty close to guarantees he won't be available for the final.

Pretty much as strong as possible given we're a European Cup Final next weekend.

Sensational to see Ryan and Keenan back. Lots of pace in our backline too all of a sudden with all of JOB, TOB, Russell and Keenan fit again.

Really big game for Cormac Foley - would be great if he made a leap here. Probably the biggest start of Brian Deeny's career too to this point.

Almost every player you'd expect to be in the squad for the final will have played in the last two fixtures bar McCarthy and Lowe. Hopefully there's nothing the matter with those two.

In the two fixtures before last season's final we didn't give as many players a runout before the Aviva. It's a change in strategy and one that I hope works out for us.

Excellent to see Ryan and Keenan back and starting too.

Yeah, would have thought we would have seen them here, even if on the bench.

I would have liked a slightly stronger team (thought maybe some starters on the bench) but all in all it is enough to sneak a win.

For me, Jack Conan has really been the form 8 for Leinster (albeit off the bench the last few games) with some brilliant contributions and has performed better than Baird has at 6 (recently). The issue for Conan is whether Leo is happy to play Doris at 6 so that Conan can start.

Leinster's pack looks strong and should provide enough quality ball for Foley & Harry Byrne to impress. It's a fantastic opportunity for both of them.

This should be a great match. I'm worried about the rustiness of Keenan/Ryan. It's fairly similar to a proving point match for both lads. A good backrow, too! It will be a tight affair.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

Wow! Deeny only has 16 caps! Seemed to me like he's had more. That's a small #.

Even with Foley starting, Luke will be in the xx111 next week. But it's good to see Foley get a look in a match this vital.

Based off the available players for the Ulster game and the injury report. I'm willing to take a go at naming the Leinster team for the final (barring any injuries against Ulster):

    1 Andrew Porter

    2 Dan Sheehan

    3 Tadhg Furlong

    4 Jason Jenkins

    5 Joe McCarthy

    6 Ryan Baird

    7 Will Connors

    8 Caelan Doris ©

    9 Jamison Gibson-Park

    10 Ross Byrne

    11 James Lowe

    12 Jamie Osborne

    13 Robbie Henshaw

    14 Jimmy O'Brien

    15 Hugo Keenan

    Subs:

    16 Ronan Kelleher

    17 Cian Healy

    18 Michael Ala'alatoa

    19 James Ryan

    20 Jack Conan

    21 Luke McGrath

    22 Ciaran Frawley

    23 Josh Van Der Flier

I can see Leinster wanting to super charge their bench and bring a huge amount of experience and quality off the bench. Bringing Cian Healy, Ronan Kelleher, Michael Ala'alatoa, James Ryan, Jack Conan and Josh Van Der Flier off the bench should somewhat nullify Toulouse's backs attacking a tired forward line and should also give them an advantage in the scrum. Yes it does leave the backs very thin in terms of injury but Frawley can cover 10,12,13 and 15 and Jimmy O'Brien can cover the wings and fullback as well as centre, Osborne and Henshaw can cover both centre spots and the wing and Lowe can cover across the back line if needed. Unless their is an injury, I can see JGP playing as close to 80 minutes as he possibly can.

    My guess for Toulouse

    4. James Ryan CAPTAIN
    5. McCarthy
    6. Baird
    7. vdF
    8. Doris

    Replacements
    19. Jenkins
    20. Conan
    21. Luke McGrath
    22. Harry B
    23. JOB

I agree with the strategy but I think the option of having Ryan and McCarthy starting is too tempting to turn down. Jenkins can make impact off the bench but Ryan and McCarthy just offer so much that not starting one of them is a mistake IMO.

Ryan has to start, unless they want Baird calling LO

Hard to disagree with this as I think Leinster will go for a 6-2 bench split.

My only thought on your team is that Josh starts over Connors with Connors off the bench.

If its a 5-3 split, Josh starts at 7 and Larmour comes in somewhere.

Also possible that Larmour is already locked in to start at 14 given his form and Jimmy is pushing for a bench spot.

I would tend to agree with you but Jenkins seems to have really come into his own in a starting berth and I'm just a bit hesitant to drop him to his bench incase he isn't as effective but your rationale is sound.

I would start Connors over Josh to ground down Toulouse like he did against La Rochelle and then put fresh legs into the mix in the 2nd half and have the same work rate for 80 minutes, the only difference is that JVDF would be finishing out the game and would offer much needed leadership and experience of big games coming towards the end of the match. It's the same reason I want James Ryan and Jack Conan off the bench.

Ye. It happens too often in Irish rugby. At times we judge our half backs harshly on an individual basis without looking at the situation around them.

RB v LAR and RB v Ospreys are very different players.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,033 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

Toulouse have rested everyone who might play a part in the final. There are zero players in this line up for faced Harlequins in the semi final.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

I reckon it will depend on Ryan's fitness. If he's not at the level required tomorrow, he likely benches?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,800 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

Frawley has played two games at 10 this season, both of which were outside JGP. His last start with Luke was in September 2022 and we scored 40 points.

Is this some weird thing about the school that McGrath went to or something?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,731 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

I would start Connors with VDF from the bench for impacy, but Connors starting this weekend suggests he won't start next week. They both only cover one position so I think they'll be a straight swap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,253 ✭✭✭Hey_Ho_Lets_Go_3

No it's very much about the quality of McGrath's pass

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,800 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

    right

Just you said that Frawley was suffering from playing at 10 with McGrath when that’s completely untrue, so I was just wondering why you made up something so specific.

today is make or break for the season IMO, have to win, losing is not an option

It looks like Mun/Warriors/ Leinster will top the table. So the S.A teams will have to travel north, if it's the case. Stormers likely will finish 4th/5th and Bulls 4th. Bearing in mind that they play derbies to wrap up the season.
